There's a couple of new screenshots of the Barrow-Downs over at the official site http://lotro.turbine.com

They're looking really good! image

Looks like they're doing a great job catching the whole feel of the Barrow Downs. If I happen to be anywheres near there hopefully I'll be on a fast horse. I bruise easy.

I know the devs have some superior machinery to work with, but every recent screen I've seen blows me away.  Things such as the grasses and other vegetation are beautiful.  And those willow leaves floating on the Withywindle, awesome!

Yeah at first I thought the screenshots looked too beautiful. As if they were a painting. Like the wispy affect of the grass for example. Especially the screenshots of the forest. Just looks incredible. This is a plus in my book as thats the whole Middle Earth feel I think Tolkienn wanted to give his readers.

To me Middle Earth was always more about the scenery and the inspiring landscapes and less about Dragons and Evil Wizards. Everything ranging from the awe inspiring images of the massive mines of Khazad-Dum down to a relaxing stroll through Hobbiton.

So far it looks like Turbine is getting the feel of Middle Earth down right.

I think that's why LOTR has endured for so long.  Tolkien built a living world that jumps off the pages, instead of a flashy pulp novel.  Same thing applies to movies these days.  What movies do you see getting awards and accolades?  The ones that took the time to really develop the world in which the story unfolds, draws the viewer in and makes em feel a part of the story.  Not the flashy, SFX computer generated gee-whiz-bang flicks.

Peter Jackson understodd that the effects are there to SUPPORT the story not BE the story. He was smart to have Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens write most of the dialoge and plot the emotional beats for the movies. If George Lucas had any brains he would have begged them to fix Revenge of the Sith. The new star wars movies were just God-Awful and you're talking to someone who stood in line for 3 hours when Star Wars came out in '77.

I felt the same way.  While I enjoyed the three newest movies as entertaining, they just didn't fill in the desire I had to see more of the Universe.
