Eve is only going to get people who would like its kind of hardcore sci-fi players rating it for the most part, unlike a super stream-lined game like WoW that will have millions of players of which there will be a lot more players rating it lower.
That's just how I see it anyhow.

Good points all. We also have to bear in mind that people who enjoy EVE will tend to be, how do I put this kindly ... considerably more inclined to literacy ... then those who enjoy a basic Swords and Sorcery style fantasy such as WoW.
Literate people are apt to read more, and write more, or even know that anything else exists on the Internet besides the game they play and pirate .mp3 files.
So naturally, a cerebral game like EVE will attract more responses overall, and being the only example of a truly cerebral game will have a much higher level of appreciation by those who play it.
Well...at least the insults are becoming slightly more veiled now. Just because I read books, have had many years of schooling, and possess a larger vocabulary than most DOES NOT mean I like boring, dry, games; generalisation is a terrible thing.
Permit me the luxury of a generalisation now... the term "arrogant EVE-player" is fast becoming a tautology on this site!
Originally posted by Supernerd Eve is a good game but i dont think a number 1 rank truly represents what most think here at this site well at least i hope not or ive lost all respect for this site I not saying love or hate eve i think 4 sure it aint number one out of all mmorpgs
it's really bothering me and making me sick to see eve number 1 rank and i rarely hit this site n e more
so come on members git wit it pls kthxbye
Look, most people don't have 6-12 hours a day to play a mmog, and actually be good at it. Because that is what it takes, if you want to be good you simply have to play alot, and if I can't be good at it(I don't have the time) I don't want to play.
You can play EVE while afk, or while doing something else, and it is perfect for those that actually have life.
im new this site but eve online.. lol... Sorry, but rank 1? LOL... I even like maple story better than that game.. I played it for like 2 weeks and i got really bored of it and every day i tried to like it but it didn't work for me, i just wanna bang my head on the computer when watching my self play the dammm game by own keyboard and mouse and my friend said it was a good game but i tried to like it but i rather kill my self than play the game.. I rather play Pokemon than eve online.. Sorry, im not an eve online fan but I can't believe it made it to no.1 spot on high ratings.. im like OMG.. I hate that game sooo much ! This is really frustrating to know its rank 1

Hate on EVE all you want, but the fact of the matter is it's ranked #1, not your favorite game. If you can't accept reality then you have a whole list of other things you should be doing instead of whining about EVE Online.

hey, guess what? i read books all the time, usually i'll read a whole book a week. i'm very literate, smart, etc. i'm a network admin for a medium sized company. but you know what? i don't like eve because i like to have fun in games. thats what they are there for.
so by literate, do you mean people who read books while playing eve? because to me, that is not playing the game. how can you enjoy a game when you are watching tv or reading a book or doing something else, other than playing the game?
there are two games. eve and the rest, which are eq clones. this is why eve is #1. it represents half the mmorpg gamers while the rest get divided between similar games.
Originally posted by huxflux2004 there are two games. eve and the rest, which are eq clones. this is why eve is #1. it represents half the mmorpg gamers while the rest get divided between similar games.
lol
and you wonder why people are unhappy with eve players...just stop it your elitist attitude now.
i hardly doubt half the mmorpg community likes eve. 4 million people playing wow, 70,000 playing eve - someone's math is off somehere
EVE Online is #1 because it's different than most of the schlock that's out there now, the developers work with the community, there is PvP and PvE (your choice), and there is no grinding. Sure they used some ideas from other games that came before it, but they ened up creating a unique MMO that is enjoyable to play that doesn't require hours of sitting at the keyboard grinding this or that to get up to skill levels.
Guild Wars has some nice graphics, but it's not technically an MMO, it's basically a bunch of instances, and the PvP is contrived. All the instancing really detracts from the immersiveness of the game.
WoW is a very nice game. Nothing new here though, they just took the ideas that were already out there from previous MMO's and improved on them, fixing alot of the the things that were wrong with it's predecessors. I have an account and play it from time to time, but sheesh, I'm so tired of Elves and Dwarves, fighers, casters, healers, etc. , this genre has been done to death.
COH/COV - didn't play this game, it was a somewhat new idea (which I think is partially why it gets high marks), but running around in tights as a comic book hero wasn't really it for me, and the lack of PvP in COH turned me off to the whole concept from the start.
DAOC - Tried out the trial on this one, but it looked and felt so much like EQ1 I didn't stay past the trial. The graphics were dated and gameplay was just more of the same. I'm thinking this one is still near the top of the list because of all the people that haven't upgraded their video cards to something that will play the newer stuff.
EQ2 - Haven't played this one either, but, no PvP, and the fact that it's owned by SOE turned me off to this one. I've played Planetside, EQ, EQOA, SWG and Matrix-Online. All SOE owned games, and in every one of them, developers were not tuned in to the community, bugs took forever to get fixed (if they got fixed at all), and any additional content was not provided as part of your monthly fee, but rather sold to you as an expansion pack that you had to pay for on top of what you already paid. Sorry to rant, but these guys are in the business of buying ideas, bleeding them of every drop of cash they can get, then throwing them in the dumper. I just don't see why people continue to give SOE their money.
I'll tell you 2 things that EVE has that most other MMO's don't have.
1. PvP anywhere (with guards in the high security areas to protect the noobs) 2. Corpse Looting, you kill somebody, you take their stuff.
It's like Ultima Online was back in the day, if you wandered outside of the protected area of town, you were fair game to anyone that wanted to kill you and take your stuff by looting your corpse.
It added a real element of danger to the game and made it fun to play. All the new stuff that's out now is so heavily weighted to the care bear that there are no penalties for dying, it's just a constant zerg, of respawn, attack, respawn attack, your gear takes a little hit maybe, or maybe you even have to do a corpse run, but that's it.

