If Horizons was free..

If Horizons was free, (as in you have to buy it, but no monthly fee) Would you play it?

I always get the urge to play this sometimes, but i do not want to pay the monthly fee at all. Im already subscribed to the Station pass +Extras (23 bucks a month) and CoH (15 bucks a month).

I love the class system of this game, sometimes i feel like playing a mage, or sometimes a warrior, but i never have to start a new character, i just go to a trainer of the class i feel like playing (if you have previously joined that school that is)

Anyways, just wondering if you would play it if it didn't cost monthly and why/why not?

I also loved the fact that u could cross train in classes so a warrior could end up with some healing spells etc, the possibilites were endless.

And would have a go from time to time if there was no fees.

I'm currently playing the game, but, if we could wind back the clock and HZ were to be released as a game similar to GW?  Sure, I'd buy it.  The multischooling aspects are pretty neat, and the crafting system is great.

I'm with Khoal on this one, I still play it and pay for it monthly too , so I would have been more then happy to just have bought a box or an expasion and begun playing it for free ::::20:: .

However, that being said, I believe now and always have that Horizons should lower their monthly cost .. atleast alittle as a form of good gesture to all the players of the mmo community. The reasons are somewhat obvious:

    1) The game is unfinished and needs improvements in many key areas. Don't get me wrong, I still thinks its a pretty decent game as is (afterall I still play it) and they have made some really great progress over the past few months which has made gameplay far far better then in it was in the past, but none the less it is still somewhat unfinished and lacking in a few key errors.

    2) The game is in somewhat of a pay to play beta and has been since release. They have recnetly in the last few months made some really good changes and appear to be rebuilding and rethinking this game from the ground up and everytime they do so the majority of players and non players are fairly impressed by what they see. This is evidence to me that this game still has some hope left in it of meeting its great potential that it undoubtly has.

So .. I believe .. that if they was to advertise this game at .. oh lets say $9.99/month instead of $12.95/month unitl the above reasons no longer apply, then subscriptions would increase enough to offset the $2.94 a month loss and possibly even results in more profit then current by the increase in subs. I know a $2.94 discount on the game isn't much but it may be enough to make a difference in gaming industry whose monthly fees are rising rapidly every year. Then again, I could be totaly wrong and the company would go belly up doing such a move ::::37::

The only reason I don't play Horizons is that I'm paying for the Station pass. I loved Horizons and may come back too. I just can't afford to pay for it atm, trying to save money for a house.

At the very least every time there is a "free" trial offered they should make it available for previous subscibers too. As is stands now the only ones allowed a free trial are "new" accounts. I feel the free 7 days should apply to previously cancelled accounts as well. It works for EQ, people go back for a month and wind up resubscribing and playing again all the time, which is why they do it.

I played the free trial and enjoyed aspects of the game. I really liked the races and the crafting, but I didn't find the combat to be terribly engaging. While the game definitely had more good points than bad points, I just didn't feel there was enough of interest to me to justify a monthly payment. If it were free (which I don't honestly expect to happen), I'd definitely play it from time to time.

If it was to go free i would most definatly play it, sadly i doubt it will and i just cant bring myself to subscribe due to the small population etc.

I sure would. I played it in beta and then right after release for a few months. It was pretty disappointing though, so I quit and never looked back.

But yes for free, or for say 5 dollars a month i could play it again.

If Horizons was free, CP Baker would pull its funding to Tulga Games.  Once that happens, Horizons will shut down and Tulga Games will fold.

Have played: CoH, DDO EQ2, FFXI, L2, HZ, SoR, and WW2 online

I loved the crafting in this game but found it more and more onerous to get the materials I needed to craft.  I didn't want to be the uber warior, I wanted to be the uber crafter.  Unfortunately they debased being a =good crafter by allowing everyone to be able to master all crafts.  So the dream of creating an economy via having crat=fters make and sell items fell flat because the majority of people got to be high crafters in multiple areas so no one needed to buy items.

