I'm definately not jaded enough to think that even the devs don't care about the players and would just as much spit on you as shake your hand. Especially after having met several of SWG's devs and seeing the dedication and love for the game in their eyes.
I met Tiggs at Celebration 3. She spent the whole time repeating the same tired PREPARED statements to me "we want the game to have more broad appeal" everytime someone asked about the crummy CU for SWG. The one dev I chatted with said he'd love to do Hoth but thats not his decision
Is SOE all about the money.. you bet your arse. Is every employee of SOE all about the money? Not at all. MMOG's are hard ass work and there are MUCH easier ways to get a paycheck then be a dev on a MMOG. People seem to think that devs and such like Tiggs or TH or Pex or Greenmarine are millionares rolling in the money and laughing to the bank. They are ordinary americans working hard to get food on the table and bills payed off just like the rest of us. They love their jobs and many of them were players and fans before being empoyees. If they didn't, they'd move on.
Players insist they are clueless, moneygrubbers because they don't have the extremely detailed knowledge about every fascet of the game. Well perhaps if people would realize thats because the devs are working 10 hours a day on the game, not playing for 10 hours in the game. Seriously half the MMOG community is so jaded about that kind of stuff. I've been playing MMOG's for 6 years now, at times rather hard core. I'm not jaded about these companies, the devs or the games themselves, so I don't understand why so many others are. If I am jaded towards any one thing.. it's the part of the community that seems so idiotic and clueless to me. But alas.. theres always a bad apple in a bunch.. and when that bunch is 500'000 strong.. theres a lot of bad apples.
As to Hype.. thats an invention of the PLAYERS. Not the devs. As I often use as my sig on various boards:
Incorrect, 100% wrong here. I'll give you some examples on how SOE knowingly plants the seeds of hype and watches the players run with it.
In EQ2 they stated the characters would look so good that you would actually be able to recognize each person's toon by just seeing them. SOE repeated this hype by even releasing a character creation cd prior to launch. Of course it was total bs, yes it looked pretty good but nothing revolutionary done there like we were led to believe
In SWG at a Fanfest in Europe the players were shown Capitol ships. They showed a small clip and some screenshots which caused a huge round of applause. This single moment kept thousands of players in the game continually paying for that one possibility. Then SOE goes silent on the issue while players constantly bounce around ideas, possible missions, etc. I personally knew 30+ players in my guild waiting on that ship. Later after several months had passed it was asked during a q&a with a dev about the ship...devg response was something along the lines of that was just a dev playing around with his laptop and nothing would come of it. Overnight I saw 30+ friends in our guild leave totally steamed vowing NEVER to play a SOE made game again.
SOE knowingly does this crap on purpose because they know it will keep a player in the game and paying.

The high up of SoE care only about money.

But they are not fools.  They hire folks who care about making a great game and to convince us to play so they can make money.

The high up always consider what is the best possible investment in the game for the pay off, and considering they pay 20 millions for EQ2, it is not to bad.

In fact, SoE care a LOT more for their customers than a company like Blizzard, they should already have invest at least 1 month benefit in the game, and it is still not done.  LOL.  Blizzard is a lot more money hungry than SoE despite all your hatred for SoE.  SoE invest a LOT more in games than Blizzard.  SoE is more human in it way to make money.  Blizzard is a machine and doesnt care for anyone, staff or customers.

Do I trust SoE?  As long as it benefit them, yes I trust SoE.

How can anyone ever trust SOE now after what is happening at this moment.

    http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=nge_discussion&message.id=786&view=by_date_ascending&page=2

They got players to buy their expansion then screwed them over. Imagine being a CH and buying the expansion because you wanted to get that ch necklace to enhance your abilities. Then finding out CH is getting eliminated !!! Talk about bait and switch

They even lied to cover this announcement to many others who recently had unlocked. They couldnt get access to the village after publish 24. They were told it was a bug, a known issue and was being worked on. We now know thats total BS as it was turned off because the village is going bye bye.

How can anyone ever trust SOE after such blatant lies ????

Its one thing to just remain silent and then change a game. However, when someone like Tiggs posts BLATANT lies its in my opinion bordering on a criminal act. They throw corporate suits in jail over lying to stockholders, why not SOE then ?

    Hello,

I wanted to let you know we are investigating the loss of glowy status and monitoring this thread.

    Tiggs

If this isnt a blatant fat lie I dont know what would be.

