I remember...

I remember fondly my first MMOG. I Remember the sense of awe I experienced the first time I explored the Greater Faydark as a young Wood Elf. I also remember getting lost in the forest many times.I would huddle in fear behind a tree in sneak mode hoping some stray orc wouldnt see and kill me there so I wouldnt have to pay someone to find my corpse for me.

I remember when the dark Elves held Befallen and getting killed on the bottom floor, how I stood at the entrance naked because the keys i needed to get back down to my body were ON my body. There were sometimes whole groups of us trying to fight our way back down with nothing but a rusty short sword hoping we could get back down and retrieve our gear.

I remember living in that world for nearly four years, and how I dearly loved every bit of it. Sadly the day finally came that I had to leave that world. I began in the days when the Iksar started walking the land and left when gods fell at our feet and Gates were discovered to discordial places. Since that time Ive walked in many many different worlds. If I said that Ive been to almost every one of them it wouldnt be a lie.

I still search for another world that gives me the same feeling as my first one did but sadly I have not found it yet. The search continues...perhaps one day I will get that feeling again, perhaps some day I will talk about this new world fondly as I look back at it and I remember...

I remember those days too :) I started however just months before the portal to the moon was discovered, and ended after the frogloks started to adventure.

Unfortunately you will probably never have that same feeling again. We all search and few ever find it. That first feeling of awe and excitement that we all experience in our first MMORPG is rarely if ever repeated. Unfortunately it is true, but it is how it is.

I remember this feeling with my first MUD. No graphics, but the gameplay had a lot to it. There was a lot to do, serious community, and every little detail was worth exploring.

I felt that excitement again twice. First, with Runescape. It was that, UO, and Everquest. UO had already been overrun by PK madness, and I shied away from Everquest because I just saw it as a MUD with graphics. Runescape was different, it was varied. There were so many things to see and do. The graphics were terrible even for then, but it was free!

Then came Ragnarok Online. It had real graphics, it looked neat. The people were nice, the combat was active and interesting, and the sound and music made it really immersive.

All of these declined in time, but not without fond memories.

Sadly, too many MMOs are boring now. Ill-coded, or just a hack of some other engine. Graphics aren't terrible, but rarely beyond mediocre. It's not amazing enough to justify such a lack of content. Once upon a time, ROSE would have been really fun despite its grind, but the community moved too fast to be just like every other MMO, and the world size and monster sparseness really accentuated the grind.

That rush of wonder comes with each new advent. We just eagerly await it. I personally hope the community takes its time maturing, leave the idiots, cheaters, powergrinders, and bot-maniacs to their own devices elsewhere for a while.
