The Greatest Videogames of All Time

Alright, in order these are the videogames I thought were truly the greatest, top 10 videogames to date. I know some of these had sequels with better graphics, better physics and such, but these are the games that truly turned heads and made people gape in awe, whereas the sequals may have attracted more but probably didnt grab the attention since they were just better versions, not the innovative core.

1. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time- If everyone made a list of their favorite games, this would probably be on most of them. This game was so great for when it came out. The graphics were superb, the controls couldn't have been done better or easier. There were no shortcomings in this game, the storyline was wonderful and the boss fights were incredible. The puzzles were perfect for all ages. Easily my favorite game of all time.

2. StarCraft & StarCraft Brood Wars- When I look back on what I did in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade, I look at this game. Me and my friends would start 3 way calls and play StarCraft until 2 am. The campaign editor was wonderful, you could truly use your imagination with plots, skills, making it from an RTS into an RPG, or whatever you want to make. The RTS part of this game was great too, especially online. My friends and I used to join those 7v1 comp stomps, which was when 7 newbies would fight one computer to get their rank up. Only that we would backstab all the newbies and kill them and only my friends and I would get the rank for killing a computer and 4 newbs :D
Wow, this game was wonderful. The campaign was good too, the storyline was excellent and Brood Wars only added to this game to make it better. Also, this game mainstreamed strategy to casual gamers. Command and Conquer was dominating the genre, but it never dominated it like StarCraft did when StarCraft was released.

3. World of Warcraft- Alot of people don't understand this game. They think its a dumbed down Everquest, or the MMORPG for stupid people. Well, simple controls doesnt make it a bad game, especially when the controls are simple AND you can still do all the things you can do in other MMORPGs. Anyone who thinks that a simplified game is for stupid people and therefor bashes World of Warcraft probably isn't very smart anyways if they can only show their intellect through gaming. Also, the point of World of Warcraft (or how I percieved it) is that you are supposed to play it like a strategy game, but from a 3rd person view. It's like Warcraft 3, only that you are the hero unit that you build. You have armor, skills and everytihng that a hero like the Far Seer would have, only that your more in-depth. When I quit Ultima Online, I stopped online gaming for awhile, unable to find something that had the essence of Ultima Online. Well, World of Warcraft doesnt have the "essence" but it's got something even better. It's cartoony graphics keep the Warcraft style but still are very detailed, sharp, and colorful.

4. Metal Gear Solid- I had never even heard of the "stealth" genre when this came out for PlayStation. My friend had told me about this game and he wanted it for Christmas, so I asked my parents for it too. Well, they werent impressed with the language, violence and the sexual content that ESRB had put on the back label, but they got it for me anyways. I haven't missed out on a single Metal Gear Solid title since then. This game truly revolutionized stealth, and even though Splinter Cell is hitting big, the simplicity of Metal Gear Solid and easily adaptable controls make it so much better. Also, though stealth is required, the action is much better and it isn't as hardcore as Splinter Cell. The storyline is great, especially the bosses such as psycho mantis. Which brings up another point- the creativity in this game is wonderful, there are mutants, government fruads, and plot twists throughout the whole game.

5. Perfect Dark- a whole arsenal of different weapons, there were probably like 50 different guns or more :O. Plus, each weapon had two modes, some of them were crazy! A sniper rifle that could shoot through walls, some guns would be machine guns until you put then in their second mode and they would sit on the ground like a turret and shoot enemies while you went off to kill people in another part of the map. Also, if you didnt have any friends you could program a whole bunch of computers and choose their difficulties. You could customize your own multiplayer character too :D An excellent shooter, probably the greatest of all time.

