does anyone no if you need the orignal ww2 online to play ww2 on battleground europe

If you mean the original disc that came with the box in June 2001, no.
But you can download the game for free at WWII Online's download page.
If you played back then (you created an account) should you be able to reactivate it again by reactivating your subscription. Try and see if you can do that. If you are unable to reactivate your old account should Krieger at Krieger@playnet.com be able to help you.
Lots of ol'timer is coming back nowdays, and they all reactivating their old account. In some cases is their old in-game names taken, but their activation key is still valid.
