So, I am spending some time reading the DnL boards, mainly the guild boards, looking to see if there are any mature, family, casual guilds who I might want to look into. What I found is that it seems like 90% of the guilds are roleplayers (and a bit nutty at that). Of course, "mature" and "role play" are virtual opposites.
So, what's the deal, does anyone know? Having played EQ, Horizons, CoH, WoW and spending some time in a few others MMOs, I think I have a good idea how they work. I don't see anything covert in the game design that says you have to role play. Why the interest from the role play crowd?
While I'm asking inane questions: why are there so many DAoC people at DnL? Is there some core similarity between DnL and DAoC?
None-the-less, the game itself looks quite interesting. Assuming they accomplish their design goals the game may be popular enough to fill up their single server. That should lead to a very interesting dynamic to have 100,000 people on one server. I know I am definitely going to try DnL (although avoiding the RPs of course).

Interesting that you think most clans are roleplay clans. That must be because of the land conquering PvP. You are either Dark or Light and they fight against each other for land like two large alliances. You can't escape that kind of casual roleplay. So realm vs. realm is a big part of this game just like DAOC (only done lots better with the possibility of large (200 players) battles anywhere on the map.
Don't confuse what most clans do as hard core roleplay in which players are forced to conform to some arbitrary story line that has no cause and effect in the game. Because so many clans will exist in Dark and Light clans need to differentiate from each other with themes. These themes lead to natural allies and enemies further opening up PvP possibilities.
For example, my clan (Age of Judgement) is themed around dragons having as natural enemies Dark Elf clans and anyone who protects the dragon enslaver, Dragoon. So not only do we go after territory but also clans that are themed differently. Hopefully we will find an honorable role play opponent clan with whom we can organize set-piece battles and events subject to various rules. These battles will be different from the open ended battles and strategies for territorial control.
And yes we are a family friendly clan structured for both hardcore and casual gamers.
I Have no clue where your comming from but it's the exact opposite. Most Role-players stem from the early 80's and use to play Dungeon & Dragons. With the advent of early MMORPG's it was a natural progression for that type of gamer... we're older and have the money to play these types of games for long peroids of time.
Most role players stick within one world for as long time and stick with 1-2 characters. WE are the type of player these franchinses love, because we offer 2-3 years of steady even monthy income... unlike the "flighty" younger crows who cares nothing of their character and ready to jump on the next bangwagon.
Dark & light is building on heavy lore.. meaning you can base your character on this and build him to fit within the game world. Make a place or fit in... though you might possibly be the cancer that runs around with a character called Lazer or Big Dawg... therefore showing us your intelligence and ability to be creative.
