Class help please

hi am starting off new, and since theres.....alot of classes i would like some opinions and help, i like rogue type of classes, catch the enemy offguard and get the moment of surprise and kill a enemy quick and do strong burst damage. By reading i am guessing Infiltrator suits that style. My question is how are they in leveling up, r they wanted in groups, and r they good for pvp *pvp is a plus*. If the Infiltrator isnt that great or the rogues aren't, then i would like a class thats can do strong burst damage, can solo well, and does great in pvp, i dont want a invincible class i just dont wanna have a class whos isnt helpful or that dies alot in pvp since thats my goal, to pvp goodly ::::02:: .....Necromancer i had my eyes on,but i dunno, like is said any input would be great help and i would appreciate it ::::01:: thanks in advance

    1. Please do not play an Alb. I have spent 4 years killing them the world does not need anymore of them ;)

    2. All assassin classes are really not wanted in a PvE group. You have leather armor and low hits. If you do a lot of damage then the mob agros on you and kills you. So in groups you mostly serve as a light tank doing minimal damage. You might be the only to pull the agro off of a healer or something. You do get poisons that can be useful, but when you pull mobs so quickly in a group that there is no reason to use it. You will only really use them on hard mobs, RvR, or if you solo.

    3. Soloing all assassin classes is slow. It can be done, but it is a rather slow class to level solo. There is a lot of downtime. The problem is that if you kill quickly then it means you go to the mob and he will have friends. This gets you killed. So you need to pull the mob to you. This means you will end up tanking it. This means you will end up loosing some health and need to wait for it to regen. The battles also last a lot longer. If you can sneak up on the mob then you can kill it in 5 seconds. If you pull him it will take 60-90 seconds at high levels.

    2. Assassin classes are fun in RvR (PvP) only. Further you will find it not so fun to play after level 45. One of the problems is only on the regular servers so I won't go into that. The other one will still be on the classic servers. Assassin classes attack from stealth (invisable). At one time only other assassin classes you see you under most circumstances. The rest of the classes could only see you if your stealth was low and/or you were very close and stood still for long periods of time. However they have added into the game a realm ability called Mastery of Stealth. Archer classes (which can also stealth) train in MoS. This allows them to see assassins. Further it allows them to see assassins at a much farther distances than two assassins can see each other. So for example at level 50 I am on my nightshade in stealth. I get shot by an arrow poping me out of stealth. It further takes away most of my health. I do /face. This command turns me to facing my enemy. He was so far off that it said he was too far away to auto face. Yet he shoots me again and kills me. This is from stealth that he shot me the first time!

Archer classes also get an ability that prevents them for a limited amount of time from being detected in stealth at all! After level 45 assassins will only hunt other assassins. On the Classic servers it is slightly better in that you can also hunt casters. You will find that you will have a lot more fun levels 1-45 in the battlegrounds (level specific PvP areas) than you will have after level 45 because of MoS. Very few people play them on the regular servers anymore because of it.

If you want a stealth class then I would suggest you play an archer class. You can stealth and snipe people from long distances. You do a huge amount of damage with your bow. You have beter armor than assassin classes. You will be slightly more wanted in groups. Lastly in the post 45 range you will have a lot more fun.

If you play in Hib and want a tank class, then you most likely will want to play a Vamp. If not then a Blademaster. Both of them do a lot of melee damage.

But if you really want to do the most damage then play any of the caster classes. Some things you train in might not be so good for solo/damage but most caster classes have a spec where you can do lots of damage. You will be able to solo. You will be wanted in groups. You will do well in RvR.

Julian that comment I see about the archer hitting you and you couldn't auto-face him.  Mastery of stealth is good but will never ever be that good.  Most assassin classes also spec in mastery of stealth so if your MoS and his are equal they negate each other.  If his is greater he may see you coming up on him and have a chance to counter act or if yours is greater then you can move into a better position but unless your stealth was like 24 for that 50 toon then theres no way he could see you from the distance you described.  I say he was a radar user, it's the only other option.

And the archer ability is camoflauge.  Set on a 10 minute timer and stays on until you either leave stealth or shoot.  It's kinda like having more MoS in the respect that it does make it harder to see them but doesnt make it easier for them to see you.  Downside is that the timer resets everytime you get killed.

Stealthers are always abundant on every server.  When someone keeps getting killed with their nonstealther they always seem to have a backup stealther hanging around in that same battleground.

I agree with julian though.  If your insistant on a stealther/rogue type go for a archer.  They are alot of fun to play and dont require the patience that you would normally need with an assassin.  Keep in mind that whatever stealth class you play to get atleast MoS3 (it can go up to 6 but most people stop at 3)  Its just essential to a stealther.  And archerers do get more attention for groups that assassins will.

Being A newbie ( currently downloading ) to DAoC and  in the past always being a ranger, I thought I'd try some melee.Well, after reading this thread, I've re-thought that idea.

I do solo a fair amount of the time, even thou a couple friends have started playing  the game along with me. I figure between soloing and the RvR feature of the game the ranger would offer more entertainment. If i am completely off base thinking please let me know.

I do have a couple questions ...  where should my starting points go and should they follow that percent as you level

Is one race better suited for an archer than others?

what is an MoS ( was mentioned when talking about stealth )

Are all realms the same and just the professions have different names?

and lastly ...  and other ranger ( archer ) tips or hints would be greatlky appreciated

Hope to see you all in game ....  Thanks for the help !

There is a FAQ that will answer most of your questions. I will bump that up in a second.

People enjoy playing all types of characters. A ranger will have a harded time soloing than say a Vamp or a Caster. However, they are a lot of fun for RvR.

As for a race? It really does not matter. I will say that people choose to be as hard to target and see as possible when playing a ranger. This means lurikeens are the ususal race for rangers. There are some differences in stats but for the most part they even out at higher levels because of spells and magic armor

MoS is master of stealth. It is a realm ability that allows archers to see other stealth classes. This is an ability they did not have. It allows rangers to now see assassin classes and thus can shoot an assassin at a distance and prevent the assassin from getting close enough to use his critical strike (assassination) skills.

The realms have unique classes. It is not a difference in name only. You will find that each side has casters, tanks, healers, archers, and assassins.

You understated the effectiveness of Camoflage against assassins. It totally negates MoS detection when it's up.

All MoS does for assassins is give them increased stealth movement and see the occasional archer who forgot to camoflage.

Or an archer who just fired and is trying to get away via stealth.  Or an archer who is moving while stealthed.  Or an archer who is standing still, stealthed, in the woods, in deep shadow, who's Camo timer (10min is an eternity in RVR) has not yet reset.

The only thing that has ever broken camoflage on my scout is combat, not just simply moving.
