I agree with FFXI. I love the Final Fantasy series, but I was already wrapped up in another MMO so I didn't buy it right away. I did eventually buy it couple of friends convinced me how great it is. I quickly realized it wasn't final fantasy..they just made a copy MMO and slapped the name Final Fantasy onto it
I have to say Star Wars Galaxies. To see such a good game fall so far and so quickly is a shame. Games are suppose to get better not worse. A shame to see so much potential wasted.
From a more personal point of view I have to mention World of Warcarft and Final Fantasy XI. WoW because after being hyped so much as being a soloers game among other things it doesn't really live up it. The game is boring. The setting looks great but other then that I've had more fun and an easier time leveling in other games, even in EQ1. FFXI because after looking forward to the game for so long and being a huge FF fan the game was a huge letdown as it turned out to be the most forced-grouping mmorpg to be made at the moment. MOre so then anything that came before, at the same time, or after and it still hasn't changed.
WoW - expected more from blizzard than just a rehashed not really better than any other MMORPG game... I expected a Diablo. The king of MMORPG's, if you will.
Horizons - most who played this were let down by the fact that they spent money on this crap.
Eve - really didn't mind it but was let down by the realization it would be a few months before I could PLAY with other people effectively
UO - *%&$ing Trammel. Yay Siege Perilous. Darn, no one plays Siege Perilous. %$*^ing Trammel.
Shadowbane - 3 years and I still can't enter a cottage because I get stuck IN the steps.
SWG - my first time playing it, I Just laughed.
Jedi Outcast - eh not an MMORPG, but I loved the fighting style and it's a big let down that no game has adapted this fast pace gameplay in a MMORPG!!!
SWG by far. I was Master Bio Engineer and Master Creature Handler. Both professions were completely eliminated. I don't think it's possible to be more disappointed in a game than grinding your way to the top and then having all your work undone. And blaming it's downfall on the players is short-sighted. Every business has whiny, needy customers that want this that and the other thing changed. Ultimately, it's the responsibility of the company to make decisions affecting how the business (game) is run.
A distant second would be DnL. I only really started watching it a few months ago, though I had been marginally aware of it for about a year or so. Now that SoG is, well, I was going to say, now that SoG is out, but I'll have to amend that to say now that SoG is in the process of being readied to be possibly made live by some possible time in the possible near future....well, anyway, I'm not going to beat this comatose, ICU, hooked-up-to-iron-lung, horse. It's possible, with herculean efforts on the game and by making huge amends to the community, that they could breathe some life back into it, but I don't expect it.
the biggest letdown for me was City of Villains and Final Fantasy XI.
City of Villains because its EXACTLY the same as city of heroes. It doesnt matter what so many revieuws say, my Corrupter played the EXACT same way as my blaster. the Brute played the EXACT same way as my Tank. not to mention there is a serious lack of actuall evil missions. you more fight against gangs because they said a bad word about poor ol recluse then doing actually evil missions. not to mention their always the same. big letdown.
Final Fantasy XI: Simply most boring mmorpg I'f EVER played. my god, Combat can't be more slow then this. my character hit a mob once in 5 seconds, a big NO. not to mention it lacks all the Final Fantasy stuff.
The Matrix Onine was the biggest let down. I cant believe only one person mentioned it. Compared to the hype before its release that proves how much of a let down it is.
Was following that product with interest and was stunned when they pulled the plug suddenly.
Then ... oops ... they did it again with another incarnation of Ultima Online!
Maybe it's for the best. To follow the original Ultima Online is dangerous if it doesn't seem "similar but better" than the first (Points to Asheron's Call 2).
The other big letdown was Horizons -- as it was originally intended to be -- a much more PvP-oriented game. Then the "company" got control and booted out the originator of the concept and ... well, you saw what happened.
Grrr....
I was really stoked about World of Warcraft until I started seeing those cartoony graphics. Then news started coming out about how PvP wasn't implemented yet. Then how there were only 60 levels. And I started to worry.
Anyway, sure, I bought the game and even without being a powerleveling I started leveling up fast and soon I had a max character and went, "Huh? That's it?" Some of the damn high level zones weren't even "itemized" (no loot added to mobs) when the game opened. Then, about the tenth time through the same instance with a raiding party and I went, "OK, I got it now -- ne plus ultra (nothing more beyond) and reluctantly left the game with a terminal case of Boredom Syndrome. (Noobs will keep that game alive forever, however).
Grrr, grrr....
But actually my biggest disappointment was Asheron's Call 2 -- because I was such a big fan of the original.
We all expected "AC with cool, updated graphics" and we got "WTF is this game???"
SWG - biggest let down by far. Next to the deceitful practices of Turbine/MS that were used for AC2, SOE/LA are even worse.
EQ2 - This game could have been better than average and once again SOE proves they shouldn't be making MMORPG's.
AC2 - So much potential and Turbine/MS blew it even before the game went live. Turbine/MS hyped this game so much in articles and the promises of what features would be in the game and even during beta we held out hope that the promised patch that would be released once the game went live would contain all the things they said it would - all lies.
Unfortunately I will have to say SWG. After 27 months of play to completely wipe everything away and start from scratch. To top it off, its total crap (again, my opinion).

Me and many of my friends had TONS of fun before this... now sadly we are all gone. Taking a game that was loved and making it hated definately was a BIG LET DOWN !
Imagine playing a game you totally love, you play so much you wonder what ever happened to your social life, you play for 2 complete YEARS and still love the game just as much, then the producers announce all of a sudden from nowhere that in 2 WEEKS!!! The game will be completely overhauled.
IMAGINE? Can you? That was the traumatic experience us SWG players had a couple of weeks ago! They removed everything the game ever stood for... greeat work SOE!
Oh, and my second most strong letdown of a MMORPG, D&D online...

1. WoW - Worse MMO experience . bad community and gameplay, like what the previous poster said.. its more like grinding after certain levels. I quit that recently due to kids talk and farmers.

SWG and WoW.
No comment needed.
Horizons - thanks to all the crap that went on with the dev team.
I'd say Wish as well, but that one doesn't count since it never quite reached the finish line.

Horizons - Big let down, had so much going for it but didnt measure up.
DaoC - Found this to be an utter grind. Quests were boring, crafting lousy. This one didnt even hold my attention for three months before i quit.
the biggest letdown for me was City of Villains and Final Fantasy XI.
City of Villains because its EXACTLY the same as city of heroes.

Final Fantasy XI..all the game is is nice graphics and sound. Oh yeah..and the title FINAL FANTASY.
AC2 was the biggest letdown for me. AC1 was the best mmorpg i have ever played and AC2 wasn't even similar. Such a shame
In this order.
