I won't talk to long on the subject of EQ1 but it was the most fun I ever had in a video game, and I am the video game king. That having been said, right now I am enjoying EQ2 just as much if not more than EQ1. I'm in a good guild, not too big but not too small, and the combat revamp made the game much like EQ1 as far as challenge.
The only reason I couldn't go back to EQ1 is because the graphics are so phenomenal and the new places and lore are inriguing. That and a few of the gameplay enhancements make battles interesting.
If Everquest had a complete graphics revamp, and had a server that was pre-luclin, I would have a difficult time not playing it, but I'm having a blast in EQ2. It was boring at launch and now it's just dang fun.

EQ was to me like first love... Just on a bizarre, strange and twisted level... Since it was *sigh* a game...
Most fun I have ever had online was in the old world of norrath... SolB(Nagafen's Lair) being my favorite place...
However... I stopped on my 56th lvl... My computer couldn't handle the high end zones and I had some big real life events coming for me.
After EQ2 was released I played that on and off for about a half a year. But since I don't have access to the online world atm, I'm no longer playing...
Will start over on EQ2 1st of November tho... Can't wait! Haven't experienced the gameplay after the new changes...
Would I go back to EQ?
In a heartbeat! But only if there was a server pre PoK... I had lots of fun, but it took me almost a half a year to solo to lvl 56(with every1 else

Everquest was my first MMORPG. I can honestly say that I have yet to play another game that had me as immersed as that game did, not even WoW and EQ2. Mostly that was due to some other players who I had close relations with though, key word being "had".
In my own opinion, EQ is a vastly superior game to EQ.
I base my opinion on a few things, mainly:
Everquests vast superiority to EQ2 in terms of character customization, you have more armor, weapons, colours, overall diversity.
The freedom you had in EQ of exploring the world and finding things out for yourself is now gone. In EQ2 everything is packed up in neat little independent zones, with doors seperating each zone from the other and with no apearent conection between the zones in terms of story, ecology, geology, etc...
Class diversity, EQ had cool classes with lots of diversity and lots of diferent abilities, EQ2? 4 base classes that seperate into several subclasses... problem is... the subclasses are too similar to each other, it feels like your playing around with the same concept of base class but with slightly diferent flavours. In terms of skills... well, its basicly the same core skills but with diferent upgrades as you level, very bland.
In terms of gfx, i still prefer EQ gfx to Eq2, you may think me crazy, but the shinny plastic feeling of EQ2´s gfx was a big turn off for me, it seemed that nothing ever got broken or decayed, the buildings were always pristine in Qeynos, the streets always cleen, the outdoor zones were always too organized and divided into neat little sections. Maybe its just me, but the gfx in the game lacked any kind of "soul" in my view.
I can understand why other would like EQ2, but for me, the game had nowhere near the quality EQ had.
I would like to point out a couple of topics on the official EQ2 forums about the game gfx on armors and weapons.
Now, consider those links and the single official response one of them had recently, the devs said they were looking into the matter of lack of diversity. This was the same response they game months and months ago, dangling a carrot on a stick in front of players when they complained of these issues so many months ago and promissing that they were working on it... months later, the first "major" expansion in the game and still the same models are used for the diferent tiers of armors, why?
Now they show us the carrot again, but will we have to wait 6 more months for the expansion and some vague promisses that its beeing looked into?
Lets face it, this issue is never going to be resolved, the game engine simply cant handle it well or the 3d artists or tools are simply not good enough. I have wished since launch that my character be able to sit like a normal person on a chair? and yet, nothing. I have wished since launch that my t5/t6 armors didnt look like my t2/t3 armors, i have wished that not every item in the game look like it was bathed in water for the last century and came out looking rusty. /rant off

Spoken like someone who hasn't played since they revamped the classes in September.
EQ2 is now what it should have been at release. If you haven't played it since the CU I highly recommend giving it another try now. Especially if you enjoyed EQ1. The sub-classes are vastly different now and play very differently from their 'parent' classes.
I'm not sure how you can even pretend that EQ had more character customization than EQ2. EQ every person looked exactly like every other person. Characters look much more 'unique' in EQ2 than in EQ1. Now, I'll grant you that there were far more varieties of armor in EQ (after 7 years this is a silly statement though) once EQ was 4-5 years old. Obviously you didn't play EQ at release or even after Kunark. Everyone still looked the same. Everyone wore the same armor. Same as in EQ2. It took 3-4 expansions for people to really start varying in armor types.
As far as 'zones' EQ and EQ2 are BOTH zone oriented games. And EQ's zones were ***smaller***. As to storyline? I find EQ2's storyline MUCH easier to find than EQ's was.
As to gameplay? Since they made the changes EQ2 FEELS like EQ2 should have felt at release. The game quality took 10 steps up the ladder with the rework they did in september. It's much better now and truely is the successor to EQ. It's a shame they rushed the game to release last year instead of getting it to THIS poing first. Because now it's truely a quality game.

