If SWG subscriber numers were not going down to a critical level recently, there would not have been a need for such a drastic change. SOE HAS been making bad business decision lately and wasted a lot of potential. The dramatic success of WoW shows them what they COULD have accomplished in the last 2.5 years.
Not so. Only SWG is really experiencing some major issues with management, but people like to attribute that to SOE as if all their games were horrible. Looking at the mmogchart.com values, despite being a few months old, it is apparent that SOE's games still have a BIG portion of MMORPG gamers, and even SWG is doing better than most of the other ones. What I'm trying to say is not that SWG is good and without their problems, but rather that despite their issues, they still have a strong subscriber base. I don't think they've reached a low point in their subscriber numbers, they're just realizing that by changing the game around, they can get more subscribers than they've had before. By the way, I don't play SWG anymore, I did back when the CU first came out but quit shortly due to boredom. My stance on the NGE is that it's a much-needed change, but I'm slightly annoyed at how they're basically experimenting a bit too much with the gameplay.
As for WoW, Blizzard created a polished game that appealed to the casual gaming market. Their fans and people who prefer a more casual gameplay all enjoy the game, accounting for the large number of subscribers. There are plenty of dissidents out there though, me being one of them, but overall I acknowledge how good the game is. It's just too casual for me though.