Actually, in some way I think this shows that SOE and LA still care about the game.  They want it to live, they want to last for years and they're doing what they can to do it.  You may say this isn't what eveyrone wants, but how do we know if that's true or not?  The majority of players don't post on the forums and we can't see what they write in their little blurb that states why they're quitting.  Lets wait to judge it when it goes on TC.

As with any planned or implimented change in an MMO. It seems the community of their forums is split right down the middle. No surprise really, happens in every MMO.

No item decay will fix crafters all right! ::::15::

I don't really think about whether or not I "trust" a company. I look at a game and just decide to buy it or not, based on what it is and the opions of people I trust. Sometimes I buy a game on a whim, not knowing anything about it or the company that made it. I wouldn't trust SOE or any other company to catch me if I were falling... but, based on experience and reputation, I might buy one of their games. I suppose that's a sort of trust. I'd be more likely to consider the company or team who made the game, however, not the company that published it.

Games are strange animals, however... teams get together or are put together to develop a game. Sometimes that team only ever develops one game. Even the sequel to that game might be developed my a whole new team. A lot of people who loved and played EQ are very excited about Vanguard because of some of the people who are involved in it. I think its fair to say they trust that team to produce a product they will enjoy and, yet, never even think about whether or not they "trust" Microsoft, the publisher.

Right now, SOE has nothing to offer me in the way of gaming. I'm not interested in anything they have at the moment. I was disappointed in SWG and EQ2 and didn't play them very long. There are plenty of people who love them... it's just a matter of taste.

Trust may come into the issue if Sony continues to use dodgy practices and embed malacious programs into their software... and if that spills over into their games. (I don't download their music) I wouldn't support a company that does that sort of thing on principle. Unfortunately, the way this world works... I might not have many companies to choose from one of these days!

one of the problems with SOE is they dont talk directly to their community, they depend on self hired community managers for forums etc

It has spilled over into SWG (and other games) since they released

Interesting, because i told myself i wouldnt buy another game from SOE after making the mistake to buy everquest 2 and then get a subscription for it. Their site was so damn confusing, took me like 4 hours to finally sign up, and the game not to mention was 10 cds to install ontop of having errors 2 times at the 8th cd. I wanted to try star wars gallaxies but then i remember that SOE ripped me off big time because when i clicked on "subscription" i didnt think it was going to be an on going one, only for that period of time. So i played everquest 2 for a total of around 4 days then realising it was that bad, i stopped playing it, then got more and more bills from SOE in the mail so that really got me angry image. So i geuss its just my total experiance with that company, or it could have just been stupidity or just bad luck, but i still wont buy games from them because there is a hella of a lot more and better games out there by smaller companies. I geuss some people think that SOE is so good because they are so big, well check out some games like Roma-Victor, and Twilight War, small companies but i have a good feeling their games will hit the top.

Though i wont buy anything SOE, i have to say thier doing more for thier community then EA has. You should see how bad thier BF2 forums are.

But i swear thier both in bed together.

Short answer, absolutely not in a million years. Long Answer. After going through dozens and dozens of lies, miss directions and pure and simple BS with SWG, I learned to treat SOE as they company they are, one that cares only about entertaining me so long as it is profitable to me, the second anything interupts that mantra, the players are basicaly left to the back of the line.

Once I admited this to myself, understood them for what they really are, I was a much happier person and gamer. If I play one of their games (I had my spat with EQ2 some time after I left SWG) I never ever ever recommend them in any way at all, good, bad or ugly, I don't care. I just don't give them any personal advertising in shape way or manner. I also do not hesitate to cancel for any reason at all, for months after SWG beta I stayed on and played and pushed that game and helped them in any way I could, I was repaid with what can only be described as vindictiveness on the part of the dev team. So after that my theory has always been that if SOE shows me little to no loyalty, I show them even less.

Anyway you look at it, SOE has a horrible PR image, well at least from my admitedly biased view point.

Surely not. Mythic seems to be one of the more honest companies out there.

Well you know, I do my best to be clever around you crazy boys ;). And unfortunately a good deal of my family lived in New Orleans, I had to take a leave from school to go help the fam fam out :) but everyone is safe and happy now and I'm back home working my butt off to catch up on time lost. And well of course adding my wonderful air of civility and cleverness back in the mmorpg.com forums image

    Miss me ?
