A Pokemon MMORPG game?

Yea, I know half of the people who respond to this will be flames, but if you stop and think for a moment, it might become reasonable.  Think about it.  The whole genre is practicaly built around the MMO idea.  A whole world that's already in constant competition with itself, with tournaments of many types (Don't ask which ones...I really have no clue.  I just know there have been at least 4-5 different style competitions throughout the anime).

If this game was built correctly, with rare pokemon REALLY being rare, or one of a kind ones actually being one of a kind, etc etc, it could probobly be a success.  A big one too.  But a game that was built around the anime world (instead of the "wonderful" gameboy world, which may seem similar, but its way off) would actually, I think, be kinda fun, and i'm probobly to old to think it would be, lol.

Anyway, flame away, leave real comments, whichever, I'll see them in the morning.  It's 1:00am here, headin to bed.

This idea has been brought up many times on these forums. Its actually rather surprising how many people agree with you, including myself!

A Pokemon MMORPG would be something I would definately try. I loved the gameboy game when I was in middle school, and it would definately be fun to play in a competitive MMORPG setting. Each player starts out choosing a starter pokemon, and progresses through the game capturing and training new pokemon. Players can trade and fight with each other to aquire new abilities for their pokemon, and items to help them on their journey. Tournaments could be held so players can compete for rare abilities and items, new pokemon, and badges that offer benefits to a player's pokemon.

As childish as the entire genre is, I've gotta be honest and say a Pokemon MMORPG, if done correctly, would be totally awsome. The combat system would have to change though; classical turn-based RPG combat doesn't translate well into MMORPG gameplay.

The first game (or two, whatever) was badass. That game would be perfect for a MMO. Huge land. Lots of PVP. When you hit the level cap, it's not over. You've got 499 more Pokemon to level up. Not much of an economy, but hell, they can work in a system of 'crafting pokemon'.

Plus, how much fun would it be to finally be the guy that just hangs out by the bridge all day, waiting for people to pass by. Then, when they finally do, yell out, "!" and walk over to them, explain why you're going to fight, and then go at it.

As for guilds: Evil people can by 'Team (whatever)'. And they should have matching jumpsuits. And a theme song. Not sure if those were in the series, but any good game should have those.

Well they didn't seem to have any problems selling a licence to make it into a movie, and a cartoon. I'm sure it'd be just a matter of someone offering enough money and they'd be falling over themselves to cash in on a MMOG aswell.

I think the biggest obstacle any developer would face is getting the more adult MMOG population to even try the game. I mean lets face it, how long would most of you stick out a game if it really was full of 12 year olds. Then again wow does pretty well ( I'm an adict image )

Sure it is good in theory. But I have to agree w/ the guy who said they wouldnt give up to anything but their consoles. YOu said they made cartoons and movies, sure that doesnt decrease their system sales. But if you make a computer game, then their handhelds will take a big blow.

Actually, as stated before it is already beeing done... I think they are doing the models or so atm..

Oh, yea, its going to be a free, non-profitable game, so I think Nintendo can't really keep them from making it.... Right?

Wow, honestly surprised at the comments i'm finding here this morning.  I'll say it though, i'm old enough that most people would laugh if I said the word pokemon out loud in real life, but, I would still try the game, just because of how much I enjoyed the older games when I was younger.

I looked some stuff up online, even the battle system would be able to translate over for PvP pretty easily.

Gym matches (would be against Moderators, would have to be since they need to be on a LOT).  Gather enough of these (between 6-8 I believe, depending on region) to get the right to go into a tournament.  (No elite 4...lol.  Dont know why they bothered putting them in the GBgames, they were in the anime, but had nothing to do with the badges)

Ribbons, PvP that has no actual combat.  The poke's just show off and judges (mods again) just decide who they like the best :P

I'm sure there's more, but...I didn't really want to look THAT deep into it, its to early to stare at a hundred pikachu fansites.  Which is one of the things, which somebody else posted I believe, that scares me if they ever did make this MMO.  Little kids, especialy rabid pokefans, are very, very protective of their pokemon >.> holy heck protective.  The insults would fly.  lol.

