I've been searching around looking for a MMORPG afterplaying 2 years of SWG and then a year break from one. Ive been searching for about 2 weeks now and want to know a couple of questions (about DaoC) before i decide anything.
How big of a part is crafting in this game?
Whats the crafting system like?
Ive read past post which says join classic servers and such and suchl. can your avatar switch these servers?
Anything in regard to me changing what ill buy from AO or EQ2?
thanks for any suggestionis

DAOC crafting is very well done and very much in demand. Moreso on the classic servers because crafters make the best gear around. On the "Normal servers" crafted gear takes second fiddle to artifacts so it's a lot less demanded. Which is why I recommend that crafters play on the 'classic' servers. I have yet to see anyone say how Mythic plans to address the artifact impact on the crafters on normal servers. (Artifacts are from TOA).
But as far as crafting goes:
You buy or get resources with which to make items. You can get resources by buying them from vendors or by tearing apart gear/equipment that you find from loot or that guildmates give you. As far as crafting system overall I'd rate the crafting system average but the demand for crafted goods is 'excellent' so if you're looking to be a crafter whos items will be in demand DAOC is an awesome game for your average crafter. Also, crafting is independant of your level so once you get going in it you can craft without ever entering combat. The initial start, however, will cost some money, which usually means some time killing / questing unless someone spots you a loan. You can quickly start making a profit however. Especially on 'classic' servers because the low level chars are always looking for gear. Even 'alts'.

1. Characters cannot switch servers. You have I think 10 character slots per server and they stay on that server.
2. Crafting on classic is in high deamand. The only servers not so much.
3. Crafting = boring. But then again I have most of the crafters at max for the game now so I am a little burnt out. You buy resources and then pick the item you want to make. You click the item and you watch a green bar go acorss the screen. When it reaches the end you have a chance to make the product.
4. Spellcrafting. Spellcrafting is the only thing that makes crafted items worth anything. I will not go into detail about it, but I will say that you need high quality items (swords, armor, etc). As you get more mundane crafters in the game then it becomes harder to make a profit making mundane items. Further, most item qualities will need to be 99% or 100%. This can be a long process.
5. There is no about to customize the crafted items like in SWG.
6. Final note about crafting, you pretty much need to be at the top of your craft to be employed. You have a slightly better chance of this on the Classic servers.
So in short crafting is very important to DAOC, but it is no SWG. SWG is regarded by most to be surperior to DAOC crafting. We are expecting a major patch soon that will overhaul the crafting system. What we get I do not know, but it should be an improvement over this. The crafting system in DAOC is based off of the old EQ system of the late 90's so as such is way out of date.
All true
But a lot of people still enjoy it. And once you are among the top crafters on your server you'll have more work than you can shake a stick at.
I never said it was fun... just useful to the game.... unlike most other MMORPG's (*cough* EQ2/WoW/Lineage/Etc *cough*)

thanks alot, i think im pretty much decided for DaoC, the RvR sound really intresting plus a game thats been out awhile doesnt suffer the bugs of a new game.
see you in game perhaps
One of the things that I always admired about Mythic was there never were really many *bugs* with DAOC... sure it had a few.... but the only real issues the game has ever had were balance issues for the most part. Bugs were pretty few and far between. Still are. Balance issues... there are some... but they're not as bad as most other games either.....
Mythic and CCP are easily the best at producing patches that don't destroy the game when they go in. And the 'quality over quantity' policy that both companies follow has long been proven to be the right way.