That being said, I would play again if there was no monthly fee.  It might then be able to get the player base it needed to make it go.  It was a fairly empty world.

yup I would play it if it was free. Cause well than I wouldn't have high expectations. I actually would play it if it was $5 or 6$ a month. But I spend my MMO budget on 3 accounts in other games that are worth the $12 to $15 and where the devs have earned my gaming bucks.

But in all reality I hardly expect that to ever happen ;). Cause well David Bowman didn't go without any paycuts during chapter 11 I hardly would expect him to do so now.

Nope, I wouldn't play it even if it were free. It wasn't the cost that put me off, anyway. The combat was dreadful and the crafting became tedious before too long. I beta tested it and gave it 8 or 9 months (I very much enjoyed my guild) in release. Life's too short to give it any more of the time I set aside for gaming.

I played it for a few months and enjoyed it, but back then there were too many servers and the playerbase was small.

If the game went free, truly free, as in not selling in-game items/coin/advantages, then they could grow the playerbase which would make the game more viable since it is crafting centric.

If Anarchy Online can go free and support itself with in-game advertising, Horizons could do the same.

I wouldn't play this game even if it were for free. I played for 4 months about a year ago. Great level/skill system, suck-ass everything else.

    No thanks.image

If it's not worth paying for, it probably isn't worth playing either.

I started a Dragon on Horizons over a year ago. I liked the idea of having dragons as playable characters, which was why I played. But other then being a dragon, I found that Horizons lacked tons of content. The players on the server that I had chosen, were the worst. Little help was given when I started. No one ever grouped. The Grinding was more tedious then any other MMO I've played. All in all, I hated it. I tried it for 2 months, and I'll never return.

Why am I here? To give myself some status so I can access more on MMORPG.com. Don't think anyone will read this for a few months anyway.

But check out RF online. If you like PvP, this is the game to play. If you like Anime, this is the game to play. If you like Gundam or any other Mech styled genre, come check out RF Online. :)

You say that no one helped you, what exactly did you ask?

If you go about asking "How to play?" or "Can i have free stuff?" or "Looking for PL" Then ur not gonna get much response. Whenever i played this game, i was always invited to a guild (without asking) and then given free stuff and money (again without asking). I found the community in this game to be the best, other than EQ2 (except the guild in EQ2 on the AB, RP server, whose motto is "RPers are douches")

Seeing as there are only 3 servers, i doubt they are drastically different.

I played HZ for almost a year up to dec 04.

I played the 14 day free trial on Unity a couple of months ago to see if I could recapture the magic. The starter biped town was deserted, and the tutorial was woeful. The graphics looked dated and the gameplay was a grind from the very beginning. I went out of town to fight some monsters, to find only maggots, I went to mine some copper but it was boring. I could not get any quests, not even simple tasks, and was thoroughly bored.

Somehow a year earlier the game had seemed much more vibrant, interesting and refreshing after leaving the endless LFGing of EQ. But late last year I beta tested EQ2 and later played WoW, games with a wide range of content and things to do in the game. It spoiled it for me, HZ was just NOT the same.

HZ DOES have it's good points, such as the detailed crafting/gathering, multiclassing, dragons, and the ability to build houses and in a sense change the world through forming lively communties. But MOST of HZ is a grind, whether you want levels in crafting or adventuring. This type of mmorpg gameplay belongs to the past, or the far east (Korea), I want some adventure and content in my experience.

Take ALL the quests from WoW, ability to buy/ride a mount, the huge array of dropped loot, the dungeons and instances, rare/epic armor sets, the detailed designs of the locations and the number of NPCs and merchants, and combine it with Horizon's multiclassing, dragons, skill sets, hybrid abilities, the crafting/gathering, player housing and the world events, and I'd definately PAY to play, let alone play it for free.

WoW was fun, loads of content, but was over too quick. Horizons, whether you play a dragon or biped, has much greater longevity, but was SOOOO boring.

I got that feeling too, Finduilas. Almost as if instead of adding stuff to the game, they took bits of it away. Not only does it seem all the players have cancelled, but the mobs seem to have quit, too. It's a ghost town of a game now.
