I know..theres probably been a million threads of this question, but I really want to know, is there a non-bias article or advice someone can give me about Everquest2? Cause I'm really at a standoff whether I should get this game or not, I've been looking at it for awile now, and I kind of feel like I need a last opinion.
Me.

Well, www.trisleoftheisle.com is free. This will give you some insight as to how the game looks and relatively how combat works, and also whether your system can handle it and how to adjust your settings. A crappy computer will have a rough time playing EQ2.
I would say if you like MMORPG's, EQ2 is definitely top rung as far as fantasy goes right now. The devs have done so much since launch to make it a better game, and it shows. Play on the Antonia Bayle server if you consider yourself a civilized player. It is the top population and find yourself a good guild. Guilds make the game so much more fun.

What anarchyart said of course and then I would ask myself some questions, try to figure out if the game is right for you.
- Do you like lots and lots of quests ? **yes many people like quests, but what you have to understand is that a large portion of the games "point" is questing, how many quests have you done, have you done this and that one... thats what we're getting at here. If you like the challenge of getting even the smallest quest done, EQ2 is all about that**
- Do you have the computer to handle it ? **post your specs if you have any worry about that**
- What kind of gamer are you, Crafter, PvP'er, PvE'er, Grouper, Soloist ? **Important things to know of course, but you have to put into context of EQ2. It's crafting system is solid but can be a bore for many, yes they've added lots and lots of solo content but a good deal is group based such as quests-writs-raids and the such. This game is very much so based on groupers who like to dungeon crawl and get to new places with raiding built in at the end game. Thats not all of it, but the bigger portion IMO**
- Are you a casual player ? **EQ2 can be ok for casual gamers, but it takes time, so if your the impatient sort, it just may not be for you. Just keep in mind, it will take your longer then 3 weeks to max out a level to 60.**
That should give you a base from where to start, if your still considering playing, do the trial and see if you get a feel for the gameplay, if yes then buy the box and do the 30 days. If you find it's not for you then, at worst you've lost the cost of the box which in my most cases is anywhere between $19.95 to $29.95.
Whatever way you go, best of luck.
Important Information regarding Posting and You
Im gonna hijack the thread for a bit, since Im in a similar situation as the OP. Im an old EQ1 player (started in 98-99) and currently playing Final Fantasy XI (Probably the most group-dependant game available). I think I got a good idea how the game plays but the technical part is beeing the big "?" here, since I got a semi-crappy comp. my setup is:
AMD XP 1800+ (1,53 ghz), 1gig RAM, Radeon 9600XT 128mb
Anyone tried EQ2 on a similar setup? I know I wont be able to play with all the graphical goodies but thats no problem, I just want it to run smooth and look somewhat decent. if anyone got a screenshot from a setup like that Im gonna be oh so grateful.
I think I need to find a new mmo, final fantasy is just taking too much time and soloing is just not an option (so I cant xp if I only got like 1-1.5 hours). EQ2 seems like a good compromise, group focused but with some solo-ability for when you just dont have the time to LFG.

