Thanks for the map tip.  Any idea if there is a way to lock combat on the mob?

One of the things I was impressed with earlier in the day was stability.  That went out the window this evening.  The game must have crashed at least 20-30 times on me this evening.   I got 4 chars stuck where I could not log them back in.  With only 3 chars per subscription I just deleted them and started again.  The highest I have reached is a lvl 9 healer.  It is very easy to lvl,  With stable servers it would be easy to get to 10 in 30 minutes to an hour.

The combat and the gameplay is poor.  But it is what I expected.  The world is really beautiful.  Much nicer and so much bigger than I expected.  It  seems like a pretty fantastic world for a pvp game.   There are so many games that make me sad because of lost potential.  I am afraid DnL will be one of those.  Looking at the world I can see this game being a great game for crafters.  Maybe a better version of horizons but with a purpose for crafting.  All the place for resources.  All the places to hide armies waiting to attack.  The fantastic areas for building.  It makes your mouth water.  I don't mind the graphics I actually am starting to like them.  I still hate the UI its bad and does not seem to be growing on me.

Unfortuntately it looks like a completely unfinished game if the rest of the world is like the starter island.  My guess is its probably worse.   I can see an argument that player built content and player built cities might save it.  But I don't see it that way.  The game needs more pve depth than what it has at least at low lvls.  Combat is easy and snore fest so far.  Hopefully grouping is needed at higher lvls and combat becomes more strategic and interactive.  But that looks doubtful.  It neeeds so much a legitimate fun combat system, real quests, npcs, crafting, resources, incemtive to explore.  Eseentially it needs everything.  All that it seems they have done in 5 years is build a world.  It is a beautiful world but the game needs more than that.

Despite all that I am having a lot of fun playing SoG.  If you just accept it for what it is and not what it isn't its enjoyable at least for a few days.   I have been a big critic of DnL on these boards but despite that I enjoyed my first few hours of playing a lot more than I thought I would.  I hope to keep enjoying the game and try to max a few chars to SoG's max lvl of 50 and get a better educated opinon.  Kudos to Np3 on the world they built but shame on them for what appears to be the wasting its great potential.

Playing DnL really makes me hunger for Vanguard.  Vanguard claims it will have a huge world, a crafting system similar to horizons and what was planned for dnl but what looks like an involved interactive combat system and most importantly made but what we can only hope are skilled devlopers who know how to make a MMORPG.

I hope people are enjoying SoG.  Tommorow will probably be an even rougher day with all the settlers coming in.  But at least everyone will be able to play.  Even if you hate this game you have to fly on a dragon once into the clouds.  It is pretty thrilling.  The view on top of the dragon over the world is quite breathtaking.  If you have been a fan of DnL this long its at least worth seeing once before you move on to the next game.

It is a completely unfinished game zippy. So it's accurate to call it that.

It's not only a very watered-down version of a beta version of DnL, it's a rushed game that was released as a goodwill gesture to the devoted fans.

I'm not expecting polished about this game.

This is where we differ.  I would argue that SoG is an almost exact copy of the dnl beta version not a watered down version.  If they had a better version to show us why would they go to the trouble to make this world.  All that would do is drive away their customer base.  Isn't it more likely they are giving us SoG because they are afraid to show us the beta version.  At least with SoG they can say hey its not the real game.

If the beta version is a better version they have 3 choices.  Drop the NDA and let the best testers tell us, let us play a smaller version of the beta or just watch as their customer base becomes to believe SoG is DnL and moves on to the next game.

To believe that the beta version is somehow better or different than SoG in any material way really seems to be wishful thinking.  Quite similar to the magic build theory that many horizons beta testers believed in a few years ago.

The other problem here is not only is the game unfinished but its unfinished to the extent that if you took a competent dev team they would need 1-2 years to get this game release ready.  Now figure out how long that would take NP3 to get the game release ready and I think we need to at least double that figure and we are then talking at least 2-4 years.  Unfortunatly the limited amount I saw today does not resemble a late beta game but rather an early aplha game.  Again from my previous post the sadness to me here is not how long it will take for it to be fixed but rather the unliklihood it will ever be fixed and the resulting lost potential of a truly beautful world.

I changed my interface under settings to use the arrow keys for moving so this is how I do it.  Take off by holding the zero key on the numberpad and the down arrow (your X key on default).  The down arrow or X under the default setup makes you go up while the up arrow or the W makes you go down.  Left and right directional keys turn.  There are some glitches where your dragon if it hits an objects gets stuck and you have to dismount to get him unstuck. so you can dive bomb bu holding the forward key and pull up with the back key thats all there really is to it.  At least from what I know.

The impression I see are exactly what I hear from a friend when he 1st got into beta.

Good: Huge world, weather, flying / boarding is fun.

Bad: Animation, UI, graphics, combat, sound, few NPC / Quest.

Unfortunately, the "good" only last for a few days.  What makes or breaks a game is what's currently in the "bad."  Just so people know, SoG build is better than Beta.  My friend didn't even get to test SoG before it was release so don't blame the beta testers for the way it is.  Final warning, don't expect them to be quick with fixes, weeks and months are not unusual.

As you all did, I watched the game for months, booked a couple of days off, paid $90CND, waited, waited, waited, waited, waited, waited, and got a buggy game that looks dark, choppy, and have been disconnected twice now. All the launch BS aside, I feel sick that the graphics look terrible. I know this is just the beginning but still, the screen shots posted on the site promised beautiful landscapes, sunsets and generally a picturesque world. I suppose I was expecting a world that was a little better fleshed out as far as detail goes. I really hope it gets better.

You didnt pay for this, you paid for DnL, not SoG. Have you tried the /setengine high? After I did that i think the graphics look great.

Flying is by far the best part of the game (with the music coming in 2nd). They did an awesome job with that. I did run into a bug where I just flew in place though.

Some things that really bothered me are the lack of NPCs/quests, the choppiness (I'll try setting the graphics quality down to 1 or 2 next time), and the consistent client crashes.

Seeing the size of the starting island compared to just the territories in SoG, I'm also thinking that the maps may be too big, with lots of empty space and nothing to fill that space.
