I know this has to have been talked about before. But what's up with the learning scale on EVE? I've played EQ, DAoC, WoW, EQ2, SWG, and a few others...but this game is by far the hardest I've ever tried to play. I'm going on the 14 day trial and I don't even think I want to log back in it was so hard to do anything.

And the freakin tutorial. Oh my god can you say boring! The tutorial kept on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on. None of what it was teaching me was of any relevance because I didn't know why I needed to do any of what it was teaching me in most cases.

I like MMORPG's that I can login to for a few minutes and actually get stuff done. EVE is not one of those games. I can tell just by going through the tutorial that it isn't. Going to have to give it a thumbs down on the fun factor and a double thumbs down on the bore scale.

Well i'm not sure if it's harder for noobs than b4 or not :

On one hand theres soo much more to learn and soo many people are ahead of them!

On the other hand atleast you can't be ganked as easy in safe space and theres more people to help them.

You didn't even make it past the tutorial and you're rating the game lol. Go community filter! I don't log in at all some days I get things done just as fast(skill system!). You can skip the tutorial you know, but good luck with that.

If you didnt make the tutorial then this is not a game for you. :)
This game is for people with patience. The tutorial is a good community filter. That is why EvE has a mature community.
The games you say you have played are all games you get fast into action, dont need much brains for them. :) This was not meant as a flame. Just could not say it in any other way.::::01::

imagehahaha.. well come back to EVE when you not are a kid anymore..there are nothing boring in EVE ,but you have to talk to other players ,you do realize that this is a MULTIPLAYER game

and if you only reach the tutorial..and you dont have the patience to continue ,then quit ,and go play the games maked for kids and peeps with no brain..try WOW and lineage2,just the games for you lol

Fataliss man, It's good that you really like EVE but you need to tone down the fanboyism. It kinda disproves the game being for mature people when you go off and call everyone who doesn't like EVE a mindless "kid".

This game has a very steep learning curve.  It also has an incredible amount of depth.  The level of complexity is enormous.  Absolute optimization of any ship you are flying requires detailed study, research and analysis to determine the best equipment configuration.

The original poster (my take) does not find these attributes to be attractive in an MMORPG.  Nothing wrong with that.  These are, after all, games.  One man's recreation is another man's work.  You can find plenty of examples in other areas of life (try baby sitting!).

Eve is a complicated game.  That is a strong point.  Less complex games don't hold my attention.  I played WOW for a couple of months.  After a while I just stopped logging in unless I had a beer in my hand.

Tip:  Do you just love WOW?  Is hack in slash your favorite game style?  Do you want to kill a monster, pick stuff up, stick in your armor slot and just keep moving?  Do you hate dying and losing all your stuff?  Are detailed economics just "a drag"?  Is the thought of researching days in a player driven market to find optimal ship equipment to build the "best" ship so you can wack someone a good one in a 30 second battle to tedious?  If these things I list are true, then you should skip Eve.

Be aware of the following however:  Games like WOW give you sugar up front and it tastes great.  Some people like more nutrition in their gaming diet.  Having played EQ1, EQ2, WOW and Guild Wars trial, I realized only Eve had the depth I need.  I believe Eve is the best game on the market.  Its a brain game for sure.

Final Advice:  If you are simply playing the tutorial, you don't really understand Eve at all.  I say that not to be spiteful.  It will take you 4 to six weeks to start to understand the game.  Eve will continue to unfold for you month after month.  WOW did not do that for me.  FYI

I played EVE for about 4 months and really loved a lot of aspects of it. The community is awesome. I joined a really good corp, and did things like trading and manufacturing and such. I hated mining, and found that I didnt have to mine if i didn't want to, but...

I found that mining was the BEST way to make money, and if you didn't mine, you had to be very resourceful. also my biggest drawback to the game just in my opinion was this... It started to feel as if every time that I logged in that I was clocking in to work. I was in a corporation, and I almost felt like I worked for a corporation...

now this may be fun for some, but to me it just felt like a responsibility. also i felt like the "grind" in this game was mission running. I would run mission after mission after mission, and i know other ppl in the game were doing the same thing, trying to increase their standings with certain tribes and to make ISK.

by far one of the most involved, machivellian economic simulators out there, but it just seemed to be lacking a certain something. I really wish you could customize the design of your ship as far as the way it looks, like you can customize your portraits... even tho there are a lot of different ship types to choose from, you should at least be able to paint yours a different color... also the weapon/ship upgrades dont change the look of the ship(or only slightly)...

    Eve is not hard.

You just have to calm down and go through the tutorial, talk to people and have patience the first couple of hours.

Once you pass the first couple of hours playing, you will prolly know if the game looks like your type or not.

In my case I felt in love slowly, but steady.

Eve is awesome, even more right now with the changes made in the past few months.

Also if you want a dedicated Dev Team with great ideas and that will read through your suggestions, then Eve-Online is your game.

This is eve's custom anti-retard/kid blocker (tm).

