Tell me why I should or should not buy this game. I don't want to hear about Lag, bugs or anything else. Saddly, I've come to the point of accepting sub-par releases. I could go in to this for quite awhile but I've decided, up to this point, to try Horizons and try it knowing it might be a headache at first.
What I really want to know about is the game. I've not found any information in regards to how the game plays and what makes it great. Sure, I know the races and general classes but I do not know anything about what those races and classes can do.
Specifically, tell me about the spell system. I don't care about the cool new spell graphics, I've heard they are nice. But I don't care about that. I want to know about the variety. I'll tout EQ as the best MMORG I've played to date. I just got bored with it after several years of playing. What I really liked about EQ was how a team/group came together. Each class had its role. For example, in FFXI the only kinds of spells are black and white. literally. Damage spells and healing/buff spells. EQ provided players with the ability to work as a unit. The Melee classes took the beating, wizards cast damage spells. Clerics cast healing buffing spells, Enchanters cast crowd control spells, druids were teleporters and had some nice buffs too. Mages and enchanters could deal damage too and had nifty pets.
If someone has a link describing the spell system I'd like to see it. I'm looking for a good MMORG to play and after being nuetral to Camelot, hating SWG and finding FFXI lacking in fun factor, I need something to play.
Thanks if you can help.
Comments
From what I've seen so far, this is a very promising game. The interface is more refined than EQ. Pretty much everything runs off a right-click drop-down menu. The game has a Diablo-esque inventory and equipment window. You have a maximum weight you can hold, plus a maximum size that will fit in your inventory. The equipment window is drag-and drop, similar to EQ's, I guess, except that it's not connected to the inventory window.
Magic, well, I don't have much experience in it. I'm playing a dragon, and I guess the only skill I have so far that could be considered magic would be fire breath. Casting's kinda like EQ--you place the spell on a hotkey, then press the corresponding button. There is no casting meter (for fire breath, anyway). I've noticed a little lag between the time the button is pressed and the actual skill/spell activating, which I'm sure they'll work out soon.
Tradeskills are great in the game. You have to discover formulae, usually given by NPCs, from what I've seen. You scribe them, then you are able to make whatever it was you scribed. Click the "Create Item" button, then you have a list of all the items you need to create the item. There is a slider bar that will allow you to make 1 or more of the item, depending on your materials, at once. There is another slider that will let you attempt to make more of the item, but with a lower success rate.
There are NPCs in the game that will sell your items for you. You can give them up to five items to sell, and they will hold them until they are sold. You set the price you want them to sell for, and they put it up for that price. The NPC takes 8% of whatever the selling price is up front. You will get a message telling you when your item sells, and the money is instantly delivered. If you are offline when the item sells, you will receive the message and money when you log on.
You can "bind" in every town. If you die, you can wait to be resurrected, or you can press the "Recall" button and be teleported back to your last bind spot. The "Recall" button will take you to your bind spot at any time, which is great for if you get lost.
When you die, you get "Death Tokens," which affect your stats temporarily. They fade over time, but if you die again shortly after the other death, you accumulate more tokens, which make a greater impact on your stats.
If you have any other questions, let me know.

I hate the japanese cartoonish characters. This game has that and you look like an idiot when you run.
I hated this game the first 10 minutes of playing it.

Okay, here's a reply from someone who played it for 3 months (beta - release)
One word. Boring. Seriously.
I'd hoped that the release version would be jam packed full of content as promised by Dave Bowman, but the version released was exactly the same as the game I was playing on the last day of beta, bugs and all.
And please don't give these guys props for quick fixes. Most of the bugs you see today have been in the game for the last several weeks.
My ratings:
Combat - boring. Very. Snoozer. Not kidding.
Graphics - Ok. Nothing spectacular, but I don't buy games just for the graphics, so that's not really an issue for me.
Music - Rocks! Very nicely done.
Crafting - best crafting system I've ever seen.
Community - hard to say right now, but the game is designed to build community, so here's hoping.
PvP - ain't got none
Unfortunately, I'm not a crafter (though I play one on T.V. ), so I don't think I'll be hanging with this title. Lots of promise, not much follow-through so far. Maybe I'll check back in 6 months to see if it's any better.

