I want to continue playing EVE, but...

daeandordaeandor Member UncommonPosts: 2,695

This is not a question from a 14-day EVE newb, or mmorpg newb, or child, or fanboy of another game.  I am having trouble justifying my time in EVE.  While I enjoy the game, I am having trouble seeing the endgame, where everyone says the fun is, ever being within my grasp.  I have a little over 1 million SPs in mostly combat and learning related skills, but I think unless I find a bridge between my current "newbiehood" and "the fun stuff", I am going to have to leave.  But I do not want to.  How did you guys who have played so long first make your jump from being a mission whore / mining whore to actually enjoying some of the player content in the game?

Now, before I see your answers, I am going to say that I feel my next step is a good corp.  But here is the delemna:  None of the "good" corps are taking 1mil SP newbs, at least that I have found.  And the problem I have is that I hate joining a corp just to get enough corp experience to get in a "good" corp.  I hated this concept in every game I have played.  Honestly, I am a 35 y/o dad who knows how to act, has been in and lead many clan/guilds over many years, and likes to be in organizations that are successful and expect hard working participants in their corp.  I do not like being in a "newb" (not the starter) corp for experience sake.  I want to participate NOW.  I don't want my ships and gear handed to me, I want to participate in EVE, the real adventure, with a real corp.  Please don't tell me to join the recruiting channel.  And is there something else I should be looking at?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Check the recruitment forum on EVE's website

    Recruitment Forum

There are many corps accepting and in fact looking for new players such as yourself. Do not be afraid to move to another corp if the one your in does not suit your taste. Use your time in the corp to extablish connections and make yourself known amoung the locals. Eventually you'll find a group that you'll want to fly with.

I don't want my ships and gear handed to me, I want to participate in EVE, the real adventure, with a real corp.

Sometimes you're going to have to accept those gifts as they will allow you to participate to a more fuller extent. I can understand why some players don't like being handing money and equipment when they are new, but from the corp stand point a new player is much more valuable using the donations to further the corp goals than be gimped by their own lack of resources.

It will never be within your grasp, since EVE has no endgame.

And yes, checking out the Recruitment thread on the official Forum is definitely a good start. There are a lot of corps that take in players with 1 mill SP. Celestial Horizon and EVE university being two of those.

I guess I lost my mind because I missed the recruitment forum on the boards.  I posted here because I knew my post would not get jammed to the bottom within minutes.  I hate doing /bumps because it makes you look desperate for attention or post count or something.

Thanks for the tip guys.  And I realize there is no endgame, it is just a simple term to use.

http://www.everecruitment.com/ is a new resource that has some use too.

Personally, I prefer to simply watch the Eve Recruitment channel in game while I'm multitasking some other activity. But what this does is let me get a feel for the corps in terms of the intelligence/coherence of their writing ability and their general attitude towards the type of player I am. Then I can instantly start a conversation to learn more about the corp to see if they would even be worth bothering with. This can get rather tedious to be sure and no doubt is time intensive. But a corp can make or break your experience.

I really didn't enjoy my first corp at all and quit the game because of it. I'm now back because Eve is the only MMO that offers everything I'm looking for and will continue to be so for at least another 6 months, probably more (and by that time the next big expansion, Kali, will be out). Anyway, make sure the corp fits well with your current playstyle. If you want to be a moneywhore you can find a 0.0 based corp that will accept you if you just have some hauling skills. This is boring as hell in my opinion but you can make money faster and get more involved with the political side of 0.0. Just remember, 0.0 is costly and you need others to be online to make it enjoyable because you're worthless out there on your own as a noob or even semi-noob.

You can also join an empire based corp that will allow you to develop your character at your comfotable, current speed. I personally would recommend this just because there is less risk of losing everything to a mixup or hostile takeover of your corp's 0.0 space. Like I said, just make sure the corp fits into exactly how you want to play at this time. If your wants change and the corp doesn't, you can always take off. Just like the real world, no one stays with their company forever.

thanks for the tip avatar.  Recruitment channel always felt like spam to me but I probably didn't give it enough of a chance.  I have been looking at a few corps on the eve recruitment forum that appear reasonable for my style and have also looked at that website you mentioned.  Although I am not a newb to the game mechanics, I am a newb to the corp / political etc so I am going to guess that an empire based corp is going to be best for me for the time being.  Plus, I have a distaste for hauling unless someone is in the mood to throw me a ton of insta BMs for my routes.

No end game in sight is the truth.  Its like knitting, if your doing it for a sweater go buy a sweater and save yourself the time.  Its a game not a job and if its fun to play, play. Finding a good Corp in Eve is far easier than any other. They mostly dont screen out newbs, they screen for survival skills.  Easiest way to find a corp is move into a region and try some local chat.  Most quality corps are unlikely to recruit you this way, however you may find yourself contacted via eve mail or directed to a corp sight.  Respect in this game is earned not given.

Newbs floating in .02-0.o space are not respected, they are destroyed.  However newbs that are hard to destroy making a living in these zones will soon find themselves recruited.  It isn't the newness that prevents you from being recruited, its the lack of experience.  Read forums to componsate for this.  Eve has an incredible forum base.
