Sub-classing question

in Final Fantasy XI

Hi all,

I am pretty new to FFXI but I am loving it so far. I have always come down with a bad case of re-rollitis with other games, so being able to change my main job at my whim has been a blessing to me.

I have read around some sites that recommend I pick my sub-job in advance and get it to level 20 so I don't have to worry about it when it comes time to really choose.

The problem I am having is that I cannot decide if I want THF to be my main and RDM to be my sub or vice versa. I'd like to have something to offer groups but mostly I tend to do easy low-xp soloing. I don't mind spending extra time leveling because I am in no rush, but my char is very much cash strapped.

Any suggestions? And yes, I've already tried WoW so please don't try to convert me ::::39::

    Well, first of all, THF and RDM doesnt really match...its a poor combo and you wont get many PT invites as a THF/RDM or RDM/THF.

    For THF, the most common sub is ninja I guess...but thats an advanced job meaning that you need to take one basic job to 30 and then do a tedious quest to unlock it. But I guess you can go as THF/WAR as well, at least till lvl 30.

    For RDM (as with all other mage jobs) the only really viable sub is another mage job. I think WHM is the better one since it will give you higher MND which helps with enfeebles, but BLM will give more INT and a little more MP. Another combo IVe seen is RDM/NIN but thats basically for soloing later on.

    I say play RDM/WHM

    The beauty of this game is that you are not stuck with ONE class. You can go back and play another class later on.

    But, if you want to be a THF/RDM that's cool too man. It's your character, do what you want to have fun.

    I see what you mean by the need for WHM or BLM instead of THF. My thought on the matter was that since RDM is a support caster, a support melee job would add to the versitility. I've switched over to WHM and BLM to see how they play and I am enjoying them. Perhaps not as much as I enjoy THF, but they are deffinately fun.

    Perhaps I'll use the RDM/WHM combo to get to 30 and switch to THF/NIN as was suggested. I'd hate to write out THF completly since it is deffinately my second favorite job by far.

    Thanks again for the tips guys! This game is so very delightfully complicated. I'm glad to be playing a game I can't master in a month.

    dude, i was heading for a MNK/NIN before i quit. i was MNK/WAR before i quit and it was tight. High HP and good def and attack. it was awesome.

    The thought is good, but sadly RDM melee is rather worthless in a XP party since you'll be fighting ITs mainly. I can see RDM melee beeing more useful fighting or soloing easier mobs. Im no expert on the subject since I havent played RDM that much but Im speaking from my group experiences with RDMs (which has been plenty).

    THF/NIN is fun but it'll be much more expensive than a RDM. it seems (at least on my server) that melee equipment is more expensive than mage gear. But if you dont mind digging up the extra gil its no problem image

    Oh, and you'll get PT invites alot faster with RDM.
