How do you rate MMORPG's?

Me personably I rate them of the fact of community and gameplay. I am one of the few people how will just buy another MMO just because it came out, then I rate it after 2 months of playing every single one.  All that is truth is shown by just 2 months of trying it, going on someone's opinion isn't good enough, what if they have different tastes in games.

What I'm trying to say is that take a risk, try a game.

Now, how do you guys rate a game?

Played ---> Earth and Beyond, Everquest, Planetside, Star Wars Galaxies, City of Heros, Lineage II, Everquest II, Final Fantasy XI, Dark Age of Camolot, Guild Wars

Tried ---> Anarcy Online, Matrix Online, EVE Online, Asheron's Call, Ragnorock Online

Playing ---> World of Warcraft - 54 Orc Warrior on Doomhammer named Broly

Well, a game with absolutely no RP gets a 0 in RP, make sense? ::::31::.

...ok just wanted to say that after I've seen so many people say "no RP whatsoever so I gave it a 6 in that area".

TBH I really only rate the endgame, because that's the part that's supposed to last forever in MMOs.

    ----------------------------------
MMOs Retired From: Earth and Beyond, Project Entropia, There, A Tale in the Desert, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Eve Online, City of Heroes/Villains.

    MMOs Currently (worth) Playing: None.

    MMO hopefuls: Age of Conan.

And I rate the trip TO endgame. Cause no endgame really lasts forever... which is why we have multiple character slots. ;-)

It's also the reason I'm so stoked about The Chronicle... cause once you get to the top in your main skill (I want to do slings...), you can start on any other skill in the game. But if you let your main go unused for awhile (say I did some hammer) it will be subjected to Attrition... so really there's no end.

As for "Uber Mobs" at the end of the game... what good is having an ubermob that you go stomp over and over?

Personally, DAoC is great for end-game.. haven't played it but it's the opposite of WoW e.g. sort of lame til max level, then the fun begins.

EDIT: Haven't played to max level I mean.. and if adding ascii is against the rules.. Just ask me, I'll remove it.

I tend to rate them from everything from graphics, customer support, "fun factor" and stuff like that.

If I get to the point that I can't play it anymore and uninstall it and usually don't install it for a while [Like I did with Guild Wars], then the number usually drops since it didn't hold my 'chicken' like attention span.

I rate a mmorpg exactly as you've described, although I'll admit I am shallow and graphics is very important to me.  It's not just that I like pretty pictures . . . it's also because I paid a LOT of money for my video card so I want a high tech graphics engine so I can at least see how my money was well spent!

Seriously though, I also purchase most mmorpgs t hat come out to give them a try and see if there are any great features in them.  Community and Gameplay are key, as well as graphics as I've said, and immersiveness/believability of the gameworld.  Just to give an example of what I mean, I don't consider the gameworld of Everquest II to be as believable as I'd like, due to the instancing of main zones and because there are really no weather effects at all.  On the other hand, I find that EQ2 is extremely immersive with it's lore, graphics, etc.

It gets to be difficult sometimes to try a mmorpg and decide that I am going to quit playing it, just because I like many them, I only have time for 1, maybe 2 though.  There are really only a few bad ones out there in my opinion, so I am left with a shelf full of quality mmorpgs that I would love to play but can't.

Well i make sure i play it first, i always notice how many people rate a game before bothering to play it, i supoose in terms of hype thats not too bad a thing, after all its 'hype'.

Nothing wrong with caring about graphics tho Tym, but some i play, including the one below in my sig have terrible terrible graphics, my snes had better graphics than it, but the community and 'funness' make up for it.

The main thing has to be how well the game can hold your attention and makes you want to play it so much it could completely foul up your RL. MMORPGs are supposed to be huge time sinks that you want to play for hours on end or else it's not worth the monthly fee you keep shelling out. The fun and value ratings go hand and hand really as if you have a lot of fun playing it it'll be worth the money but if you can't stand it even if it's cheep or free you get nothing out of the money and/or time spent playing it. The rest can help or hurt the game but if you really like how it plays unless the scores in other areas are really bad they can be ignored.

