I NEED TO FIND A GOOD MMORPG!!!

Hi everyone, i have a problem, i first played an MMO 3years ago, it was star wars galaxies just as it came out, i LOVED it, became obsesed, the best game ever, after being the 3rd richest man on my server, had 3 wifes and owned an imperial guild. I quit though because Sony online with there pathes ruined everything and live fun canteinas turned into macro zombies.

now i cant join any other RPG's with out being disapointed, When everquest 2 was released i joined that, Its rubish everyone does exacly the same thing in a world the size of 2foot. Then Secondlife (i like non combat parts of MMO too), made a few bob but never had the SWG fun.

Is it just because SWG was my first MMO that i cant find one as good? Where do i go from here? i need the buzz of a brand new MMO with 100000's of players.

Please some one help i wana get back in to MMO gaming!!!

Part of the problem is you're spoiled. SWG, despite it's bugs, has the most depth and the best system out there. It's problems, as you yourself said, are caused by LA and SOE's mismanagement of the game. The game itself was very very good. On par with, and in some ways better than, UO.

Also, typically your first ever MMO will always be the one you remember most fondly... except for the poor souls who got their start with something like Horizons or Mourning :)

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Although there is some truth to this, it's also true that the original 2 were still vastly superior GAMES than anything released since.

Lazy development, and seeking the quick buck, have perverted MMO designs into what you see today.

There are some exceptions like World of Warcraft, where the game itself is exceptional, but all the peripheral necessities of delivering that MMO to the public had been overlooked. However, the general rule holds true. The makers of SWG were deluded, under the assumption that two things would sell...it's STAR WARS, and it's BETTER GRAPHICS. You can see for yourself the complete lack of the ART of game design where that game is concerned.

For 2 years after release it was totally unbalanced, and couldn't even really be called a game. You simply interacted with the graphical environment - you were never really playing a game.

Everquest had it's problems, but it was at least a game to be played, it had purpose to an adequate extent. Everquest at release...had more content 8 years ago than any game in existence today. Each class had so many spells and abilities to juggle that it was daunting at times. Since then, each class in any game has an extreme limitation of abilities, even EQ 2! To make matters worse, in the name of balance they are herded into the box as it were, forced to comply with what the developers intended, rather than the wide-open system of combat and freedoms of EQ and UO. EQ had vastness of space, where others try to give the impression of space without actually having to fill empty spaces with unique creatures. DAoC is one example, as when you play on each of the 3 realms you find exactly the same creatures only with different names.

Developers of late have been busy tricking people into THINKING they are buying a great game, instead of actually providing one or anything.

SWG is starting to be developed in the right direction, anybody can see that, as the professions are being addressed at this time. However, given the huge development team at SOE, the massive backing, and 5 years of development, SWG TODAY is what it should have been at release. Those resources were wasted in trickery rather than good meaty game play. In the case of SWG, the developers got lost in the science of game design and forgot all about the art of it. Not the art in terms of graphical content, but the CREATIVITY of design, that which the MMO industry had suddenly been deprived after EQ.

"WOW check out the MMOs!" Sure, maybe Everquest being my first, there is some amount of nostalgia. But strip that aside as I have, and I also realize that there was a reason for that nostalgia that is not necessarily about it being the first-kiss syndrome. There are a number of things that were done with EQ that have never been done since, simply because the developers these days see clearly the REVENUES, but they do not see the creativity, the art of it. They consistently sacrifice more and more creativity in the name of getting the product out the door and collecting the big bucks. But they are lazy, complacent, oftentimes incompetent. Unwilling to do what is necessary to make it a GAME.

This is how I see it.

I couldn't have said it better... I started out with SWG too and had a rush... and now I keep getting disapointed.

I haven't played same mmo for more than 3 months since swg. Tried almost the whole market but i can't find anything. Currently I'm waiting for pirates of the burning sea but i keep low profile and low hopes just to ensure not being disappointed. Its hard though!!

    Good luck!

Nothing captures your imagination like your first MMO. There's something magical about logging in that first time to a new world and realizing it's populated not with NPCs, but with other players like yourself. Later, you start to see it for what it is, just another game...and a remarkably shallow one at that.

I still enjoy playing MMOs, and I'm looking forward to more and more hitting the market. Each one tries something just a little different, and some are downright innovative. Someday we'll have MMOs that are as rich and detailed as some of the best single player games, like Knights of the Old Republic or Baldur's Gate.

It's a tough thing. You get used to the control structure and world rules for the MMO you start on, and anything that doesn't live up to that is very alien, hard to get used to and it seems poorly designed. I started on WoW, and since have tried DAoC, CoH, and AO. All of them were either less intensive with character development or had an unintuitive control scheme. Eve Online is the only one that's captured my interest, and I think that's just because it's SO alien to any of the others that it's like another first MMO.

Perhaps it is not simply a fond memory of early MMOs that holds the viewer, but rather the uniqueness of each.

The early graphical MMOs (Ultima Online, Asheron's Call, Everquest, etc....) each had a unique play style to them (even if it was often just pretty pictures put on top of a fairly simple MUD underpinnings).  Playing each game felt notably different, and the feature set wasn't just carbon copied across them.

Unfortunately, as Publishers seek to cling to the known rather than taking risks, I feel like we've moved towards even greater uniformity.  Asheron's Call 2, which should have been a great game for example, instead decided to dumb itself down and aspire to mediocrity.  You can see the results.  Everquest 2 isn't exactly getting rave reviews at the moment either.

WoW doesn't get its recognition from being groundbreaking, but instead from taking the known pieces of MMORPG design and doing them extremely well.  Coupled with a wickedly strong franchise, that's a good path for financial success.

However, all our aspiring MMORPG titles that don't have Blizzards rather fearsome financial resources should really be thinking harder about how to differentiate themselves.  Give me more Shadowbanes, or Shattered Galaxys that try to do something unique that relies on good underlying game play _any day_.  We really do need some standout concepts and improvement to advance the industry, not yet more tired rehashs of already travelled ground.  Why expect users to pay monthly fees to play a game again that they've effectively played before?  Or even worse, something hideous like SWG, where they're expected to pay monthly fees to play no game at all.
