I doesn't understand mugengaia, he breaks of the best companies in South Korea, while he hype small Korean games which have no future globally.
What? mugen: no worries. I read all the Korean players discussion, complaints, polls, etc. too. I'm not sure where this other guy is coming from believing that agencies would provide a better reflection of the players' desires than the players, themselves, could provide, and that the games you mentioned are small games.
IMO most of the current games out there are being made without thought towards global distribution. Usually, initial 'global' distribution means expanding the service to China, Japan, and Taiwan only. Only very very recently have I seen the companies try to market out their failed MMO's to countries outside of Korea/China/Japan/Taiwan: like RFOnline. It failed. It's been long done with in Korea. So now they are taking the failed game global in the hopes of salvaging it. (P.S. for those psyched about RF: the graphics are really not as good as you think they are. I'd rate it somewhere slightly above DAoC's graphics. But, I did enjoy the RvR part of it when I played it.) MU Online. It may be doing ok outside of Korea, but it's barely mentioned these days in Korea. WoW is indeed still very popular. There are issues with the PC방s, and besides, Lineage 2's Chronicle 4 is on their test server right now. GuildWars was hugely popular for a short time for its release in Korea, but then it seemed to have slipped off the radar abruptly. (I honestly wasn't paying any attention to the game, so I can't tell you why that happened.)
I think there's a bit of a downtime or lull in the MMO industry in Korea right now. I think companies have been trying too hard. There is an incredibly number of MMO games now (many still in "open" beta...) and only a handful of them are actually being avidly played.

Totally agree with you!
NC Soft and Webzen did take the right steps to open an US subsidairy and to develop locally.
NC Soft did make a mistake in South Korea, because users needed to purchase the game title, and that market is nearly dead in South Korea......its the online way to do business in South Korea.
That's why they only sold 28.000 copies from GuildWars last quarter in South Korea.
Webzen (South Korea) has some promising games in its pipeline such as Huxley and APB, but as you might know, these games are developed by Webzen US H-Studio and David Jones, creator of the Grand Theft Auto series.
SUN might have some success in the US&EU due to its stunning grafics and music composed by award winning Howard Shore.
Gameplay and chock effect also scores high from information I get from beta testers in South Korea.
Gamers taste in the US&EU aren't the same as these from Asain countries.
WOW was a major title and does cost 5 to 10 times the cost from a major game in South Korea, and even alot more then games from China.
WOW is a high quality game........you don't find many games which can succeed globally as WOW did.
China is only capable to dump cheap developed games in the future for the US&EU market.
In the internet cafe places, do you have to pay for an account(monthly) also with the cafe fee? Or do they have their own accounts and you can get on(couldn't someone just hack your character easily if this was so)?
Did that berserker guy say...you can hardly see people who hate NCsoft in korea?
That Berserker must be nuts...because people are furious over NCsoft in korea.
One, they are currently being accused of starting all that ebayish crap with L1. They are being blamed for monopolizing MMO industry by allowing virtual-to-real trading in korea.
Another thing, korean people more than 50% hate NCsoft right now because they're service has provoked alot of players. Including me.
I think I've mentioned that I'm a pretty Big name in the Game Community in korea and here. Go check out my news thread on gamemeca.com by the same name. You don't usually end up with that many replies in a thread unless you have a reputation and something to prove to the community.
I think I've taken enough of disrespect from that Berserker guy. Anyone who is a old-time SC player knows my name as MuGenGaia KPGL (Korea Pro Gamer League) player, a pro-GGXX#r player in the US, and a well known name amongt gamers in korea as well as the fighting game community here in the US.
Anyways...I appreciate your reply Harlequina.
and to the other guy. In most PC cafes you don't need to pay for monthly fees. PC rooms have contracts with certain MMO companies. It's very hard to find a PC cafe with most titles. You mostly see PC cafes with major title contracts, such as WoW and Lineage2. Usually PC cafes with rare amount of MMOs offered will take in about $1.20 to $1.50, most will take in $1.00. On the other hand...I've noticed that if you get out of seoul and go to smaller cities, some PCrooms have all kinds of games without contracts. These Pc rooms usually take in about $0.50cents an hour, but you'd end up playing a free MMO, unless you have a monthly subscription. People in these .50cents PC rooms usually seem to play Special-Force, SC, KartRider, or Freestyle. Since most people do play these games more than MMOs (due to women, and casual gamers), thse non-contract PCrooms actually make a decent amount of money...because casual gamers prefer to play in these places cause it's cheaper...
GRIND sucks? You wanna be max level in a month? Since when did society award easy-goers and lazy-fools? MAKES ME PHOBIC OF STUPIDITY!
Dekaron's playstyle looks simply awesome (except for maybe a bit too much blood), it's pretty unfortunate that it's not doing that well over in Korea... less chances of getting it here eventually
It looks pretty interesting for game, and if I'm not wrong, it just got into open beta. Any talk about that game or any hopes of getting it over here? Thanks!
Well...Shayla seems to go open beta soon. One thing interesting that they did was, they didn't wipe out character datas after the free-open beta. Very unsual in korea. I don't personally know what their motive was in doing this.
I can't say must...but as far as hype is concerned...it's definitely not hyped as much as SUN, or Granado Espada.
Even ch4 for L2 is more talked about today than Shayla, so it's really just a wait and see matter.
If it's a Dark-Horse...kind of like Rohan Online...than it may be successful.
But open betas usually don't mean much since in korea there are OB masses? <---- this is what people who only play f2p and OB are referred to as.
None the less, you never know what Rohan Online can turn out to be after Open and actual service...Same goes for how Shayla turns out in open beta.
The thing is. IF upcoming SUN, Granado Espada, and maybe even RO2 don't live up to what they were hyped about...people will stick to the Dark-Horse games...such as Rohan Online.
On the otherhand, since Shayla just went into Open Beta, we'll have to see how it does in OB.
NeoSteam is going OB approximately the same time so...it'll be interesting to see the competition between those two...

Free Open Beta is like a closed beta with set hours. Only they don't have limited testers. Everyone is allowed to try.
They run Free Open Betas before the actual Open Beta in korea for almost all MMOs.
During Open Beta you don't have limited hours. Only server maintenance and downs.
One thing funny about the Shayla Free Open Beta that's going on right now, is that they aren't going to erase character datas. Usually when MMOs run Free Open Betas, it's like a Closed Beta for everyone, and the character datas are wiped out, but not for Shayla...
It must be some sort of strategy to get people to start from Free Open Beta eagerly...since korean people including myself are very sompetitive and it's usually a race for highest lvl from the very first day of OB.
