What is the death penalty in CoH/CoV? (And other questions)

What is the penalty for death in these games?

Also if I want to play CoH I have to pay another entire fee to play CoV?

Penalty for death is XP debt (begins at lvl 10). The amount of debt depends on your lvl.

And only one fee for both CoH & CoV ::::02::

Thanks much, how is the game in your opinion? Plenty to do througout? Easy enough to log on and play without sitting around looking for a group? Does gameplay consist of hours of mindless grinding?

Basically I'm a casual player who likes soloing (for less than 1h) and grouping for 2-3h. So for me CoH/V is perfect.

Plenty to do ? For me yes ! For hardcore players, probably no - not enough timesinks for them ::::02::

Talking about grouping, I always group fast, much faster than any other mmo I've played (eq2 and wow) since there no real lvl differences thanks to the sidekick system. CoH/V is xp based & instanciated so it's missions grinding based. If you have a good team and if you set the the missions' difficulty to medium/high, it becomes pretty interesting imo ::::02::.

In shortimage CoH consists of hours of grinding, missions that are exactly the same lvl 1- 50, and yes there will be many times that you'll be waiting for a team (usually not too long) or get kicked off a team depending on what server you're on and what archetype you are (Defenders that aren't healers know what I'm talking about).Visually the game gets extremely repetitive and the feeling of being a super hero hero wears off since may other players and enemies have the same cut and paste powers that you do. There are horrible balancing issues as well, the devs have been constantly nerfing this game for the past year and imho lack originality and depth. Power choices range from totally useless to must haves that will cripple you if you don't get them. There are some nice story arcs, task forces, ArchVillain missions and the like, but you have to be willing to hand over a few hrs to play and patience to build a decent team that's relatively in the same lvl range so that you all get good xp, sidekicking sometimes works but can be suicide for the sidekick. PvP is also unbalanced, depending on your archetype you're either a gimp or a god, not much inbetween. The game takes place in Paragon City, only a couple zones that extend beyond that, but overall not a bad atmosphere.  With that said I did enjoy this game for some time before I realized that they released this game without completion or direction. Awesome character visual customizing, has a very dedicated friendly client base, easy to grasp, easy to play, and can be played anywhere from 20 mins to several hours. If you don't have a lot of spare time to dedicate this is a great game, if you want to be totally immersed look elsewhere. /endrant

The missions have a nice story which evolves a LOT.

They are definitely better than hunting outdoor like folks does in most games.

The above poster want MORE, he doesn't pinpoint a flaw, he pinpoint what he want MORE.  He want MORE diversity in the missions while in other MMOs, you doesn't have that many different missions to start with.

Yes at a point it get repetitive, but I find CoH thousands times less repetitive than EQ was.  And EQ outmatch all other MMOs I tried easily (including WoW, which is an overgrown EQ tutorial).  CoH/CoV is the best/less bad MMO's out there.  Try it, no pointless timesink or activities you doesn't want.

I have over a year of time played in EQ(in game)...and I would recommend this game to folks who are soloers/groupers in a PvE setting, much better than EQ or other games.  I find myself more immerse in CoH than in EQ, ranting about raiding or tradeskilling is a sure way to kill immersion for me.  Considering CoH/CoV only have a few months of time played (2-3?), it just show you how great and strong the game is for me to place it ahead of EQ despite been a superhero setting (which I dislike to start with...yet I love the game).  Immersive has a link to FUN and doing activities you enjoy, everything you curse about a wrong feature (boats, tradeskills, raid, PvP) you are seriously losing any immersive feeling since you are disagreeing with a lame core game design of the game.

Okay thanks for all the good feedback guys, I am currently without an MMO and I have now tried them all.

WoW just did not have long lasting appeal for me.

To get started I picked up a free CoH content disc, but imagine I need to pick up CoV to actually create an accoutn and get going?

After that just install the CoH content to have it.

This would then allow me to create both heroes and villans?

Just trying to get the whole thing clear in my mind before I blow money on yet another MMO. I have gone through too many in the past 2 months since leaving WoW even returnign to check out a few ones from my past. I love the genre, and it is good to get a look at all of the games but it is also costly to learn you do not like them after a brief period of time.

You should only buy CoH or CoV and enjoy the free month!  1 month been stuck either with heroes or villains only is fine IMO, juste pick whichever you want to try first.  (Villains would be my recommendation atm, more players, but CoH is much cheaper to buy)

Then, 1 month later, buy the other, upgrade your account and enjoy another free month!  image

Everything in this game is about combat, so if you want more than combat, you won't be happy.  If combat solo/group wise is all you want, you will be well served!  image

I need action so that should agree with me, I really am more into combat than crafting.

I do role-play, but I tend to do that on the run. I mean that I am not a "sit in town and role-play a victem" type of player. I tend to just stay in character as I go about my battles.

    Again much thanks.
