I've been bored lately, and was thinking about firing up GW again, starting with a new character. I was thinking about doing something different, though--not adding a secondary class.
However, you never see anyone doing this (I don't anyhow). Is that a good sign that it is a gimped strategy? Is it pretty much a given that you need to have a secondary class to be decent?

You can make a pvp-character with no secondary class. RP-characters must choose a second class to leave "newbie world".
If you have only one class its easier to know what skills you are going to use (therefore easier to counter), also there are skills that are usefull even if you dont spend points in secondary class attributes.
(Edit: Was changed in a patch so you must have secondary class to enter academy).
im not sure this is true , i will check it
second profession means , more skills !!! its not something you dont want ....
if you didnt get out of presearing , you didnt play the game.
pre searing is startup tuturial.

I've played well past pre-searing Ascalon. What I meant is I've only played through the beginning part once, seeing as how I've only ever made one character (I didn't really get into the game the first time I tried it).
The whole reason I even brought this up is because I was looking at a faq on Gamefaqs.com, and the person had strategies for playing through the campaign without taking a secondary class--therefore, I assumed it was possible. I was only asking how viable a choice like that was.
to rp character need two (hybrid) class.
strange
I will never understand what the big deal is about NOT wanting to have two classes available on the same character. You are NOT forced to use a skill from both classes. I made a Ranger/Elementalist as my first character, then I changed its secondary to Mesmer after I beat the game and did the class change missions. Now I have zero mesmer skills on my skill bar....I use all ranger skills. Same thing with my PvP Mesmer...all mes skills. So even though you have two class options available, you do not have to use both. By having people take two classes, it also helps them unlock skills at a faster rate. If people only took one class at a time and there are only 4 character slots, you could see how more complaints would arise. Even if you dont go out of your way to collect secondary class skills, you will still end up unlocking a majority of them.
Good Luck have fun...

You are not forced to put your attributes in any specific place. Nothing says you have to put attribute points in all sections...in fact in is necessary not to do that and spread your skills too thin. Which leads to more strategy in deciding your build. I will give you and example of a mesmer I am playing right now with runes:
Mesmer / Necro
Attibute Points:
Fast Casting 11
Domination 11
Illusion 15
Inspiration 6
Blood 0
Curses 0
Death 0
I have put zero into my necro skills.... I am still allowed to play. So again having a secondary class means absolutely nothing besides you have the ability to unlock skills for it and have the opportunity to put attribute points into it, if you so choose.
So please people, stop worry about a secondary class .....
