So would it take the same time to be a level 50 Thief as it would to make a level 30 Thief/level 20 Ninja and would you be capable of fighting the same thing the level 50 character could?

this i can help on when you have a job in ff xi you lvl that kob up and olny that job onces you get to lvl 18 you get a sppout job . every job must be lvled by itself so say you lvl  30 thife then you want a different job you must use that job and lvl it up

i hop i made it clear if not i am sorry

Hmm, well this makes me think then that it would be silly to take a second job before you max level your main job as you will only be weakening yourself overall.  Of course once you max your first job, it would only make sense to take a second job to continue developing yourself and adding a second set of skills.

well the reason that you can have two jobs is to get the skills in both if your main job is a 30 thife your second job would be half of that  so you could be 30 thife and 15 war or what ever

If you have two jobs your experience is NOT divided. Let's say you level your Thief up to level 40, and your Samuri up to 30. You decide that your main job will be a Thief and your secondary will be a Samuri. Your secondary job is a maximum of 1/2 your main job level (in this case, theif). This means you will be a level Thief @ level 40/Samuri @ level 20 (even though your samuri is level 30).

Does this mean you lost Samuri levels?! Nope. Let's say you hit level 42 as a thief/samuri. You're now a 42 Thief and a 21 Samuri. You don't even have to worry about leveling your Samuri until you hit level 60. Hope this helps =). It's a really cool system I think, that's why you won't need to buy an extra character for $1, you can be everything in one (except for race, which is possibly the only reason to considered an extra slot).