6. Neverwinter Nights- This game didnt get half the credit it deserved. It only appealed to hardcore gamers it seemed. This game had a map editor better than I've ever seen in any game. You could customize armor with it in ways you couldnt even imagine. Also, this was good if you wanted to create your own MMORPG, RPG or have maps like World of Warcraft Battlegrounds. What you could do with it was truly incredible, and the number of MMORPGs (or persistant worlds as they are called, since the server maximum is only about 75 :/) is off the wall. These people make cities, quests, dungeons and everything that a modern MMORPG has. Also, classes like a rogue can persuade NPCs to tell them secrets, and you can open up side quests and plot twists through sweet-talking your way through situations (same if you have the "lore" skill). There are numerous ways to customize your character outside of picking just "looks". However, the controls were a little rough if you played a caster or a class like that, which is probably what discouraged mainstream gamers from playing this.

7. Grand Theft Auto 3- The only people who hate this game are either soccer moms or kids trying to feel rebellious by hating mainstream popular games. This game is so fun, even though its singleplayer only, I dont see how you CAN'T like it or think that it wasn't at least a very innovative and great game. This game pushed the limits of how far a game could go, it had sex, drugs, guns, cussing, foul mouthed humor, racial slurs, EVERYTHING that would push the limits. Of course, even more suprising, the main character did all these things! You would rob armored trucks, hold up stores, rob drug lords, kill pimps and pick up hookers. The controls were slick, easy and adaptable. Of course, this game led to a bunch of disputes of people saying there kids learned how to rob cars from Grand Theft Auto (the kids were later diagnosed with extreme brain damage, mental retardation and abuse from their parents image) and then came the army of clones. True Crime: Streets of LA had the audacity to make fun of Rockstar Games in True Crime, even though they completely ripped off Grand Theft Auto AND everyone hated True Crime anyways. The series gets better and better with every game, with poppable tires, better police chases and larger areas to explore with more guns and purchaseable property.

8. Final Fantasy 7- It probably would go higher on the list if it wasnt for that damn "Click attack" craze that it started image The game itself was great, the storyline and villains were cool and the main character had so many secrets to discover about himself. This game really only had a great storyline though, the many mini-games throughout the whole game were great too. I didn't really like the style of combat where you click attack and watch cloud move and cast spells, especially since you couldnt move around yourself. In fact, I hated this style of gameplay before I played Final Fantasy. If it wasnt for the good plot, it would probably have been crap like the other games before it. The mix between futuristic and magic was great. I was really impressed with this game. I think 9 was a little better with storyline and scenery but I mean this was the RPG that started the RPG craze. Also, very few RPGs hit mainstream like this did.

9. Diablo 2- Why doesnt Diablo 1 belong here? Because Diablo 2 was sooo different, it was almost a completely different game. Though it kept the traditional "overhead" view, even Diablo 1 wasnt as gory as Diablo 2 and you didnt have 5 hundred area effect spells. I LOVED how you could run out in front of 500 of those little creepy goblin guys and right click, casting some area effect spell and slaughtering a miniature army of freaks, blood spraying everywhere. The controls were easy and it was very fast paced, alot of people dont even call it an RPG (even though its considered a "hack and slash" RPG). The fast-paceness in this gave such a rush and it was great teleporting around slaughtering hundreds of guys at once. The plot was decent, it wasnt THAT great and the online play was good until you realized how repetetive it was, but it was nice because you could buy armor for your character and duel other people in 8 person games. I didnt catch on to this like other people did, I played it, I beat it, I played online a little bit but I never got "addicted". I still think this game is a must and thus I put it on this list. Very few RPGs were like this at the time and very few today have grabbed the attention that Diablo 2 did.

10. The Sims 2- The repetition in the Sims 1 didnt deserve to get the attention the Sims 2 got. You could have kids that would that would take on minute traits from their parents, down to how big their cheekbones would get. There is so much AI programmed into every character it is incredible. Also, the customization is incredible, and you can download hundreds more mods for it than you could for the original Sims. The expansion packs make the game 10x better than they did for Sims 1 and there is a load of plot twists, drama and love all that your characters will experience throughout their life. Also, they have aspirations, which if you fulfill they will grow up without problems. Problem children grow up angry, knocking over trash cans and yelling at old people. Wonderful game.

Well that's my list of top 10 games of all time. That's just my opinion though, cause I truly sensed innovation in these games.

