Mythic dropped Imperator to build this. Not sure why, maybe it's the big brand name grabbing them by the throat and starving oxygen.

I don't think Mythic will capitalise this title all the way up to this point...But with Warhammer Online, Mythic has the potential to be the biggest RPG company by the end of the decade (unless DDO do awesome, in which case it would be impossible to bypass them, but I have doubts about DDO, in fact Dragon Age is what may save the day for WotC).

Now, it is quite unlikely to happen...but if Mythic play their cards well and fine, their fanbase is big enought for them to climb the ladder, all the way to the pole position, ahead of WotC and Blizzard.  (Which in turn would be great for everyone, since Blizzard need a MMO to outdo WoW if you want them to perform well...it is the way they are)

Mythic is an open minded company and they CAN become the big RPG player.  Of course, they can also listen to the wrong advices and completely screw it up.  The changes they did in DAoC are certainly looking promising however...and reading Imperator let's you believe they understand a LOT in the last years.  We will see, all their life to this point could barely be like the intro to this new chapter.

I think your negelecting a lot of important MMOs that will be coming out in FOUR YEARS. Thats a long time, Huxley will be out, Lord of the Rings Online, and some smaller ones like Pirates, DNL, and Conan. In any case I don't think D&DO is as big a contender as some think. Also who cares how big it gets, as long as it survives and you don't join a dieing server, the important thing is that the developers stay involved and don't get greedy.

Lord of the Ring is in the same boat (Turbines) than DDO, and since D&D is a significantly stronger franchise, it is unlikely (but not impossible) that Lord of the Ring beat D&D...It would need to be twice the quality at the very least.

I am sorry to disappoint you, but all the others contenders you name don't have a strong franchise and neither have a great marketing.  Vanguard has the backing and a strong marketing, and many EQ fans will consider it strongly...and Sigil = a big city in D&D...so maybe Vanguard...but Brad visions are to small, so it wont happen...they are not bad vision, but they lack the american dream.  He dont think big enought.

See, a better product that lack either the fanbase or the marketing (or both) never catch on a product who have those, it take many releases to catch on them.

HJ would be a strong contender...but they lack both, the fanbase and the marketing...they progress slowly (but certainly if they do good work).

And been the bigger is certainly not the only thing that matter...but I am sure Mythic care to become the new world leader in RPG if they can help it...and Warhammer was the chance they try to capitalise on, and I certainly wont blame them.

I don't really know the current D&D fanbase, though at least for D&DO it does seem to have good marketing. Warhammer on the other hand is nothing compared to LoTR. Don't get me wrong, I got into Warhammer 40k myself, but I think in general table top games haven't had the best results porting to video games, Warhammer being a prime example of this. Warhammer Online has had a rocky start, but LoTR: Online seems to have a lot of issues as well. I don't want to get my hopes up, I've been dissapointed with what I've seen in Warhammer games, including Dawn of War. We'll see though, you seem to know a lot about the developer, so I could be pleasantly surprised.

I think you are confusing warhammer the pen&paper RPG with warhammer the tabletop game.  They are very very different.  Warhammer 40K and warhammer fantasy tabletop games are similar though.  I think this game will be mostly based off the pen&paper RPG.  There is no past or present computer game that is even remotley similar to the setup of Warhammer the pen&paper RPG yet.  It is definitely not a D&D clone.

No, he's actually not confusing it, well not completely :)

Just recently, a new edition of Warhammer RPG was released which is quite in sync with the tabletop games (some minor tweaks in the system to make it more closely resemble the tabletop games, not to mention huge changes in the background info --> description of the world now takes place in then period of time that follows Archaon's attacks on the Old World, etc...)

Oh.  I didn't know that.  I used to play warhammer the paper RPG alot but that was a long time ago.  I always wanted them to come out with a MMORPG of it.  Have you played the old edition?  If so is the new better than the old?  I had heard they were coming out with a new edition but I thought it got scrapped or something because I never heard of it again till now.  But I havent been paying that much attention to it.  Thats good i will have to check it out myself.

Well, I've played the old one (lots of times :-) ), and I've only read the new one. But it seems a little bit more balanced and it takes longer to level up your character.
I cant comment on the scenarios and sourcebooks yet, as I'm too busy collecting the new World of Darkness atm to start buying all Warhammer books just yet :-)

I think its more of a game design thing, Warhammer is more along the lines of what Mythic is good at. Imperator was going to have 0 PvP (which made babies cry BTW) You never know, they may bring Imperator back after Warhammer.

I'm sure there were lots of reasons behind putting Imperator off, other than just to make Warhammer.

    My opinion is:

    1. Warhammer has a bigger draw

    2. More diversity in Warhammer.

    3. More interest.  Look how much people talked about Warhammer than Imperator on this site.

That's just my opinion.  They certainly gained a subscriber here with Warhammer.  I ignored Imperator.

Completely unrelated. I know they happened close to the same time but trust me the 2 had nothing to do with each other. Imperator was postponed because it just wasn't shaping up to be a game we felt comfortable putting on the shelves. That is the only reason. Imperator was postponed months after we acquired the WH license and that acquisition had been in the works for months before we announced anything, just like most anything that happens in the gaming industry.

Thank you for saying so, I had read your release on that matter, but I as well didn't believe it, but the simple fact that you are reading, and listening to true players and what they are talking about, tells me that you guys care, and that you mean it when you say it.  I believe you now.

And I'm still glad you have Warhammer to work on, can't wait to see it.
