How does EVE compare to X3?

justo316justo316 Member Posts: 7

I've got a craving for a space trading/fighting game and it's come down to EVE and X3. I know very little about each except for what I've seen in the EVE trial of which I have played about 2hours worth.

To me they seem very similar except one is single player only and the other multiplayer. Disregarding the single/multi player aspects, what's the go on how these two compare? It's kind of hard to read through all the marketing hype....

How do apples compare to oranges? they both are a fruit, and their marketing both "claim" they provide many essential vitamins. Which one is better? You'll just have to try them both.

X3 is the superior game if you want a single player experience with a good story.

Only play EVE if you relish exploding frequently and occasional getting to return fire in the process (pvp).

I wish X3 had a demo. As it stands, I will have to go off opinions, cos I'm not paying for both games.

I've been playing for alittle over 2 months and I've only blown up once, and that was my own faught. EVE is a game for the more complex player. So unless you can't take a loss once in awhile eve is not for you.

Other then that I haven't played X3 so I dont know much about it, I do know that EVE has an extremely complex trading system. It takes some getting used to but once you do you'll love it. Give it a shot, you can try it free for 14-days. And if you do play it I HIGHLY recommend you go through the ENTIRE tutorial. You'll be lost if you dont. Good Luck.

You shoot and build stuff and you trade. ........ there are planets, stars, space stations........ erm..... let me think.... yeah.. I think that all about the common things, but then I guess you can apply most of that to all space sims.

But X3 sucks anyways. Performance problems, buggy like hell, crappy game design, suckie UI. There is a reason why the game was at version 1.2, about 2 weeks after its release.

Hah! I've been playing EVE for two years. If you aren't getting blown up at least once a week, you aren't really playing to the fullest. Get out of Empire now and avoid regretting it later.

I played Eve in Beta and retail for  over a year and I have played X3 extensively.

My advice would be: X3 has a little more pace than Eve but is essentially a lonely affair with a storyline to play through and like most games, an end point to reach unless you enjoy the trading aspect ad infinitum. It can be a self contained experience, a very good one, but with the usual singleplayer limitations.

Eve is a far bigger open ended dynamic where the game is not about you but your making a place for yourself in a game of thousands of others. The choices are therefore wider, between corporations, factions, roles, etc. The skill system is a revolution to those in the D&D era abd the pvp is strategically amazing.

Graphically there is not much to seperate each game but the whole MMO experience is what makes teh dynamic of Eve far different from X3. If you want a totally non-linear, non storyline driven social experience with ,truly, the best online community I have ever played with - Get Eve. If these factors are not important to you, get X3.

Eve, for those that can cope with its slower pace and more thoughful nature, will become immensly addictive and you have to balance the monthly ongoing fees vs the single payment of X3.

Good luck on what ever choice you make

How so ? x3 is Offline. You pay for it once. After playing it for 2 or 3 months you can afford your Eve subscribtion.

Other than that i do not see the wisdom in comparing a MMORPG with any offline game.

One thing however that is a point for Eve (or any other MMORPG i know) : You will not need a new DVD drive to make the copy protection work.

Actually EVE's graphics are starting to become out dated by games such as X3.

I hardly want to go spend my hard earned cash on X3 if it ends up being rubbish. Whether it's 2 or 3 months worth of EVE is irrelevent. Money wasted is still money wasted.

In regards to comparing the two, I see it as totally relevant. To me, they sound like they have pretty much the same premise....you go fly around trading and fighting to make a name for yourself in a big open ended type 'verse. The main difference being with EVE there are other people to chat to while you are playing.

Inevitably so gieven their respective release dates but my point was that in my opinion, the difference is not one whicj is a deciding factor between the two

    Personally I'd recommend doing this:
Get a trial copy of EVE and play it. If you like it then stick with it. If not then try X3

It's really just that simple... why are you making it so complicated? Odds are if you like EVE you probably won't like X3 as much. And if X3 is your thing you probably won't enjoy EVE very much.

Personally I won't even think about X3 until they have a trial. I don't buy ANY games at their release... I won't buy a game till I've tried it myself. Either by playing a friend's copy or a free trial.

Very true. EVE's graphics were mostly created with Maya, and some of the older models definitely look their age from when they were created two three years ago. Heck, some of them are still unfinished in some details with the polygons/rendering/shading thingummies.

    Maya

CCP has been talking about upgrading their gfx engines in some
areas though we don't have anything real concrete yet.

Some of the current constraints can be seen in the new Capital Ship Classes. [Large image file] Although quite beautiful, they lose resolution when you zoom in compared to other ships.

All the ships that came out in Cold War edition however are far more detailed than the original batch. This includes the battlecruisers and the destroyers class. The new skins on the RMR specialized ship upgrades are all pretty high res I think. Over 30 new ships will be released with the December expansion as far as I know.

To be fair, CCP never really released environments. All you really have are a number of objects: ships, weapon effect objects, gates, stations, planets, moons, asteroids, nebulae, and deadspace objects, plus the moving polygons for turrets and components of newer models floating in literally empty space. Catalysts have a moving radar array for example. If CCP ever decides to go with the development of planet surfaces (they do have a proof of concept vid floating about) then you will see some kind of ground/depth perception effects being hammered into acceptable order.

There was a long discussion about this in early beta. The Devs made a concious decision not to add environments and just go with the 'big empty box with wallpaper' design purely for performance. They didn't want to force video cards to deal with all that crap in a 300+ player battle.

One great thing about EVE is the huge and extensive backstory. There is some great backstory in this game and that is what originally drew me into the game.

Check it out here: Eve Chronicles

    I'm currently playing X3.

The essential differences for me are

    Gamespeed

X3 has faster paced gameplay. While still tragically slow the times spent travelling through an endless series of jumpgates is much less.

    Game Duration.

Eve can go for years. X3 is going to be completed in a few hundred hours.

    Economy.

X3 has a fascinating and complex economy supported by an ever growing armoury of Automative AI. Strictly speaking, X3 has 6 fascinating and complex economies supported by an ever growing armoury of Automative AI.

    Loneliness

Eve has thopusands of players for you to chat and interact with. X3 is singleplayer. It has a lot of RPG elements, but 2 or three repetative sentences with a squeaky voiced alien isn't the same. In both games are there extended periods of dullness, whether you are mining rocks or just steaming your way from side of the universe to the other. It passes the time much better to be in a chatroom.

    Interface.

X3 you are the pilot, you can even spacewalk. You can use a big sexy flight joke and turn down the lights until your nerdlair becomes the cabin of your spaceship. Eve is a third person exterior view and point and click.

    Universe size

    Eve is massive.

    Ease of use

Eve has a tutorial. X3 does not.

X3 has save games. Eve does not. Some bright spark may well destroy your prized possesions in Eve, in X3 when he does you get a second chance.

    Graphics.

Not much in it for my money, this game is all about the backdrops. X3 requires a more powerful video card and processor to run as it's rendered spaceships and stations are more complex as are the AI. X2 was widely used as a benchmark for GFX card performance so if you are the owner of an expensive GFX card you may enjoy the use X3 can make of it.

Eve looks good on any old junker.

    Combat

In X3 your pilot skills can make up for a large difference in ship capabilities. It's action driven in a way Eve's skill system is not.
