Not bad. Eve is awesome in that your actions really have some meaning - the opponent has real losses, you can conquer territory, have an effect on the market, forge meaningful alliances etc. i think one of the main thing that draws in players is eve's great graphics.
They are as stupid as i was, 2k are trial accounts be prepared many people wont play after this 14 day trial advertise and the number will drop to 14-15k max..

Not true Ax... they had popped 16 and 17k already prior to the new trial adverts
EVE has been steadily growing for a long time. While it wan't my cup of tea I just read the latest patch notes that seem to adress many of my most long-term suffering points in the game so I may grab a trial to see how much it fixed and if it's worth another look or not before re-activating.
But your prediction just isn't realistic. With 80k+ players (they're probably up over 100k by now actually) it's not surprising at all to see 17k players online.

I think they breached 18200 PCU this Sunday. Looking back to late June early July, right before the "New World Order" content patch, the PCU at the time was like 12,000. That means the PCU increased by 50% during the 5 months following the last major content patch in July.
Considering the fact that another major expansion is on it's way this month, I think we can expect to see another population surge and the breaching of 20,000 relatively soon.

Mainly because it is popular in many regions of the earth. From Far East Asia and Russia, with most of the player base in Europe, to probably about 30% being in North America. The game's peak is during Europe's gaming peak (9pm or so in the evening)
evenews.com has a server status tracker similar to what EVE-I had.

"At 20:33 on Sunday evening (2005.12.04) EVE players broke their own Peak Concurrent Player (PCU) record with 18.148 playing at the same time." http://www.eve-online.com/
Better revise your number to 15-16k. Plus what does it matter? Even 14-15k players is impressive.
Just because some are trials doesnt mean its any less immpresive (trials still play in the same place as full accounts, not a separate area), and it recently broke the 18K barrier.
