Okay, here's the deal: I was a die-hard SWG player for over 2 1/2 years. Unfortunately I just don't like it anymore (like everyone else! ) so I'm looking for a new game.
Do you know what game has these characteristics? I'm looking for one with these (or close to it):
- Many professions
- Non-twitch combat
- Good economy system
- Possibility to play w/ little combat, but with it too
- Without magic
Do you know of any games like that?
Thanks!!!!!!

That game sounds alot like Eve Online.
Interesting! I was looking at Eve a little bit... I read some bad reviews though; what's your opinions on the game?
Anyone else know other similar type games?
Its the best rated mmo right now, and its probably fun if its your type of game. But I found it boring, the combat was slow and automated; I found myself most of the time mining asteriod fields waiting for my skills to finish leveling.
I've read a lot about Eve in the last couple hours... it doesn't look like there are that many different profs... basically "mine" and "fight" - with slight variations. Am I wrong about this?
Also wondering if anyone knows of any other games like the ones I described earlier? Even ones in development??
Id recommend Anarchy Online, its much like SWG, and its in the top 7 player rated games on mmorpg, even after 4½ years!
Its a sci-fi based gamed. Though there are swords. There arent any "spells" there is however nano programs. roleplaying wise it is a ton of very very small robots acting out the tasks of the specific nano program. Practicly they are buffs.
the economy is so-so, since its been out for so long the old players(me ^^) have all the money. FunCom tried to solve this problem by flooding in alot of valuable items that sold for TONS of cash in the vendors. the market prices went sky high. Then they took out the valuable items which made things worse. Now 6 months later things flatanded out. lvl 1-100(max lvl 220, lvl 1-200 takes the same time as 200-220, so 1-100 = about 1/6 of max lvl time wise) will be tough, then things gets a little easier.
theres plenty of professions to go around, and you can go different ways with all of them. 1 proffesion can do various things depending of what breed you choose and how you choose to build it.
the learning curve is extremly steep, though its worth it
you can play without the expansions for free till 2007. altough the game is 200 times better with the expansions
well, it is not exactly like that. you can be a trader (you know, buy cheap, travel, sell expensive), a producer (buy blueprints and materials, build staff, sell staff), logistic support... you can even forget about everything else and get involved in the politics and social aspects of a corp, seeking for standings with big alliances that will make your corp have acces to better resources.
you can also be a science man, trying to win the next big tech 2 blueprint (which are not found on the normal market, and hence are worth billions).
and then, on the fighter side, you got many options. you can rely on stealth, on impressive firepower, on speed, on distance... you can even forget about dealing damage and focuss on healing damage to friendly folks, or get into electronic war and screw any offensive device of your enemy.
so, it is not just fighting and mining... and the bad part, yes, it can be boring.
Anarchy-Online is more like scifi-fantasy game. It have strong "magical" elements in game (though they are camoflaged as "nano" technology). These days AO's graphical engine is "bit" outdated.
EvE-online have strong economy and combat is not necessary. There is no professions in EvE. It is open skill based system. Skill training is based to real time (so newbiews are allways going to be newbiews compared to veterans). However, it requires that you group with others if you want to be succesfull in game. It is also PvP game - basicly you can attack against anyone in anyplace (however there are solarsystems that are generally considered safe, because of strong police forces in area). IMHO: Biggest problem in EvE is that there is no real character avatars. Your ship is basicly your only avatar. Result from this is that there is no roleplaying between players.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any MMORPG that have all those characteristics. Most similar incoming game is going to be Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (unofficial FAQ) or maybe Darkfall (if they release it someday...). Both are fantasy games.
