Getting back into MMORPG! What is good one?

I have not played an MMO since Asheron's Call and Anarchy Online first started. I now have a new computer and Broadband for 1st time and am looking to get back into playing. I have looked at message boards for all games and am confused. I see many problems with all of them.

I am a very casual gamer who does not play for hours every day, but I do enjoy playing and am looking for a good game. I like all aspects but I am more into PVE and teaming up with people against NPC's. I like role-playing also but I also enjoy the social aspect of the game. I am a nice guy who likes to hang out with nice people. I do not like to prey on newbies or be cruel to other players.

What is a good game now? I was looking at WOW but I am hearing it is TOO easy. I am not newbie to MMO, but it has been a while. I used to like the concept of Anarchy Online but at the time it was plagued by too many problems and too much lag. I like Fantasy but don't mind other settings.

I am just looking for a fun time online with some role-playing and teaming up but I also like to solo from time to time.

Any ideas?

I agree, go back to Anarchy Online, nostalgia runs rampant in the game, unless you live in shadowlands. If you're pretty casual, Dark Ages of Camelot is one of the easiest games to get to the end game, which is the best part of the game. probably harder than WoW still though. ::::28::

My vote goes to Dark Age of Camelot and i've played them all my friend. Dark Age is the only one i'll go back to. Best pvp hands down.

Sounds like you may well like the Saga of Ryzom. Theres a week's free trial, just make sure you get to the mainland before you decide if its for you or not.

Most the community favours PvE over PvP, theres great lore and storylines and lots RP as a result.

Lots of new content coming soon too, including the ryzom-ring develop your own scenario tools ;)

Of all the recent mmorpg's i tried, Ryzom is the best around i'd say.

DAoC and WoW would be a good choice. Both are easy to jump in and level fast.

like they said go back to AO.  WoW isn't for casual gamers, especially when you get to the end game instances.  also, to my knowledge, there are no nice people in WoW.  myself included. image

WoW is very good if it's your first mmorpg or if you're a young kid,

i'd definitly choose Ryzom if you want something more 'spicy' image

Its not that they are not nice people its just that 40% of the game is played by 8 yearolds and therefor do not know the diffrence.

Thanks guys!!! i appreciate your help!!! I think I will go back to AO. I liked the look of Dark Age of Camelot but I have heard that it is hard for new players since most everyone playing it is at high levels!!! Is this true? Should I give DAoC a try?!!!

Also, i now agree that WOW is probably not for me. WHen it comes to the social aspect of online gaming I am a mature, serious gamer and HATE playing with little kids!!! I am 34 years old and refuse to play a game with 8-12 year olds!!! That is just my opinion, there is nothing wrong with kids it is just that I have NOTHING in common with them and I am looking for a different gaming experience then they are. The same goes for "adults" who think they are 8 years old and YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!! Act your age, be nice and stop killing allies and newbies just because you have reached level 150 and are bored with the game. Find another hobby and leave the rest of us alone!!!

AO is a good choice its still more then alive and kicking. Lots of character to this one. AC was an awesome game also, Im not sure what the state of the game is these days. They just put out a new expansion this summer so maybe its trying to make a comeback.

Other then the older ones, most of the newer games you have a lot of trade offs.

WoW is very casual friendly up front until you hit cap then its a hard core gamers game. GW is pretty good but its all instanced and the community is not the best. Either one are a good choice if you are looking for great graphics and fun gameplay. Depth isn't really there however.

DAoC is a good choice, but again I'm not sure of the current state of the game. If you pick a high population server you shouldn't have a problem. It has a great variety of races/classes and content. Its a bit slow paced though. Travel is (or was) a complete pain in the butt. I think they are adding player owned horses now.

City of Heroes is great if you are looking for something completely different. Its all action though, NCSoft games tend to be very straight forward, shoot, kill, blast, repeat.

EQ2 and SWG are very nice graphic games but the content just stinks especially if you compare them to AC or AO.

I'm playing Lineage2 for about a week and its not to bad so far. Great graphics, standard gameplay and content, good variety of locations and races/classes. Strangely enough I haven't had any problems with gankers yet. I'm sure at some point I will.

Thanks again!!! I think I will give AO a try again. Seeing as how I don't have a top-of the line computer I am not looking for the best graphics. I am more into options, gameplay and community.

How is lineage 2? I have not heard much about it.

    I have a p4 1.7ghz, 1024 ram, ATI x700 256mb video card.

Bonus with AO is its free to play if you just use the base game. No charge until you want the expansions.

L2, well I have only been playing since the weekend so I do not have a bunch of time in yet. Like you Im a bit older with career and kids so I don't get much time. So far I can say its is a beautiful game. The graphics are superb. The music is very nice also if you listen at all while you play. It plays very smooth and I had zero tech problems. I'm not sure how it would run on your PC though. Its very basic at the start, class choices are fighter and mage. (dwarves dont even get that choice) but at lvl 20 you start branching out into more specialized classes and then again at 40. I have no idea about the community. No one talks..........at all. I was in the starter town last night and there where at least 10 other people, no one talked. I am a bit reluctant to talk because of the bad rep the game has lol. Its open PvP but so far no one has attacked me.

I was expecting the total worse from this game. I was thinking I would never make it out of the newbie starter platform before giving up. I was wrong. One strange things I noticed is that there are a ton of female avatars running around. In fact I had the only male last night. Weird. I must say, the female avatars look great. Don't play Dark Elves in front of the kids lol.

Im sure this game is like one of these seductive Dark Elves, its going to charm me into a false sense of security and then rip out my throat with a +150 spoon when I'm not expecting it.