I totally enjoy this game. I noticed the game picked up after level 10 and once I hit 20 I switched to Reaver
(15 Spiritist/20 Warrior) I'm the ultimate tank. It's like EQ's Shadowknight, except more powerful and no pet.
Schonk 22 Reaver - Horizons
Icedeath 50 Ice Wizard - DAoC
Schonk 48 Hunter - DAoC
Artrius Rifleman - SWG
Schonk 20 Monk - FFXI
Schonk 48 ShadowKnight - EQ

Honestly, I regret buying this game. I suppose it's not a bad game if you like EQ or DAOC style fighting, but I was hoping for something new. I'm serious, fighting in this game is incredibly tedious. Attack, use special attack 2, use special attack 3, atack, zzzz.
The graphics are pretty good, and the interface is easy enough to get into. I will say that the music in this game is spectacular, in one city there were even people chanting in the background.
If you're sick of the slow, EQ-style system of autoattack with a few spells or special attacks thrown in, stay away. However, if you're cool with that sort of thing, I'd say this is your game. If you really want a new kind of experience, play as a dragon. It's trickier, but incredibly interesting.
The crafting is far better than the combat, it's a well thought out system and it's easy to sell to other players (there's an npc called a consigner that you use as a middleman, so you don't have to sit in a town and spam on an auction channel or something).
The multiclassing system is also pretty cool. You won't see it as a dragon so much, but biped characters have alot of options to choose from.
So in summary, if you like EQ or DAOC, or even AO style fighting, you'll probably enjoy this game. Even if the system is to your liking but you want something new, Dragon characters are completely different from anything you've ever played. However, if you want something revolutionary or exciting, stay away, you'll grow to hate this game because it isn't anything revolutionary in the combat department.
After playing many mmorpgs in the past like UO, EQ, AC, EVE and most recently FF XI Online. I can tell you that first of all the character models in this game are utterly horrid, specially the animations look awful. I couldnt play my Human Mage in 3rd person because of how bad it looked. Dragons seem to be the only character model they did some serious work on and they look quite well.
As for the game itself it seems pretty similar to other games in therms of combat. Click on mob, attack, use abilites and stand back and watch, nothing special. Soloing seem to be quite viable but I dont see a grouping function so Im not sure how you find groups.
Content wise it seems like they only put alot of work in crafting. The mobs in this game are bland, boring and they use the same model for many, many different kind of mobs. All in all I think I say maybe 10 different mob models in the game, none of them were anything special.
As for endgame content I dont know if there is any. The beta testers Ive asked tell me there is none (except crafting and more crafting). There is no PvP and no high level raids so right now the game seems very empty.
And I can tell you that 2 weeks after the release there are already many people at or close to the level cap so the leveling seem to be almost as fast as Shadowbane. Unless those people used some kind of exploit.
And as for me Im not gonna play it anymore. Game is too boring, too bland and doesnt seem to have any kind of endgame worth mentioning. If they add PvP I will try it again but right now it seems pointless.
My gaming blog
There are boss-mob raids appearing on the forums on a daily basis. Best to leave your opinion to what you know, as your experience is valid...hearsay is not.
But that being said, the game needs more content. One of the features the devs brag about in this game is that they say they can add content on the fly. I can't say I know if that is or is not happening...sometimes it seems like it does, but since I wasn't around at Beta I don't know what is old and what is new.
I do know that I haven't bothered powerleveling myself up high enough to where content was an issue. I can easily go to a dozen camps with different mobs at the levels of my various characters and either group or solo. Looking for a group in this game is extremely easy...the player search interface is very, very good.
I've only been in beta of Horizons, so something might have changed since then. But, judging from posts by the players on IGN and Tazoon forums, game is still almost the same as it was in the beta, which means - no content whatsoever. At lvl 5 you're fighting lvl 5 magots and zombies, at lvl 20 you're fighting lvl 20 magots and zombies.... Combat is click and forget, there's no dungeons, magic system is simplified as it can be and even crafting system which is so hyped is mindlessly boring in reality.
Horizons were like owning a Ferrari - but without an engine... it looks damn nice, but it doesn't go anywhere.
Depape
Judging by your posting Depape you havent played since beta. That would lead me to feel that you have no backing in your comments. The game is great. Content seems to be much more than the beta testers that were blowin smoke before it came out, the fighting is akin TO ANY OTHER MMORPG (EQ,AC, etc), so there is nothing inherently bad about it, and the crafting has surpassed the hype that it was given. This game has lived up to my expectations without question. Take it from someone who is actually playing the released product.

Agreed, the game is great, content is nowhere near as bad as alot of people are trying to make it seem. Combat is about the same as any other mmorpg on the market currently, the crafting system blows any other crafting system out of the water, including SWG's. AE has been pretty damn good about listening to the customer base and fixing problems/issues we've addressed. They may not be the most communicative on the boards (Gale in particular since he is the community manager or whatever) but they're getting stuff done. Overall great game imo.