Hardly elitist...if you'd bothered to put a little thought into his comment you might actually see the potential merits of his opinion.
Let's take a look at the highest ranked MMORPGs on this site: 1. EVE 2. Guild Wars 3. City of Villians 4. WoW 5. City of Heros 6. Dark Age of Camelot 7. Everquest II
Of these seven MMOs, six of them are design off-shoots of the orginal EQ. Guild Wars having the greatest design deviation from EQ.
EVE is the only one on that list to shows a clear design derivation from UO.
it represents half the mmorpg gamers while the rest get divided between similar games
This comment makes no sense. If this implies the entire MMO market population then it is incorrect since it is quite clear that EVE is in the minority.

It is SO elitist. i don't care how he words it, he is touting eve as the greatest end all, be all game out there. i played Eve back on my 486 when it was called Privateer. I never played it but another game just like it is Elite. All Eve did was make it online and use better graphics.
"there are 2 games, eve and the rest"
while they have similar features to EQ, they aren't all the same game. anyone with half a brain can see that.
I don't see a clear design derivation from EQ in EVE. Create a character, go fight pirates (PVE), mine (crafting), fight other players (PVP) - everything every other mmorpg has. Its just EQ in space. The only thing different is that all the other games are 10 times more fun than EVE.

since WoW has the highest number of subscribers of any mmorpg, that was the perfect example to use. makes sense to use 4 million compared to 70,000 when trying to make a point about community size, is it not?
ok lets use guidl wars then. they have over a million people subscribed. eve still only has 70,000. still not even close.

Who exactly is "you guys"? Eve isn't my favorite game, FFXI is. Eve has its flaws just like every other game. Why do you feel the need to sit here and refresh this post 24/7 waiting to counter anything positive anyone says about eve? I might respect your opinion if you had actually played the game more than the 2 week trial, if you even finished that much. Maybe if people like you would stop challenging every post about eve, the fans of the game wouldn't have to be so defensive.
I played WoW since beta3 and stopped playing 2months ago, played GW for about a week, played CoH and a bit of the CoV stress test weekend and have been playing EVE for the last 2months or so...
I gotta say, EVE has an amazingly well-thought out and almost entirely player driven economy. It's also very complex--easy enough once you get settled, but it's not a game you jump into and start blasting other players. IMO, since the learning curve is steeper than most, it's a natural filter of the "OMGWTFBBQsauzeROFLCOPTER!!11oneone" type preteens that seem to be so prevalent in other mmo's these days...
While the macro/bot types seem to be in EVE, it's not as disruptive to the economy it seems like.
17,000 concurrent users on the same server, at the same time lend *alot* to being part of a populous and immersive world--that is probably at least double what the peak cuncurrent user load ever was on my WoW server and when it gets that crowded in WoW, it feels claustrophobic, not populated.

Well I do have that 50 year old set of golf clubs my next door neighbour gave me.
How much do they sell for on Ebay?
Totally off-topic, but where do your other neighbours live? :P

they make up generalizations and lies about everything but their game
