I still can't figure out why people obsess over the ratings of games.
On a side note for GW: I can go back and play anytime... cause it's free. YAY FREE!

I believe it's Remyburke or someone else who's sig says "Ignore all negative comments, and take any positive ones with a grain of salt. Try it for yourself." Guild Wars is a solid game. No I'm not a fanboy. It's not for everyone, but look at it this way. There's no monthly fee, so should you want to go back at any time, you can.
I know GW didnt entertained me because its the lesser one between all those great ones out there
BTW is GW free???
oh well it didnt entertained me

I was puzzled too when I bought it, theres just something about it so really bad, it doesn't feel right. I think I had too high expectations of it or something.
I recommend taking a week or 2 off and go play another free game...like D2, or maybe Anarchy Online or something else that's free. Then, go play Guild Wars again with a clear mind and no expectations. I think you'll find it'll be fun then.
I myself was unimpressed with the open beta, but find the completed game with all the updates, and a good guild to be quite fun. The key to this game is a GOOD GUILD!!!!!! If you're looking for a guild, PM me, and I'll direct you to my guild's website, and help you with the application process. That goes for anyone interested btw.
I played GW for about 2 months and it didn't get any better, it just sucked major arse the entire time. I don't know how Guild Wars could possibly be classed as a MMORPG since the only time when you so see more than a few ppl is only in the non-instanced areas. All Instanced areas u can only have a limited number of ppl there. It get more and more diffifult to find a really good game sometimes due to the fan boys postings and the financial kickbacks websites receive from game companies.
Eve-Online, EQ2, DnL, SWG (Dead), Guild Wars, Anarchy Online, EQ, DAoC, Planet Side, WoW, LOTR, Tabula Rasa.
There is no best MMORPG, only favorites.
No monthly cost = higher ratings.
IMO the only reason this is a factor is because it had been advertised like an MMO but written in big letters "NO MONTHLY FEE", then they came right out and said, nah its not an MMORPG, it's kind of like an MMO in the RPG aspect of things(like Diablo is), but hey lets call it a CORPG. I look at it like a FPS sorta game, only takes 2 weeks to hit cap, then it's all PvP matches pretty much, endgame is kinda like BF2 but with traditional RPG combat instead of twitchiness. You shouldn't go into GW expecting an MMO-like game, of course you'll be dissapointed.

If you want to play a GOOD MMORPG you probably should really think about paying a monthly fee for one of the good ones. GuildWars isn't really an MMORPG so if that's what you were expecting that's probably why you didn't like it. Guildwars is more of a hmm... CRPG on steroids.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Still in: A couple Betas
Whether or not you like GW depends largely on what kind of gamer you are. Let me explain.
I haven't ponied up the money for GW yet. I played the world wide beta event last year and I'm currently nearing the end of my 10hr free trial. I managed to pass the news about the 10 hr. trial to a friend who then passed it on to all of his buddies on the UO freeshards he plays. So far, everyone that's played with us is planning on buying it. Of course, these people are basing their opinion on the game that they played for 10 hours with people they knew and not on pre-release hype, screen shots, or user ratings.
Another thing to consider is the kind of gamers that we are. Most of the people that me and Grevan played with were also big on CCGs like Magic: The gathering and Star Chamber. Alot of us also liked Counter-Strike and fighting games like Soul Calibur. Since most of these people also came from UO freeshards, they preferred a small server and community. GW provides just about everything we were looking for. A "metagame" that allows for strategy before entering a quest or a PvP instance, A "paper, scissors, rock" relationship between the game elments (skills, classes, equipment). Fast action with some fairly deep combat, if you take the time explore the possiblities. And smaller, less confusing battles where death comes from diliberate actions of opponents rather than stray bullets, arrows, laser beams, etc.
There are alot of other things that I like about GW that wasn't really apparent until I had played for a couple of hours. The mobs in the game behave more like bots in an FPS. They have the same abilities and limits as the players and they attack intelligently. This became apparent after our party was almost wiped out by a group of Grawls that were roughly the same level as us. They had a spell caster that hung back while it debuffed out party and healed the tank grawls. The tanks ganged up on our monks and we just barely figured out what was happening before it was too late. We had been expecting the mobs to react in the same manner that they do in EQ or AO. It was a pleasant suprise
I can't really tell the "hardcore" FFA, permadeath, full loot crowd why I preferr games where I only play for a win or loss anymore than they can explain to me why they think it's fun to grind for monthes only to lose all that work to a random, flaming ballista bolt that strayed from a nearby battle. If you're not into purely competive, team-based games, then you aren't going to like GW. If, on the other hand, you like games like Counter-Strike, Soul Calibur, Magic: the gathering, Diablo, Phantasy Star Online, or Advanced Wars DS, then you'll love GW.
Guild Wars is technically a CORPG (Co-op RPG). I think of it as a blending of an MMO, FPS (at least the guild based fighting), and Diablo all together. Remember, these guys MADE D2 before guild wars, so they wanted a touch of the familiar. If you look at it even just as a cross between an MMO and Diablo2, without expecting it to be the game of the millenium, you'll love it. Otherwise, you'll probably hate it.
I think it's the objective of your past self to make you cringe.
Theres an old saying "what ever floats your boat." You might come on here and see guild wars at 8.4 rating, or go to gamespot.com and see its rating at 9.0. Its all great, but its really just an opinion. You will always have someone who love a game and those who will just hate it. Really name a game that you know that everyone there is happy with it. Its impossible.
I actually should say good job for trying a game, even tho you didnt like it. Obivous guild wars isnt for you, but maybe some other game might. Good luck on that game as well and hope you have fun.
Have played: CoH, DDO EQ2, FFXI, L2, HZ, SoR, and WW2 online
Thanks for the heads up. Remyburke and anarchyart both so frequently post in the same threads as myself, so it can be hard to remember who's sig is what.
I agree with your assessment, except that you're forgetting the online multiplayer aspect which is what makes the game so fun. The biggest problem is finding a good guild, as a large chunk of the population in fact is kids. Not just any kids, but b.net kiddies. The kind of kids you wish were your own so you could beat the bejesus out and teach them how to act. However, if you do find a mature guild, you'll find that you can have a lot of fun, and do a lot more than you can otherwise.
This thread reminds me of the day i bought WoW and made an account..i think that i hated myself more for paying than that time i paid for EQ.
Guild Wars is easily the best free monthly RPG around. That said its not for everyone since the content will last you 1-4 weeks to hit max then its all PVP from there.
Be prepared for a b.net mentality with the players. People will join groups and leave midway or just be complete n00bs. There are so many zones/players no one cares about their reputation.
Example: Guy joins your group captures the skill he wants then leaves. So untill you find a "decent" guild its can be pretty much a PuG nightmare.
yeah, if you're going to play guild wars, you'll need to bring your own party. That's not a bad thing if you have a yahoo friends list a mile long though.
Blah blah blah.