Alas, its like I thought. yeah, I have an upgrade in mind, its just that I dont have the funds yet.
edit: late night, cant type
Yeah, your best bet would be to purchase the game $19.99 retail, and just play it for a month during the free period. I think the Trial of the Isle only gives you a hint of what the game could be like however you get no real mental dimension of how the game is.
I been playing for 2 weeks now and find many things now that were totally lacking in the trial version such as the city venturing experience and seeing a lot of various mobs with different attributes such as the heroic status. I also think that once you get the game you can truly see how your PC will perform in areas with lots of ppl and activity occuring around you.
Another thing, doesnt matter how uber your computer is, just remember that the EQ2 engine was originally built for gaming rigs not yet in existence, so even with my power rig I have to turn down some of the settings.
..just my two cents worth. Hope you enjoy it.
Eve-Online, EQ2, DnL, SWG (Dead), Guild Wars, Anarchy Online, EQ, DAoC, Planet Side, WoW, LOTR, Tabula Rasa.
If was in your situation 9 months ago, I was looking for an alternative because I was tired about wow. So, I tried the trial of the isle (you should do it to see how EQ2 performs in your computer as it is quite graphics and cpu intensive). I liked the trial so I bought the game and I realized it is much better than you can see in the trial, so I am still playing it, and now they are releasing PVP wich is the only think I was missing, so, I think the game is becoming awesome!!
best regards and Happy new year!
Just keep in mind that PvP will be available only on separate servers, so in your case its even better, you can start from scratch on PvP server and enjoy.
On the other hand I can tell you that you will miss something that was on regular servers without PvP. When PvP is everywhere then RP element completely fades. Norrath has nice RP atmosphere if you don't lose your concentration and don't fall into leveling trap. Many people right now with all the expansions and adventure packs released have become leveling machines. They simply level to be able to play new content (expansions). I think its some sort of a new "illness" of MMO but people like you who only start won't catch it, so you safe. Enjoy your game. First few months playing EQ2 will become for you almost best gaming experience in your life, if you are a fantasy gamer. EQ2 is very nice a pretty game. Especially now with all the changes it went through, its almost unforgettable experience.
And no, I am not one of the SoE devs... lol
Speaking about computer power - concentrate your money on RAM, 1GB or even 2GB will make your gameplay much better. Hopefully you have alright CPU - 1.5Ghz is ok, and mediocre video card, just make sure it supports pixel and vertex shaders. Medium class video cards now are VERY cheap. You can buy on e-bay for almost like 100$. Without pixel, vertes shaders you simply won't have reflections, armor surface won't look like metallic, but thats still ok. If you can't buy better, simply disable shadows in options and put game on High Performance mode.
Good luck
P.S. And btw - if you want to see what game looks like, check my movies at eq2guild.com - most of them based on EQ2 content.
One thing I hated about EQ2 was the guild writs we "had" to do.. If people weren't pulling their own weight, then they would get a warning and after 3 warnings u were removed from the guild.. I play games to have fun and do what I enjoy..I don't play to have guild leaders tell us to do writs, how many we need done each week etc.. And I was an officer of one of the top 4 guilds on AB when the game first went live..
Anyway,If you don't like to be told what to do and just like to have fun, perhaps join a guild thats not so demanding..But I must warn u,most of the "good" uber l33t guilds are vry demanding.. Its as If EQ2 is their real life profession and not a game to have fun..

Well then leave that guild then. Geez, there are tons of guilds that are just a joyful community. The one I am is great fun.
I suggest joining a guild as fast as you can. Learn alot, and you will get friends and help when needed.
EVERQUEST 2
--------------------------
Described by MUNK
Its a fun game. Alot of fun actually, I suggest going to the Anotnia Bayle server. Highest Population.
Now, it is a bit harder than WoW. Leveling takes longer and the quests are more complexed. And running the game on anything but medium specs can cause alot of lag during raids for the average computer.
TIPS: If your joining EverQuest 2 for the crafting point of the game DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME. The game has been under rooted by BOTTERS or HACKERS, as a common term.
IF looking to go into adventuring, i suggest making anything but, Guardian, and yea thats about it, cause later on in the game, unless your the Main Tank to a GUILD you will not be useful in raids, no need for 2 Main Tanks.
And that about it, go ahead and take a wing at it man, its a greatly developed game until End game content but hopefully they will fix this. Trail of the Isle is more like World of Warcraft Fast paced and Soloable. Its nothing like the actual game, for the fact that you need at least a partner to progress in a quick way.
Enjoy.
Ya mostly agree, I personaly like the crafting and if you join a good guild you tend to just buy off your own guild mates more often, atleast thats what my guild does. I would pay more for something made by a guild mate then on the open market although ussally they sell it for cheaper. Its a fun game still some bugs they really need to get out of the game but overall a pretty good MMO, Its hard to make an unbiased report on the game.
good way to get into alot of groups is to make a healer though, Ive had nonstop invites hehe but you have to enjoy healing otherwise you'll just get bored. I wouldn't suggest joining the AB server unless you want to Roleplay because thats what its clasified as and if you dont want to RP its only extending the problem the RP servers are already having that they have to many People playing with only a few roleplaying. But thats just IMO I joined a RP server to RP but what ever, do what ever you like, Im on the Lucen D'Lern server
There are many good points and many bad just like anygame it wont please everyone but its a pretty solid game and I would recomend it
