About to get EQ!

Well, I had my options of getting either EQ or DAoC. My friend doesn't have an account on either of them anymore and I talked my parents into the monthly payment(since im getting a job soon). I never was able to play MMORPG's because of my parents, and I hear about all the good times people had in EQ a few years ago. And my friend was telling me how EQ was alot better than DAoC(he played both for a while), I had heard EQ wasn't very newbie friendly so I was leaning towards DAoC plus its newer with better graphics. But then he was telling me how that was a lie since the first time he logged onto EQ people were giving him equipment and items. Anyways, he owns 4 of the 6 expansions over $60 worth of gaming and I get it free lol. I may by the later 2 if I like EQ, but mainly I wanted to know how many people still played EQ? I heard its still the second largest MMORPG on the PC, is this true? How many people are usually online at a time?

I wouldnt worry about the number of people that still play. There are still thousands and thousands of people who play. Theres a number of servers, some have PvP (player vs. player)...most dont, which is probably easier for a n00b. Probably the most populated area though is still bazaar, although most of the people in the zone are afk (away from keyboard). Once you download it, your welcome to join the karana sever and I would be happy to show ya around and help you.

I heard its still the second largest MMORPG on the PC, is this true? True, or at least one of the largest ever...

if its free then go ahead, its good to get you introduced into the mmorpg area. but i suggest that you get eq2 once it comes out, as it is supposed to be better, and its nice to start new a fresh instead of 4 years behind. plus, eq's (first one) end game isnt as good as its told to be, those who like it have good computer/connection...havea  guild, and have a lvl 65 char alrdy.

Yeah, I really miss EQ.  Made the decision to wait for EQII tho, chant wait for the better graphics and to start into a game at the beginning instead of when I did, about three years behind!!!

Well, he forgot to bring the game again(sigh).. but he is bringing it tommorow, or I'm going to his house lol. Anyways, I am getting it free so I will probably sign up on EQ till EQ2 comes out and I can afford it. Someone told me today that EQ use to be free per month, and has gradually rose to what it is now.. which sucks, but oh well. If EQ 2 costs anymore per month(over $13), or any MMORPG, I wont support them. That's to steep, I understand server costs, they are making a hefty profit with 12.95 a month if you think about it. Anyways, hope to be on by this weekend and nice to see you guys being n00b friendly. I heard from a few ppl that EQ isn't very noob friendly anymore since its so old, but of late it doesn't seem like it especially since one of my old friends dads still play and is willing to also help get me started.

Its user friendly, in my opinion. It wont talk ya that long to get used to the game, once you get the hang of it, it'll get better and better as you level.

I played EQ when it first came out, then took a break, then switched to DAoC, then took another break. And now I'm back to EQ(where a couple friends of mine have been the whole time).

However... I believe that graphics-wise DAoC(before even their most recent graphics upgrade) looked better than EQ. Furthermore, the graphics are good world-wide in DAoC. In EQ they only get better as you move into the newer expansions.

Kaladim(the dwarven capital), for example, is just as crappy looking as it was when the game first sold. That was a real let-down.

I like both games, but most likely will be checking out newer games that are hitting around the new year.

I will probably get WoW or Horizons when they come out, but since I am getting a $60 free game here I think I will at least play it till those come out.. that will also get me used to mmorpg's.

lol u guys r just jealous that there are so many better mmorpgs meheheheheh SOE's games suck.. planetside and star wars galaxies were thier worst ideas eq is a 6.0 to me if they improved service and fixed up npcs and made it so when ur o n a hill a monster cant hit u from 20 feet below u and they need to and if they didnt shut the servers down for so long and if they improved sound graphics gameplay and especially THE PVP! well heres something you should know! If you want i can give you a huge post probally 20 lines about this ****ing  game

   Let's keep things civil in here guys. I can understand if some of you don't like Everquest, and you're free to post your opinion, but please don't start insulting each other. This isn't the place for it . I don't want to have to lock the thread because it's getting way to far off topic.

   On a lighter note, I hope that you enjoy Everquest. If you are getting it for free, why not try it? I played Everquest for 3 1/2 years and was quite satisfied by my experiences. I've hence moved on to Final Fantasy XI to try something new, and am very pleased with that as well. If you have any questions about Everquest, feel free to ask around on the forums. It seems that Murt knows a lot about Everquest so I'm sure he'd be willing to give some input about various Everquest aspects.
