Originally posted by Cleffy I really am not a fanboy for Worlds of Warcraft, but I believe that the original posters preminition of 10 million on WoW in a year is pretty accurate. It has right now 5 million active subscriptions. When the new update comes we might see an influx of players returning to WoW; especially with the implementation of things the players wanted from early on; like un-capped servers, linked Auction Houses, a hot horde race, battlegrounds, and being able to hit level 75. I would have to say that WoW's popularity in the States in particular will make other mmo developers to shift thier gameplay mechanics; like how players dont like level grinds yet most mmo's implement them.
You got to be kidding, just because an expansion comes out for WoW it will get an additional 5 million players?! I dare to say 5 million people didn't quit WoW.
Only way Blizzard will add more numbers on is by going to other countries with thier monster marketing machine and importing new servers there.
How many subscriptions do they have in North America compared to the rest of the world.
They have the most NA subscribers of any MMORPG ever before. NA aren't as big on MMORPG's as compared to Asia.
Originally posted by Torak Where on earth did you come up with WoW 10 million subscribers? Worldwide it is L2 which has the higher of the 2 games although I think the margin is closing.
in june 2005, according to mmogchart.com lineage 2 and wow were almost tied at about 3 million subscribers if i remember correctly.
mmogchart hasn't been updated since then but i bet wow has surpassed lineage 2.
My favorite MMORPG was Asheron's Call. You leveled up but you got to spend the skill points on whatever you wanted...running, jumping, clothes dying, strength, whatever. It was really cool.
If you liked AC, you may want to check out Ultima Online. What you described is what is called "skill based" game. UO was the first to have it. AC the 2nd. Very few skill based mmorpgs are made. AO is somewhat skill based. SWG is very skill based. Also check out the much newer mmorpg Star Wars Galaxies. Anarchy Online gets special mention.
I was not financially independant back then so I eventually got bad grades and was forced to quit. I played WoW for about 3 weeks...got to level 30...and decided it wasn't really much different from the free mmorpgs.
WoW is what is called "level based" game. EQ is the most famous level based game. DAoC is also level based.
It was Blizzard's name that got the fanbase.
True. But nothing wrong with that. Blizzard's main target was their own fans.
WoW isnt the next Everquest so I don't think it'll keep gaining players.
WoW does not need to be the next EQ. WoW is targeting their own fanbase. Which existed before EQ came out. And the majority of which never ever played EQ in the first place. Right now both EQ and WoW are successes and hits.
Here are two of my questions...Does Asheron's Call still have tons of players? And what are the reasons that Everquest was so popular? I'm gonna start paying to play so I wanna decide on an MMORPG that has longevity, roleplaying, a good community, and a lot of features.
AC does not have the same number of players as it used to. It has long ago re-couped its developement costs. AC right now has roughly 30k-50k players. AC really is a NICE game. Unfortunatly Turbine still does a poor job trying to market it. They go all out to market the failure AC2, but do nothing for AC. AC has had only 1 free trial years ago. It lasted for... 1 month! AC2 had a non-stop free trial offer for more than a year.
Sadly, AC might go down, because its profits were used to keep AC2 on life support. And as collateral for loans to make 2 more new mmorpgs... at the same time!
I suggest you stick with AC since you already like it. AC is skill based. EQ is level based. Both games have tons of content, and sizeable game worlds.... though IMHO EQ has a bigger game world. EQ succeeded because it was released right before AC. "Early bird gets the worm". "First impressions are everything." EQ was the early bird. EQ made the first impressions for the new generation mmorpg after UO got old. The first mmorpg with 3-D, and much, much, more. AC has forever been in the shadow of EQ. A NICE article was written about this years ago in CGM. It has AC2 on the cover, but talks about all mmorpgs.

It could easily double the number of people playing mmorpgs.
