Blizzard has announced open battlegrounds that aren't instanced coming soon (probably with the expansion).

I don't know what this means, but it might catch your attention.

Am surprised no one has mentioned Shadowbane, old style or its Loreplay server.  That game is very PvP geared.

Sorrowwho. The changes you talk about are already in C3 afaik. Non red PvP never made you drop stuff aside of some bugs in open beta and c1. Dieing when you are red still can make you drop everything. The more karma you gain the higher the chance.

As for helping starters: Yes. But: only on the first 18 levels which can be done in a day or two and only for the first toon ever created on a fresh made account. So not really a big help but more of a marketing gag from NcSoft.

i tried most of the main mmorpgs but the best pvp and most realistic one you have in Battleground Europe for sure...always action when u want for 24hrs, its really hardcore pvp and no game can compete in my opinion if ya like real pvp

dark age of camelot has nice pvp and one of the best in fantasy pvp but the lack of players on european servers didnt hold me, in addition that most of the players level 50+

neocron is another interesting pvp mmorpg but has very small playerbase, you dont have 24 hrs action with pvp and 200 ppl on such a server is just very tiny.

planetside is quiete cool but after i while i got bored cause u cant win in this game

I've been too busy getting my ass handed to me in Mario Kart DS to bother with any MMOs lately.

However, I'd have to suggest GW since it's PvP is a little closer to the original spirit of online gaming (deathmatch and CTF games of 16 players or less). For some reason, when you go above the 64 player mark, everything feels totally random. GW is a very traditional PvP experience that has a strong focus on teamwork and planning. With other MMOs, it's all about higher levels, better equipment, and buffs. Excuse me while I yawn in anticipation.

If you're interested in pvp, then I would heartily recommend EVE Online.

It is the only game I have ever played which has left me dripping with sweat and physically shaking after my first bout of pvp. There's good depth to the fighting and the fact that you actually stand to lose something (though not necessarily much if you are sensible) gives meaning to the fighting which is often lacking in other games.

Although some people might tell you that you need years worth of skills, experience and money to enjoy the pvp in EVE, this is really not true.

Without too much effort you can get involved in pvp within less than a week of starting, and if you can find a decent corp to fly with then you can quickly become very effective and take down people who have been playing far longer than you, hopefully having a lot of fun in the process.

    Regarding Guild Wars:

The PvP in Guild Wars is shockingly well balanced. There is no unbeatable class or skill combo. Also, there is no way to grind your way to dominance over people lower level than you. The level cap is low and the best items are easily available to everyone. These elements are awesome, because if all you want to do is PvP, why should you have to spend months grinding boring quests/pve in order to take part in the only aspect of the game you are interested in?

On the flip side, there is a fair amount of grind in Guildwars, because you need to unlock enough skills on your account to be able to compete in high level PvP. Anyone can jump into the 4v4 arenas and pvp from day 1 (using premade lvl 20 characters), but to participate in the real pvp game you need to be able to make whatever character your guild/team needs you to make. Unfortunately, it can take a long time to get your account sufficiently unlocked to the point where you can enjoy the meat of the pvp game, and you more or less have to slog through the pve game to do it.

That said, if you dedicated yourself to playing one particular role in GW, you could probably get enough skills unlocked for that one role to jump into high end PvP in a couple of weeks, less if you are hardcore. Once you get into 8v8 competition, you can slowly but surely unlock your account.

In the end, it's a shame about the skill unlock grind in GW. Were it not for this one problem, GW would be the best PvP rpg out there imo.

Mind you, I don't consider killing lower level, defenseless players or mass zerging PvP. The thing about the 8v8 format of Guildwars is that PvP actually comes down to which team is better rather than which team is higher level, has better gear, or simply has more players. To me, it's not fun, challenging, or rewarding if the other guy isn't on the same playing field as me. Just as it's no fun to be insta killed by some level 500 duder when I'm playing a lvl 1 noob character, it's also boring when you beat someone in pvp who stands no chance against you.

GW stands in stark contrast to a game like L2. When I played L2, it was a serious grind fest and skill had nothing to do with winning in pvp. It was only about who has the best items and the most levels, and those things are a reflection of hours and hours spent grinding rather than player skill. Winning or losing PvP in L2 were both equally unrewarding to me, as the times I won the other guy stood zero chance and the times I lost I stood no chance. Also, the classes were seriously unbalanced, and many classes were pretty much worthless. Iirc I had exactly 1 battle that was closely matched and fun. The other thing I hated about L2 was that you couldn't really make a character that was unique. If you are a human paladin, you have all the exact same skills as every other human paladin. No thanks :P
