I do not understand why people are ignoring simple facts just to prove their point. World of Warcraft is the most popular MMORPG worldwide now. Other very popular (with over 2.000.000 subscribers) games are extremely region limited. Even most popular titles in the past (UO, EQ) never had so big player base.
I dont know how game could possibly be too popular? Diablo had over 9.000.000 online players. Was it too popular? Popularity -> money -> better future games. Popularity always fades, so after a few months, years we will demand something new. And probably WoW will someday be gone.
But as for now, against many who write here:
1. WoW is every week in top 10 selling games in US since day of release.
2. Players leave WoW, im sure, but more is coming because Blizzard puts more and more new servers.
3. Most of the servers are full (queued) or medium even in the days during week, not counting Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
