you know, I am really curious as to why the free trial requires a credit card, sure you can say "because after the trial you can subscribe to a subscription" so why not make it pop up with a subscription thing after the trial is over so you can put in credit card information after the trial is over? I will tell you why, because they are hoping you will forget about canceling the trial if you don't like it, and you will be forced into paying a month *or however many month subscription you signed up for) without even wanting to, if you want to.. then you are set, but if you tried the trial and forgot to cancel it in time then you are stuck paying for somethign you dont want. Also now a days with ID theft and all that crap putting in your credit card info willy nilly is a bad idea, I have had an ID theft happen to me a while back when I would play alot of mmorpgs here and there, but now a days to sign up for a trial and put it in before is a stupid idea. I really would suggest making the trial ask for credit card info after the trial is over, so we don't have to be forced into a fee if we don't want one, and 2: we can risk the id theft if we really think the game is good, I am not gonna put my credit card info down on something I want to try and see if it is any good... if you guys have any confidence in your work, you wouldn't make your trial require a credit card before hand. This is just my 2 cents on a crappy tactic, if it's not a tactic then honestly, what is the purpose to require a credit card before you do the trial?

This is a common practice with mmo's in general, and not at all unique to neocron. I imagine the short answer is that alot of people will forget to cancel on time and get charged, but if you asked the dev's they'ld say for convience since if you decide to keep going you don't have to do a thing, just let it charge. The first rule of sales also is to make it as easy as possible for the consumer to say yes. By haveing you put your card # in for the trial its easier just to let it ride than to go thru the hassel of canceling or subscribing once the free trial is over.
bah bs, I for one would like to play the trial hassel free then if I want to input my credit card information for the actual game, either way im putting in my info, im just more likely to get screwed by putting it in before the trial. I really hate these damn corporate schemes to make as much money as possible if the game is good it will make money, if not then let it sink and try a new boat. aah well I geuss I just won't play neocron then. Heard it wasn't that great any ways.. but figured I could atleast try the trial without money being the first thing to deal with, I think this common practice should dissapear as it is a pretty shitty practice for the consumer.. makes people less likely to try out the trial I know most people who see a trial with a credit card requirment usually skip over it if they don't know a whole lot about it... if the game was a huge sucess like WOW, then they could probably get away with it... but I don't see neocron getting a ton of trial gamers with this deal.
this is the same reason i never did the trial for DAOC. Disclaimer at the end say "You must cancel the subscribtion by calling the support number listed."
Also AOL does this crap with those stupid ass 1000 hours free disk you get in the mail.
In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.
We're reviewing our payment provision options but in the meantime, yes you have to provide credit card details (as you do with many other MMORPGs). You don't have to make a call to cancel though, you can do it through the Neocron launcher tool.
N
I put in my credit card details for the Neocron trial, I cancelled and never got billed.
A lot of free trials require you put in card details, it's to prove that you can pay for the game if you choose too.

No Userbar here, sorry to disappoint.
Also keeps people from making a bunch of mule accounts, or at least slows them down.
And why would they do that anarchyart?? The whole point of an MMORPG is that you are rewarded for putting time into the game - repeatedly starting a new character is in most cases an utterly pointless exercise, unless you are trying to take the tiny amount of starting currency you get and transfer it to your main character - something that in most MMOs takes rather longer to raise currency than just playing the game. The idea of it being, "so you can't just do the trial unlimited times" doesn't hold up, because in an MMO that is an utterly pointless exercise and it has little impact even if someone does do it - putting a facility in place that prevents customers from bothering to try your game in order to achieve very little is daft. Also how many MMOs actually verify your credit card for the trial?? I know that Neocron does but Shadowbane certainly didn't when I tried it.
I'd suggest that in Neocron's case the credit-card required for trial will be a contractual obligation with somebody and not a developer decision at all. When you know that you have a troublesome payment facility provider you don't make players deal with them until they have actually bought the game - and Reakktor will realise this.
My take on it is so immature folk don't run amuck with all sorts of trial accounts. Yannow, there'd be no worries if they went way outta lined and got banned, because they'ed have a real account to go back to... unless Neocron does it IP style... that is a whole 'nother animal indeed...
LOL - how long have Reakktor been saying this?!
I had terribly problems with the "free" trial six months ago. To access the "free" trial you need to register with Click2pay. I couldn't do this - kept rejecting my card. When I called my bank they explained that it was because Click2pay had tried to make a $5 cash advance charge on my card (and my bank's minimum for cash advances is $20).
Now why were they trying to make a cash advance charge on my credit card?
No-one knows. Despite getting written confirmation from my bank and passing this along to Reakktor and Click2pay staff, they simply flatly deny it.
At the same time as I was trying to access the "free" trial, many other potential players were complaining of their credit cards being mysteriously rejected. Many other players reported instances of being ripped off by Click2pay's billing.
Meanwhile last week, I receive an email from Click2pay responding to my initial complaint to them made in December last year (still denying the dodgy charge).
Someone pass those people a customer service award!!! :P
I would advise anyone thinking of registering with Click2pay to google Click2pay complaints. And read the Neocron 2 forums and see what players have to say about them there.