I will admit that eve has a huge learning curve, being a newb is hard. It takes a while, but if you wait you are well rewarded with one of the best MMORPGs out there.

Ive been playing for over a year (account is 2 years old) and im still learning new things every day. Most importantly is that this game is NOTHING like any of those other MMORPGs. If you are rating this game on a 14 day free trial than the anti-retard system has worked again. The fun is in a great corp, pvp, alliances and the depth of the game. I enjoy every moment of playing even if im hauling cargo for 20 jumps, knowing that theres no oher game out there even close to it.

Come back after you have played for a year and have done everything in the game and tell me you think its not fun...

I'm with Advanced Member on this one.  I've been actively playing Eve since Oct 2003 and I still learn things every day.  Depth, depth, depth!!!

I had placed my Eve account in stasis for nearly 6 months and attempted to play a few of the other MMO's out there (WoW, EQII, SWG).  Honestly, it was the 14 and under crowd that drove me out with their (go figure) childish "No I'm not!  Yes you are!!!!!!!!!!!" babbling in local. image When it came to cooperation with another member to get through a dungeon or accomplish something, you never knew if it was going to be bedtime or something else and they would just up and leave you with your image in your hand.  image

In the Eve universe, people will come along to help you out just to help (or kill you, whatever the case may be).

I think the most difficult part of Eve isn't operating the controls, its figuring out and training towards what you want to do for a "living", IMHO.  It took me over a year to figure that out... image

    I'm in a wierd boat
    I want to Enjoy EVE
but haven't been able to get involved in a corp that's active when I'm online... Every corp I found that was taking 'new' players (less than 1mil SP) was Euro based and didn't have many US timezone players (if any) which made my gameplay time very lonely indeed. Of those that were on, half were afk the whole time, I'm assuming they were mining in 1.0 sec or something afk with an indy or something. And the other half either didn't speak english or weren't all that talkative.

I'm a social person. I HATE being bored. I can handle long downtimes if there's someone to chat with, roleplay with, goof off with or whatever. But long downtimes with nobody to socialize with just gets old fast. The pace of the game is too slow for solo play (for me, some people love the quiet) and for the social aspect I've had a hard time finding a corp that is on when I am and will take someone w/<1mil SP.

I've been tempted lately to reactivate EVE (see I DO like the game... but it gets boring to the point where I always wind up cancelling... I've played in beta, 2 free trials and 1 month of real play from purchasing the game.

Who knows... maybe I'll reactivate and cancel enough that one day I'll have over 1mil SP :) Then I can get in a bigger corp or something :) LOL

To the folks who mindlessly flame everyone who posts a negative post about EVE:
All you are doing is making your community look hateful. Curb it and respond intelligently and without so much hatred. Realize that this game is NOT for everyone but don't call people "kids" if they don't like it. Because there are both plenty of kids who DO like eve and plenty of Adults who don't.

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.
    Sig image Pending
    Still in: A couple Betas

I noticed Eve community is being a bit tough on criticism. I understand people get very defencive about the game they like, but if someone has a problem with EO, and tries to share that with you guys, then I think what he expects is maybe a suggestion, or something positive, not bashing him for his problems with EO.

I tried to post my observations with criticism and a lot of suggestions, and ive received a fair amount of "ignorance" replies.

To answer OP, I had similar experience twice, both times I was so pissed off after trying to navigate around and learning controls that I simply abandoned my free trial. The 3rd time i managed to learn it and it was a pleasant experience for a month, but eventualy, the grind and inability to find my place around the huge iniverse killed the game for me. Im sure i barely touched the surface of the content, but i simply couldnt get through to the higher end.

From my perspective, EO has a lot to offer, but you need a lot to invest first. This game is best for hardcore gamers who have a lot of time and patience and who love PvP, space sim, space trading/harvesting/manufacturing and lots of content (in EO case content is mostly player made - PvP, player controlled space stations, corp wars, pirating etc). There isnt that much PvE and what is there is a bit routine for me. A casual player with 2-4 hours daily wont go far in terms of money/power, but its perfect for hardcore people. All those stories about huge corpwars and PvP read like scifi stories - very exciting!

Anyway, back to the topic. I understand what OP was feeling when he couldnt go through with the tutorial, ive had the same tough times with it. And by couldnt i mean not that he didnt have enough skills, but that it didnt excite him to try hard enough.

My advice, if you like space sim, lots of open PvP and you have plenty of free time then give it another try. Its a bit hard to learn, but the high end content (as far as I read about it) is well worth the trouble.

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

    This is EXACTLY my story!
I love the concept of EVE because my favourite game of all times was ELITE, a space trading/sim game made for old old spectrum/commodore type of computers, but i hate how some elements were implemented by devs). Id love to rejoin Eve again, but I would probly end up like last time, floating in space fighting PvE pirates, mindlessly mining and unable to earn a big profit out of it.

I also couldnt get into a good corp so I think that what pretty much pushed me away from the game. I think its critical to join a well organized and social corp. I failed, got bored and canceled ::::21::