And as you can see, it's a big but. That was 1999, the devs were basically inventing the genre as they went. Not to mention the technology was somewhat less than it is now. There isn't much excuse for a 3rd gen MMO to come out with so little to show in that area, particularly given how much SOE pimped their super deluxe graphics engine. Which I might add, seems to have a lot of problems with the new generation of video cards. And what's with the lack of AA/AF?

Funny, that's what I kept saying before they ended beta, and people here freaked the hell out. My personal favorite was the chucklemonkey that hoped I died for saying the game wasn't ready, especially since they had just made a bunch of changes to the spells/combat arts at the last minute.
Of course, these same people all went on to post about how much the game sucked, and so on after release. Which kept me giggling like an insane little beaver for about 6 months.
Well, I was having fun back in january, and I'm having fun now And my cobalt chain looks hawt
Oh and there where a new Moorgard response on the armor/cloth thingy yesterday. More political yada, but think of it like this: Its *the* most debated subject on forums now (apart from the whines). Given the history of changes given to this game, is there any reason at all to believe that they *dont* work on something? I dont think so. I have a feeling it would be better if they just took their time and got it right instead of rushing something out to stop the community voice.
No matter what they change, there will be someone not liking it. If they do add even more blue into the cobalt plate armor, there will be someone that liked the deep blue thats there right now. Personaly I liked the way I could change armor in NWN. The game provided the stats, I could fully customize the looks. I really hope we will be able to do that in Eq2 someday too.
Just got done reading Moorgard's response. I'm guessing you're Snublefot
I agree that the NWN method would be nice. Certainly would go a long way to making people more recognizable by look alone. I don't think we'll see anything like that any time soon, as the performance hit would bring everything to a standstill. Me, I think it'd be a start if all the weapons, and armor didn't look like they were just drug up from the Titanic wreckage. Pristine armor/weapons should at least look pristine if nothing else.
Someone also mentioned Image Designers from SWG. While making it a crafting profession wouldn't be a good idea, it would be nice to see that level of customization in the character creation process. But again, I think it would be too much of a performance hit. Or that would be there excuse anyway.
What point is there in the devs adding a couple more colour variations when the same basic 2/3 armor models are the same?
Since relase that the community reps have been saying that the devs were working on the item diversity issue, since release that they have been telling us that they would fix the issue. How many many has it been, how many thousands have left the game because this supposed "next gen" mmorpg has less armor looks than ultima 6 had?
In my own opinion, i just think the art department for EQ2 should be fired on the spot, whomever came up with the art design for those freakin helms on the leather and cloth armors, whomever came up with the art design for the "robes" in the game, can anyone here say with a straight face that cloth armor in this game looks decent? or even leather armor? Its one big joke.

I was another that was saying "it isn't ready" and I went on to tell friends family and guildmates to wait 6 months to a year to buy. Pretty much all my friends from EQ1 are now starting to move to eQ2 because we feel it's finally "ready".
As far as armor/clothing variety goes? I'm pretty forgiving on that. They have already started to add new varieties and I suspect more are coming.

I don't know a single person who's left the game because the items lookd similar/the same. Most people who left did so over game play. Matter of fact most of the folks I know in game have been noticing the greater diversity of items lately. If this games items evolve the way EQ1's did you won't see a re-skin/design of current items. They'll remain the same as they always were. What you will see is NEW items coming into the game (Sharskin armor for example) that are skinned differently and/or modelled differently.
So the old stuff won't change but new stuff that's added to the game will bring more variety as the game grows. That's how every MMO in history has done it. It's just too problematic to try to go re-model already completed content.

Kemo if you want diverse armors play UO, you can even dye your armor there. Personally I would rather have 1 set of armor that looks amazing than 100 sets that look like cartoony crap.