A couple notes on the crafting. Make sure you have alot of money when you start it and ALOT more time. Or a tv and dvd player next to your computer.
Top skill rating is generally around 1300 (mark me if Im wrong guys). The first 500 points of any craft isn't too bad but after that the supplies start getting more expensive and time consuming. I had a 807 weapon crafter, master armor crafter (sadly cant remember the skill), 967 alchie, 872 spellcrafter and even then I still got alot of orders (mostly from aliance members). My specialization was for Thidranki which is the level 20-24 battleground where I could make you armor, weapons, and be able to spellcraft and proc (dmg add) them. I would also spend time with players who wanted this stuff but didn't have a template set up. Alot of times if you can get your spec and skill bonuses into any magical items then that would save more room to play with the suit like being able to put magic and weapon resist in and added hit points. So your average every day character can go into a battleground with better weapons than what you may find from drops, be more resistant to magic and other players weapons, and can live longer with anywhere from 50 to 400 extra hit points.
Mythic also added a craft questing system which upon completing (you can take these quests as many times as you want) will get you an item that will either allow you to craft smarter (better chance of gaining in skill), craft better (better chance of creating a better item) or craft faster (pointless)
Now I've read the other posts on this site where the guys are saying that these crafters are loved by all for they're ability due to no TOA. But we are loved the same way even in the regular servers. There are template making programs on the web that you can pick up so you can place your artifacts items/weapons/armor. Grab some nice non artie jewelry (try the Bead of resist stones quest; stygia in TOA; level 48. Item: 7% to heat, cold, matter, and energy I believe) and fill in the blanks with crafted items and youhave a truly unbelievable character.
Spellcrafting and alchie they changed so those crafters wouldn't lose so much money. Unlike the other crafters who can salvage they're items and re-use most of the materials (you never get all the materials back) the SC and alchie cant do this but they can sell they're stuff back to a merchant for only a minor loss in profit unlike before.
My suggestion is if you do decide on a crafter try the alchie first. They can make poisons for the assassin classes, water breathing potions that everyone needs, trophie making potions, procs and charges for weapons (proc goes off at random, great toy. The charge you have to /slash use and you can use it only so many times before you have to recharge it. I like to put it on a warriors shield so they have some kind of range.), weapon and armor dye's and much much more.
hint- ask around on how to change your class to craft on the /who list so instead of saying ragnaroth level 27 Thane in Aigerhamn it would say ragnaroth junior apprentice tailor in aigerhamn. Helps peeps find you
Aside from the crafting DAOC does have more to offer. Theres random quest upon random quest. You also have class specific quest which will get you some nice equipment while leveling and a really nice suit of armor once you complete them. With the catacombs expansion you receive the wonderful task dungeons and instances. With a task dungeon the task master will tell you to clear the caves, kill some named mob, or 11 of this or that. Then you get to go to your own dungeon and complete this task. Fast way to level. Instances are like the TD except that all you do is kill mobs which in turn drop auralite (another form of money that can be used in the catacombs cities) These two dungeon types generally dont drop loot but do drop money. Regular dungeons you'll have more loot dropping along with money. Or even in the open area
Now if you get bored of leveling theres the battlegrounds where you can fight other players from level 1 to 45 and after that its the frontiers. In the battlegrounds from level 15 and up you will start receiving realm points. When you receive so many realm points you gain a realm rank and 1 realm skill point which you can use to advance your character even more. You also earn money ffom killing players too.
Once you receive alot of money and you've gathered alot of treasure, head out to housing and get yourself a nice little house that you can decorate. You can also add a merchant on the side and sell items through himto other players at any price you want to set. Another side project that you can do with the house is collect trophies for display. Certain named mobs will drop remains that you can take to a taxidermist in the housing market and with the right trophie potion (made by the alchie) you can get a stuff monster to show off.
And last but not least (although I never got a chance to try this myself) you have the new darkness rising expansion which allows you to do champions levels and quest which allow you to cross train skills from another class. they'll be weaker than what that class can actually do but imagine a warrior who heals himself or a caster with a shield and sword. You can also achieve champion weapons (stats are ok on them but man do they look awesome). You can also buy mounts ranging from your standard chestnut horse to incredible mounts.
Summing it up dark age does has alot to offer and they keep coming out with more so theres no end to what you can do.
All tradeskills are capped between about 1065 and 1200 depending on your tradeskill and your server type.
once again thanks for the avalanche of answers back, hope ingame comunity is as friendly as u are.
one more question what about crafting macros?
To alot of people crafting is extremely boring, hence why I set up alternate entertainment by my pc (I cannot begin to say how many movies I have watched while crafting). Never heard of getting xp for crafting but I never really looked either. I do know though that after 600 or 700 points your guild starts getting merit points off of ya.
The crafting quest are nice to do when your ready to go insane but the 1st one, atleast in mid cause mid was my main, was just a get this, get that mission with alot of running.
Best tailor to make would have to be bonedancer. Pick a field with greens and blues and is nuetral. Set your skelli's to aggro and sew away. My roomy achive 12 levels and 600 points in tailor doing this.
The payout can be good though. My healer was almost legendary but just barely outside of it and one peep offered 10 plat for a mastercrafted 102 chain helm. If I coulda made it I'd been all over it. Legendary weapons at 100 qual easily go for 4-12 plat (maybe more) depending on the server your on and even lower qual ones can get you a pretty plat.
Another bonus of crafting is this. You go farm somewhere and gather tons upon tons of crappy generic weapons and armor, each of which sells for like 3-20 gold. Have a crafter salvage them in raw material like asterite and netherium which alone will give you like a 200% increase in cash. Then hinge these materials (door hinging is in the metal working skill). Thats another increase. So 90 gold worth of items and turn into 5-700 gold. I did this for alot of alliance members constantly
I didn't see the post about the crafting macros or I woulda added them in the last post.
Theres a nifty toy that you can bur called a nostromo. It's black, has 8 buttons, a wheel, and a directional pad and fits easily in the palm of your hand. It also comes with a great little program where you can set those keys to do what you want.
So say your at 500 craft and it takes roughly about 45 seconds to complete each item. You go into the program and set it up so when the key is pressed it will "press button one: 2 seconds: release button one: wait 45 seconds: press button 1: 2 seconds: release button one: wait 45 seconds" so on ans so forth. This way you can set your back pack up with what it will take to use all 40 slots and go off to do something else.
side note: Mythic does not like this toy, it is the spawn of the devil to them. They believe that you should be at the keyboard pressing that button until your fingers bleed and if your caught using the nostromo the 1st its a warning and your craft is reduced to 1 again. Alot of people use it though and I mean alot. Go around and find people standing by the alch table, the anvil, or behind the cloth merchant and pm them. See how long it takes for them to respond and say they were afk doing something important. Um, ahem, not that I would know about all this personally, cough cough
