I'm going to wait 3-6 months after release and see what's up then. Figure that's enough time for all the worthless complainers to leave... and enough time for some people to "complete" the game and start becoming bored and make comments about what needs to be fixed to keep them playing. Thoose are always the best reviews IMO. As they list the most common reoccuring concerns.
Neverwinters Nights has had online options for quite awhile... and the second edition is in the works. The first one used an older ruleset I think allowing for some crazy strong chars... but the one in the works will be using 3.5. The are made to echo PnP as much as possible as they allow you to DM you own games. You code the duegon, but if the group is getting through too easy you can spawn more monsters or take control of a monster on the fly or make some custom weapons or bosses. That seems about as close as you can get to PnP to me. So DDO is simply a "MMO" version of DnD, because DnD has been available online before in quite good qualility.
I'm less than thrilled with this game at the current moment, my posts elsewhere in the forum will explain some of the reasons why. However, I also understand that not everyone is going to like or dislike something just because I do. People have different perceptions and desires.
I will say that for me the flaws are pretty major and based on my understanding of the MMORPG market, I predict the game is going to be received less than enthusiastically by the majority of the MMO market that buys it at launch. This is definitely one to take a "wait and see" attitude towards, rather than rush into a purchase you might regret. Unless, of course, you have a full understanding of the debate over the pros and cons or have had a chance to beta test the game and still find it's definitely the game you want to buy. To each their own.
I'm going to wait to see how heavily instanced it is. If it is as heavy as everyone says it will be (Guild Wars) than I will probably not buy it as I can play 1-8 player games without subscription fees.
Originally posted by Falconoffury Yeah, but Turbine also made the amazing AC1. I am going to try the stress test and see how it feels. No matter how much you read, you don't really know a game until you play it. If this gameisn't for you, wait for MiddleEarthOnline.
Wrong answer.
Right answer.------------( try waiting for Vanguard. )
Look. Everyone is saying that because it is fully instanced it is just like GW. mWrong answer. Because practically all MMO's have quests that say kill this amount of zombie dudes and you beat the quest, mean that all of them are exactly the same. No gosh darn't it doesnt. DDO is meant for you and a few friends to get together and go in your own private dungeon and explore and have fun

If you think Instacning is kill this and kill that you need to relearn the word. DDO is like guild wars in that its 100% instanced. its as said in a different post by a different person its like a network game.
GW and DDO are the same in that. and yes you will run out of content soon like you do in guild wars.
DDO is a new version of Guild wars with new looks and a monthly fee added to it.
I'm just totally baffled as to how people can say DDO is exactly like GW. DDO and GW are similar in the same way GW and WoW are similar. Every game has instances, I curse GW for making instance a dirty word. And as to fees, you're not paying money for instances. You're paying money for customer support, constant development, constant addition of content, etc. The same things you pay to play WoW or EQ2.
I don't know why I even bother. Probably best to not have such people playing such a good game anyhow.. lol.

Agreed When it comes to instancing, Guild wars did it wrong and D&D Online did it right. Besides, this game has huge amounts of content and the quests are actually interesting for once, its not like those lame "kill 10 monsters" or "collect 10 things" quests you see in most other MMO's.
I'm a fan of D&D games, I'm a fan of the D&D Rules, and I absolutely love what they did with D&D Online, I'll certainly be playing it and even buying it at launch. Especially since I cant find anyone in my neighbourhood thats also interested in D&D games.

Lets get one thing strate. We're talking about instanced games like GW and DDO, not every game is 100% instanced world like that. and instancing isn't a big thing and isn't alot of it in every game. there are allot of games with out instancing. and allot games witn instanced missions only. those kind are not instanced worlds like GW and DDO.

Instanced world are boring as hell, it's empty no matter where you go. Guess instanced games are cheaper to maintain.
Honestly its fun, but it needs more for me to even think about paying amonthly fee for. I realize its in beta still, so hopefully more will be implemented. Definitely has potential but then again...so did SWG.

You can't compair DDO to PRE NGE SWG. There is no way to do that as SWG is not instacned, and DDO is 100% instacned aside from the taverns and other little player meeting places You have will not meet other real players out side of those little meeting places.
PRE NGE SWG and NGE SWG are not instanced at all. You could compair DDO to Guild Wars since they are alike. Both 100% instanced.
I think the best description of DDO I have read anywhere was "Tomb Raider Online with a Dungeons and Dragons wrapper".
Action/Adventure/RPG. Jump, climb, smash boxes, pull levers etc... Die, try again, learn the quest until you find the way to beat it... Not solo though, action/adventure/RPG with forced grouping and the ability to gimp your character with the wrong creation and advancement choices.
I can't comment myself because of the NDA, but I thought that was pretty close to the mark. I think I am allowed to share a general opinion? The game has a small amount of potential, but it falls well short of what one would expect from a next-generation MMO, or even a first generation one.
I am taking notes though, so when the NDA is lifted I'll gladly debate the details

I wasn't comparing the gameplay, just the "POTENTIAL" both games have. SWG had so much potential yet it went the completely opposite direction. This one also has the "potential" so we'll see how it plays out.
instancing is playing with fire. It can be real good - I think WoW did it real good imo , or it can be real bad - like EQ2.
Instancing needs to be a sub feature of a MASSIVe MULTIPLAYER online game not the heart.
Making an instanced game will mean the game will forever be a game. MMOs IMO should measure their success by transforming a bunch of zones into a world, or universe.
This game may be an AWESOME game, but it will never be a awesome WORLD if its instanced so.

-W.
I will not be playing it.
Guild Wars was enough instancing for me.
I can't see paying a monthly fee for DDO, no instanced game should have a monthly fee.
I know some of you will argue with me over how DDO will be but, All i have to say is, Its Turbine thats making it.
Turbine are not very good game makers. if you remember they are the makers of the now closed down AC2.
I think alot of you will be disapointed after days/weeks or a few months of play in DDO.
Yeah, but Turbine also made the amazing AC1.
