If this is true, it is a very sad story. Since this prolly was all the kid could afford to get a good computer and he thinks that replacing the video card was all he needs to do after listening to a bad advice.
I would suggest this kid to either stick to consoles or to never open his computer himself and let techies do it next time.
I would not dismiss this story as false, I easily can see some peoples doing that...well at least he learn and wont do the same mistake again, hopefully he will not turn away from computers because of this, just let others folks maintain his hardware! His friend prolly didnt mean to cut it, but he did understand it this way, so he actually says his friend tell him so...but yes, I can see this happening.