Usually I won't bother to review a game as most don't give a crap about other's opinions plus the ratings and reviews can always be messed up with multiple accounts and lies. Although if I really liked a game I'll put in at least a month of play time to get a good run at it while trying many things and talking with others in the game before reviewing. Then if I just couldn't stand it I'll try to get a bit more out of it through the game site, manual and their forums before writing it up. Either way I'll try to be completely honest about it and focus on the main points.

I play free trials then decide if I like the game or not.

I rate mmorpgs by how much content the patches bring every month. I do not rate them their community, because you can easily seperate yourself from almost everyone.

Also by how the developers talk to the community.. like do they have news about what they working on and stuff.

It sems like most reviews of morpgs are reveiw in the same way as any other games. The graphics/story/content... There is way more then that in a mmorpg that makes the game

I had a long drawn out post about this but changed my mind since I ended up repeating myself. Here's how I judge MMORPGs.

    - Presentation of the level grind. There is always going to be a grind of some kind and I've come to accept this but it's all about presentation and the illusion created to hide it in the end. This is the most important thing for me and is what I want to know about a game first and formost above everything else. This could even make my worthiness of price feeling lessen. I want to feel I've progressed in a decent manner. Doesn't mean I have to level all the time but some progress should be made. I don't want to feel like I'm actually working. Earning something and feeling like you are working are two different things I feel.

Good example of this: World of Warcraft, Everquest 2(at least in the beginning before you leave the cities), Anarchy Online, Eve Online
Bad example of this is : Final Fantasy XI, old school EQ, Dark Age of Camelot, and Star Wars Galaxies after Combat Upgrade and the change of xp that was recent

    That's just my opinion though.

    - Worthiness of price (truth I feel is a LOT of games aren't worth their high monthly price or high box price and is raised simply because the compnay can and know people will pay even if some stop paying). This is going to be different for each person. Hnestly I feel that no game is worth the raise in price over the years since nothing has ever changed. Yes more areas have been added but so what. You are just replacing old areas with new one with the old ones not being used anymore so you might as take them out of the game. EQ1 is a good example of this. Large parts of the game are or were just plain empty due to people being in new areas. Waste of server space. New areas are the same thing anyway. You do the same thing you did in the old areas but with new monsters or just new versions of old monsters, doing the same thing. I just don't see how price increases are justified or then because they can do it. Also I don't buy that "server cost have gone up" crap. So many games are out now, meaning the number of people playing a game are going to drop(less struggle on a server), bandwitdh cost as actually dropped if I recall(another drop in spending on their side), no real inovation on these games but just redoing what they already did(don't really think there is a added or drop in cost here. They raise the price cause they can and want more money but without even showing they deserve more money. Which is why I never went back to EQ1 after the price increase to $15. Didn't feel the game was even worth that and why I don't play new games that are $15 past 2 months with the 2nd being after the free month or when the need to play again is really strong.

    - Actual quest and how many there are. If I just want to kill things or peopel I'd play a FPS or a single player game. I want to play and take part in quest that can only be done on a MMORPG due to the size of the game since no single player game has come out that compares.

    - Last would have to be how it plays on my system. Now I don't have a top of the line system but at the same time I don't have a crappy one either. I have a 256mb graphics card, broadband or modem(depending where I am) connection, 512mb of ram and a processor that is 2+ ghz. Now I don't expect to run setting on high in everything but if a game is sluggish on my system or bad on medium settings or I'm forced to go out and buy something to make it better like more ram then the game is getting a negative view in my system. I like to think myself of having a average computer by today's standards. It cost money and time to upgrade a system. A lot of times my system is fine for other computer games that have been recently released. So I don't feel the need to do the upgrade to something higher unless I feel the price is right. EQ2 is a game I actually hate due to it's system requirements and the need for more ram then I already have. Even on low setting or the lowest I still lagged like crazy in places like South or North Qeynos or the Harbor but fine everywhere else. Those being the center of the city and you have to go through it kills all enjoyment when something like this happens.

Well those are my feelings on it. Community, PVP, PVE, company politics, zones vs seamless, grouping vs soloing, etc don't really matter to me as much as the above do.

i take the rating on a funny way.

first i look or the gameplay isnt that what they always do. (like click walk, stupid weak training attributes, like gate to heavens)

i like new idea's, tibia has houses but the rest is a little bit weak, but houses are a good idea.

and i rate them for combat and (on very stupid games, graphics)

    everyone BATTLEON
