I have already quit the game because it suffers from all the other deficiencies of a 2nd generation MMO, but it a stunningly beautiful and pleasant game for the first few days. It also uses a real-time training system which I would like to see further developed into the fantasy genre.
Note that beyond the graphics, sound, and interesting skills-based treadmill this is a lackluster attempt at even a steady 2nd gen mmo, and thus the limited playerbase. Nonetheless, many games would do quite well with a consistent 15k-20k playerbase.
This game is something you can enjoy now and again, but continued gameplay is almost macroable in its simplicity.

Oh man!...this is getting just to much. This topic has been discussed over and over almost like the "should I try wow or eq2" threads.
I can honestly say I tried eve and found it boring, but thats my opinion and I respect the opinion of the people who like it. I still dont understand how it can be in the top 1 or 2 spots all the time...its almost like a person sits there and clicks the "Eve is great" link on mmorpg.com
The only group I would find that may have issue with the real time system would be powergamers and people who play multiple characters simultaneously.
However it completely eliminates screwing up how you built your character as you can get any skill no matter how you started.
It also limits the need to play multiple characters since one can do everything.
Powergamers will not like this concept however because they cannot jump ahed of everyone.
I really want a good space-flightly MMO, but I've tried all that I know exist, and none of them, including EVE are there yet.

Good,Bad, I'm the guy with the gun!-Ash
Sorry, my first day here. Don;t have any idea how much games are discussed. Just hought some people might not know that it is a beautiful if not eventually shallow game.
Since I can;t seem to find a game that doesn't fit that concept....
1. It's Sci-Fi Based, like Starcraft, not fantasy based.
2. And, it does have it's own section here...

yah for some reason i cant seem to get intrested in sci-fi games whats soo good about it that has everyone talking about it even comparing it to WoW....doesnt seem all that great to me
"I'm sorry but your mmo has been diagnosed with EA and only has X number of days to live."
Eve is a decent game, for the person that doesnt like to grind away for hours in front of the computer like a zombie, this mmo allows you to still HOLD a job and play it. Yes the skill training is long and tediously boring to stare at, but in most respects the skills that do take that long would take longer in a fantasy game to grasp. Like the One month skills or LvL5 as most people would know it. Is meaning you are a master of what that skill is. You cannot get any higher in the game than that. And thats just a few months. maybe 6months, now come now, it takes that long to level so forth get the gear in other mmo's in the same time frame. Spending hours sitting in front of the computer instead of going out with friends, or actually doing something, getting laid for once, i dont know. So that doesnt bother me so much, yes the game play is macroable, it is repetattive. But nothing beats a corp vs corp war.
When you look at it, its just like the real world on the ups and downs that go throughout the game, a corp (country) would be at peace for some time, wanna mine somewhere else, (make more money or ISK) only to find that someone else already claimed that land, and boom battle. Heh kinda stops the bordum. But mostly what keeps you on your toes, are the pirates. People sit at gates wait for you to come by and BOOM, your dead. That's one other thing, that ALOT of people do not like is, that when you get blown up, you loose everything you had, and you CANNOT get it back. Your whole ship, all the guns EVERYTHING you had on you, is now gone. Imagine a mob, way higher lvl killing you, while playing a fantasy game, and loosing all your equipment. Its a real big set back to ALOT of people. But thats what makes this game so hard, and keeps people active as they are, and what drives the economy so it never becomes saturated, it never has to many of this or that, cause people die ALL THE TIME.
With all of that being said, yes i htink everyone should give this game a try, its a little out of the box in its ways, but it fights a few people very well. Oh and they don't charge you for EXPANSIONS like other money hungry mmo's. So thats always a good thing.

That is correct. Or you can play two accounts at once. How great a game is that!
I played EVE a while back. It was boring and I quit. I thought the scenery was cool but I cannot imagine why you urge people to try it when you know the game sucks, overall.
My unsolicited, yet guru-like opinion is don't play EVE, you will miss nothing.
I load eve up when I can't sleep. works every time.
In my opinion this game would suck for you if you dont have a good corp, from what i remember all the fun i had was doin stuff with my corporation, even mining. Theres nothing better than flying out to a hostile system looking for a decent spot to mine the good shit, while constantly looking out for pirates or being the one protecting your corp (I did my fair share of both back in the day). EVE is more adult oriented too, like other people were saying, you need some patience while playing it and an overall higher maturity level.
EVE is definitely not a loner game, so if you have trouble making friends then you're screwed.
And anyone who says combat in EVE is boring has to be a damn retard, because it always kept me on my toes and actually got some adrenaline rushing. Much better than running around bashing mobs to death with no strategy other than how fast you can click your skills, and dying/killing in PvP in 2 seconds. Battles can get pretty damn cool in this game.
But then again, this is my experience from playing it since the beginning (may 6, 2003), starting out with almost everyone as a newb and a lot of exploration going on. I guess it changed since I stopped playing, which the only reason I did so was because the devs made a certain group of beta testers the only people who got to take part in the game's storyline. That and they were constantly nerfing the game too much for me. Anyway, this game is definitely orgininal, comparetively, and should definitely be given a try...
I do miss my shiny blue Class 3 Gallentean Thorax Cruiser tho . And damn was it shiny.
The point&click combat system is frustating, sorry I preffer WASD+mouse, or anything more active. I felt like I wanted to move my ship in a way and I wasn't able to do so. The game is low paced. You get better skills by not playing, and it's not casual friendly because of the large trips... When I tryed out EVE this summer (because of the good ratings and i like sci-fi), the only things that really got my attention were the pretty good market system, the nice music and the stellar backgrouds.
I wouldn't recommend it to any new MMORPG player, but it's not true that the playerbase is more adult than in other games. As in any FFA RPGs you get griefers and l33t talk anywhere once you are out of the safe zones. If the gankers have 30 years instead of 12, it doesn't make the playerbase better
If you like PvE, I would recommend WoW, but only if you can afford the time and patience for the high-end hardcore 40ppl instances. For PvP it's much more difficult to say as I haven't found my game yet. WoW has a very nice interactivity and skill use, but the PvP system itself is frustating (instanced BGs and honor farming system). Just now I was re-trying Ultime Online
Nice eyecandy it gives, however the lack of game content killed it for me...also the fact that your are a ship in the game forever which reduces the immersion facter quite a bit. One thing it suffers is the constant griefing by players in all security status areas, the scammers in the escrow market and vast unpopulated systems in 0.0. It was a good game for me over 2 yrs. Only thing that can keep one in the game is the friends you make.
