Graphics question?

I see a 9 for graphics in the ratings so I must be doing something wrong.  I loaded the game and started to play.  I got to the create character screen.  But the graphics were unbelievably horrid.  What can I do to improve the graphics.  I have an ATI 9600 series with 256m ram and I have P4 3.2 with 2 gigas. I didnt have an issue with EVE, SWG , Everquest, ...

go into FFXI Configuration and chance the Backround Resolution to 1024 x 1024 , or w./e the highest setting is
