Combat Primer?

I've seen a number of people posting on combat, but I could use the most basic of information on how to fight. Assuming I can find my way to a starter area with mobs, that is, flying is a quick way to get lost *laughs* ... and I ctd every five minutes, so I'm never sure where I am when I manage to log back in.
Anyway, here's how I've fought so far:
Fight 1: Ahah, a spider! Select it, go to it, hit the attack key. Nothing. Up comes another person, as I'm standing right there, and he beats up the spider with a club or mace. OK, maybe he didn't know I was trying to attack it.
Fight 2: Yay, another spider, and no one nearby. Mine! I hit the range attack key from far enough away and get the spider's attention with a bolt. It runs up to me. OK, better get out my club. How? I can't get it double-clicking, in fact I don't even have one, what I thought was a club is a torch. I basically get munched, dying without ever fighting back. Respawn and ctd and game is out cold.
Fight 3: Someone has said you can store your dragon by fiddling with the pet control box. I follow directions as best I can -- scrolling is going way too fast and I can't scroll up faster in the chat than others put new lines in and yank me back to the bottom -- and my dragon is released to the wild. Huh?
I summon it back. A /new/ dragon lands. Aiee! I want my first dragon! I double click it, and suddenly we are fighting. New dragon helps me kill the old one, which sort of needed to happen so I could name the new one the same name, I figure. I don't know if I got xp from that, I hope not, or there's an exploit, just keep summoning a pet and killing it. But I've no idea how to look at my FXP.
Fight 4: Never happened. Crashed as I flew about. I found a town, but the labels over most folk's heads were red, so I assumed they were enemies and fled. Was just in sight of what seemed to be my starter town when I ctd'd.
Plus it's always night every time I log in, darn it. Awfully hard to see mobs.
Anyway, the point of all this is I have no clue how to make my character fight anything. So, can anyone post a basic primer, step by step? Thanks.

At least you could actually attack something. The 15 or 16 critters I've run across in last couple of days. I've been able to attack exactly zero of them.
In War - Victory.
In Peace - Vigilance.
In Death - Sacrifice.
Cow kicked my arse....how was I suppose to know it was in a group.
I knew my first combat experience was destined to end in failure but to have a group of cows totally own me was a little embarrassing. At least there was know one else around to watch it.

I actually managed to fight a spider earlier. It beat me bad. But at first I couldn't do anything. It eventually ran off and only after I chased it did my attack button work.
Oh, and try to figure out what those spells do! Everyone kept telling me to use spells that sounded like healing spells, but are damage spells! Even the spell "find your food" seems to do damage.
What is up with this game? It's just bad. It's leaving a very sour taste in my mouth.