Ahh and to clarify what is up with the long posts, it's because I am sitting at my parent's office on a crappy laptop with no games because I am switching schools and none of my friends are home :(

Street Fighter II:  I wish I had all the quarters i dumped into this machine.  Probably buy a new car.

A person's top 10 greatest video games would obviously be opinionated.

    I'll list my top 5:

    1. Zelda: A Link to the Past - Played it non-stop for a summer and loved every second of it.

    2. TES: Morrowind - Played it 9 months straight and loved every second of it.

    3. SWG - My first MMO. Probably the nostalgia that makes me have such fond memories...but I loved the ease of roleplaying in it, and I made some really good friends.

    4. Counter Strike (pre CZ and Source) - Been playing it almost everyday for 5 years. It never gets old image

    5. Starcraft - Been playing it almost everyday for 5 years, too.

Sorry if my opinion on the top 5 games of all time is opinionated Riki.

Look At the first paragraph. The statement should have been in the first paragraph. I don't know you might have edited somthing in. I have no clue, but it's no big deal. I might have been talking about the Topic title...

In no particular order. All great games...

    1) Metal Gear Solid (everyone of them is great. I played the first one through about 5 times, excluding times i would play just to mess around with stuff.)

    2) FF7 and FF9. 8 was good too, 10 was pretty bad (except the sphere grid, that was awsome!)

    3) Diablo 1 & 2 (mainly 2)

    4) Halflife 2 (The first was great too but HL2 was simply amazing.)

    5) Black and White - Too bad B&W2 is complete trash

    6) Counterstrike

    7) Grand theft auto - I cant even tell you how long I played Vice City. I think VC is the best one so far, at least in terms of story.

    8) Starcraft

    9) Warcraft 2 & 3 (Again, the original was great; first RTS i ever played, but the sequels really set themselves apart from most other RTSs out there)

    10) Ultima Online. The only MMORPG thats ever had me screaming at my computer (when we had dialup) and shouting for joy. Best. MMORPG. Ever. (Until about 4 years ago)

Other favorites.... Thief 3, Morrowind, Chronicles of Riddick escape from Butcher Bay, Brothers in Arms, Prince of Persia, Beyond Good and Evil, Rome Total War, Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2, System Shock 2, Battlefield 1942, Baldurs gate 2 and Max Payne 1 & 2.

Thank god i was not the only one who thought this image

I litteraly hated everything on that list. I have nothin against the guy but the games he chose were watered down labels and copyrights more than what they were games. When you talk about "the greatest videogames of all time" try not to mention games that have had more sequels than a bad horror movie...image

Ya in my opinion the Sims 2 was terrible. Aside from graphics, the 'big changes' were so subtle and useless. It feels way too much like another Maxis money making scheme. Its way too much like the original to be deemed a sequel and it gets boring extremly fast if you played the first one for even a few dozen or so hours.

I have to grade my own top 10 games by how much fun I had playing them at the time.

    1. Battlefield 1942 - distilled fun

    2. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - pure genius

    3. Thief 2 - sneaksy

    4. Elite - groundbreaking

    5. Morrowind - immersive

    6. Far Cry - beautiful

    7. Baldur's Gate - engrossing

    8. EQ1 - first MMO

    9. X-Wing Alliance - Millenium Falcon!

    10. Tomb Raider 1 - huge knockers

    1. DAoC (untill ToA came out ... that messed it up) (my first MMORPG)

    2. Command and Conquer (The first part, because it was the FIRST game I have EVER played) & C&C II

    3. World of Warcraft (The levels from 1-40 on a new Server where everybody is the same level are just great)

Thats it for now since I think those where the ones I realy enjoyed the most.

How dare you people leave Earthbound off your lists! image

Curse my flaky mind for forgetting Operation Flashpoint!

One of the most underated series of all time. The first truly open and expansive outdoor shooter with the ability to jump and pilot any vehicle you come across and use any weapon you find. An AMAZING game and one that didnt get anything like the credit it deserved for taking shooters out of corridors and into genuine military realism that was still simple enough to be fun to play.
