Basically in order to auto-train stealth just don't put any points into the skill. The skill will auto-train on its own without you doing anything, you get 1 skill point per 4 levels you earn. Over the course of 50 levels this amounts to a total of 12 free skill in stealth (for a total of about 77 saved skill point).

My advice:
Level up and do a single-line respec of your stealth skill when you are 50 that way you don't have to suffer without stealth the whole way. When you respec you'll get your auto-trains. (unless it's different for stealth than for bow for archer classes)

If you autotrain stealth and then later respec stealth at all you will loose that autotrain points. It should work that way with everything. What the game does at level 50 is make sure your auto trained skills at at 12. It will deduct them from your available amount of points.

The advantage gained from autotraining is not worth it, at least for nightshades and here is why:
1. Without stealth you will be easily seen in the BG. Hence you will not have any fun there.
2. At level 50 you will start earning realm ranks. These give +1 per level to skills. As such you will eventually want to respec and so those autotrain points are gone anyway.
3. Magical items. 38+12(from items) is the same as training to 50 in stealth.
4. Mastery of Stealth. This allows archers to see you. Archers used to be good prey and now one that is high realm rank can see you so far off and kill you with a bow that it makes playing your nightshade in the front very depressing at times. Do not mean to make assassins seem bad, but just point out that the addition of this has made archers much more powerful and wanted. Assassins spend most of the time hunting other assassins.
So I would say do not waste your time autotraining anything. What tiny advantage you might get is most likely not worth it anyway.
Ahh ok... my info was a bit dated. It worked 2.5 years ago