Not sure if players should be able to be the evil chars though, since they tend to steal pokemon ^^; Although that would certainly invite your friendly neighborhood griefers into the game.  Steal poke's, sell for cash.

Would probobly have to be one server/shard though, considering how huge the world is.  Starting poke would end up depending what region you chose to start in.

And yes, I've seen that free poke MMO thing that's being set up, but until it's out, I have no clue if it's just some hoax or a real game.  Can't read the website, lol.

Anyway, as before, feel free to post, i'm off for a few hours, be back later to catch up again.

Since the first pokemon games were out, people were wondering how cool it would be if pokemon were for real. Nothing odd about it, as the thrill you get after beating your friend is couple times stronger than that of beating AI. At that time i was making a RPG that never came out, due to HDD failure. I thought that making a Pokemon-based RPG would be cool, but having lost all my data I fell into programmers coma. Couple months later I've returned to that dream. But, knowing the taste of defeat, I decided to choose different path - I've decided to write my game with help from other people, as I knew that there are many pokemon fans out there that are eager to participate in such project. And so, this website was born.

Not official, but it might be cool for when you're in between games.

You know if they make the game worthwhile i'd try it out as for the graphics they need to update a little bit let's hope that they make the game enjoyable.

And i do agree with the dude who started this post this game would be a killer imaging if pokemon were really real >.>

I haven't met a single person who said they wouldn't want one if they were real. The only thing that bugs me is the name Pokemon lol they could of thought about something different.

theyre making them cell shaded on purpose...

and I created one a few years back in Blitz... it was 2D like the original gameboy game... I just stopped hosting it after a while, because no one was old enough to make donations, and the server costs were killing me ::::31::

Good idea - But still wont work

Look at the age group that plays pokemon? The game would just be filled with 8 yr olds arguing over whos better and cursing at eachother. Maybe if you had a more mature game with the same Idea of catching monsters and battling with them, thats not called Pokemon it would work.

When I look in the newspaper and read "43 Year old man commits suicide after his Pokemon was stolen" I know its a good time to move into my far away cave.

The game boy game was already MMO style if you think about it.
There were random trainers that would duel you if you ran into them, etc etc. Ever since elementary school I've thought of the ultimate pokemon game, but Its never been made.. and you think they would since the gameboy game was such a success, the first of its kind... but a pokemon MMO would get boring after a while. I would rather there be a digimon online then a pokemon online because if I remember correctly, in digimon each guy just had 1, if there was a pokemon online you would have to grind 6 pokemon instead of grinding 1.

Your mention of a more mature gaming setup...maybe Monster Rancher?  While still kiddish, it was definately pointed more at teens then children, although that may still be a bit young.  Maybe a whole new franchise would be needed to point at adults?

It would be a good idea for a Pokemon mmorpg if it was done correctly. The problem would be the community though. I can guarantee you that all the 10 year old kiddies will come rushing to the game to be "POKEMON MASTER!"

  • ciidciid Member UncommonPosts: 184
Even "if" nintendo came up with a mmo version for revolution no parent in there right mind would let there child sit there interact with a potential sea of child predators. This will cause the game to fail out right thank god.And ill quote FEAR here and say those guys making the nock off pc version can prepare there selfs for the royal A!@# F#@$ of the century cause i cant think theres anywere on this planet were pokemon isnt a registered trademark.image
  • BissrokBissrok Member Posts: 1,002

Too bad they marketed Pokemon for children. The original games were pretty good games. It wasn't trying hard to be cute. Just get giant rock monsters and a fire lizard and fight a bunch of people.

It's not like the series is making that much money nowdays. Just sell the license, get some realistic graphics and put out a MMO for the PC.... Ah, that'd never happen. But someone should at least make something similar to it. Same idea, but for people who can pay $15 a month (without convincing mom first). Like some big f**kin' demons instead of yellow rats.
