Do used copies of FFXI work? (esp PS2)

Will used copies not work because someone else has already used that, um, code (can't remember what it's called). I vaguely remember something about being able to buy a new code to use with an existing copy. Thanks.
Ok, well I see now that I can buy a PC copy and use that Play Online code. Are there any other options I'm missing?

well yea you can buy the code but if you didn't get the used copy from the stroe then you will have to buy the code. Ther are code sellers to, and stores don't take used online games for that very reason you brought up.
