I started playing in Oct 1999. AC was my 1st MMORPG and since 1999, i have pretty much tried every new mmorpg and unfortunatly i havent found one as good as AC was in it's best years 1999-2002.
Best AC memories :
-When i met my 1st patron, i think he's name was Shadow Rider. He was level 30 which at this time was insanely high. I remember i was like level 15.
-When my patron gave me a mattie coat, it was the best gift ever.
-When my patron first took me in the Qalabar moutain where i saw for the 1st time Lugians (i was so scared) and when i got 1 hit killed by a montain rat.
-Trying (Very crowded place) to hunt Water Golems, Azure Gromnies on the Eastham Beach.
-Trying to sell stuff in Arwic and being constantly portal stormed because too many peoples there.
-First time i hunt/kill a great mattekar and found a hide.
-Getting the Green Mire Cuirass
-Hunting with TONS of other peoples in the Lugian Citadel (Man this was such a great time)
-Getting my 1st mote, cracked shard, SIK, back then it was worth a lot.
-Trying to figure out spell tapers. Some might find that tedious, but back then it was quiet an accomplishement.
-The Shadow Invasion (The best event i ever experienced in ANY mmorpg)
-First time i runned to Fort Tethana, i was so proud of me.
-Getting my GSA after MONTHS of collecting.
I'm forgeting many others, but these are the tops one for me.

What jumps to mind right away is when the Gaerlan Citadel quest patch released. I did it in the first week it was out and it was an awesomet quest. Rolling balls of doom!!!!!!!!!! Nothing like this quest it in any MMORPG since. Todays dev's have everyone believing kill task are quest.
Also hunting in the Lugian Citadel brings back fond memories. Tons of people and good times many moons ago.
The first time I ran out of the area of Holtberg and ran into the Obsidion Span ( a big bridge) I was very impressed. (remember this was the first MMORPG I ever played and there where only like 3 on the market at the time)
Just wandering around and asking myself "I wonder there this goes?" No MMORPG has really ever been able to capture that feeling of true exploration that AC did. (in the early days at least) It was one giant open world.
The first time I saw Qualabar in the days when there where portal storms and everyone had to actually sell their stuff face to face.
Lugian Citadel was great fun! Loads of people all the time.
Standing on that rock outside Fort Tethana with the rats in it and picking off Umbris Shadow with my Composite Bow that took me freaking forever to make(Dark Revanants were tough!!)
This dungeon that I can't remember to this day that had tons of different kinds of golems that dropped motes like crazy. Loved that!!
Standing at Ayan Baqaur trying to trade SIK's, Motes and clothes with level VI spells on em.
The quests to get the atlan stones and the thing that removed them. Great quests!!
Getting a portal tie to the Obsidian Plains and staying right by the portal so I didn't get kilt.
When Diamond Golems came out, they were impossible to take down!
In my young days there was that fort outside Hebian-To that was full of mosswarts I think that was great fun!
My all time favorite memory was when I first started the game and I found a group of people to just go explore and see what we could find. There was snow all over the place and the sky was gorgeous(AC always had a cool sky) We just ended up at some house in the middle of nowhere lying on the ground looking at the sky with the snowflakes coming down. No other game sparks nostalgia like AC in it's early days!
Before tuskers were the primary avenue of experience I often fought lugians. I hunted anywhere from the lone lugian outpost on the road leading into Qalabar to the Lugian Citadel not far away. When I got higher level, I also fought in the high-grade corizite (sp?) mine for a long time. I hunted gigas to extas, and there were plenty to go around. My highest character (legit - no xp chain, no test server) was level 90. He was a sword character on Harvestgain named Aleksis. My first character was Adreal on Thistledown. Aleksis had some pretty sweet amuli armor that had been tinkered 6 times to al 360 I think. It was a purple amuli coat, and I had golden yoroi (sp?) leggings with golden sollerets and golden gauntlets. I often didn't wear a helm where I hunted because you didn't need one - one of the tusker dungeons on an island.
By the way, Unvi, what year did you join AC1? I know the sky of AC has changed over the years. Before it never used to have the rippling colors in the night sky like it does now.

I joined soon after Beta. That was 2000?
Well, I know that I joined the adventure one or two months after the game first came out. That was back in '99, so you probably joined around the same time too.

This is a later AC1 memory for me...
I was waiting to talk to the Golem to start Aerlinthe, I think it was in Reservoir. I was perched in a safe spot above where the Golem spawned until a fellow by the name of Hobounderthebridge (or something along those lines) came along. I met him before and had problems with him, I knew he was going to try to start the quest even though I was there first. I was killing monsters while I waited and when I tried to return to the perch at one point, I missed the jump. I ended up having to start all over and run all the way back down through the dungeon to the Golem. My timing was bad and I missed the spawn, he started the quest.
So, I wasn't going to take this laying down. I decided to jump him at the skeleton town and finish the quest. I waited for him to show up. He ended up bringing a group of people. I followed them through the Keep. When we were nearing the end I ran straight to the Lady and killed her.
But wait, I didn't take the items. I simply left a note on the corpse saying something like "DONT MESS" and left the dungeon.
My wife and I started AC kinda late. It was out very first MMORPG and we didn't know what to expect. We'd gotten some free trial online so had no real reference material to go on. By the time we really got in game the Gaerlan/Martine story arc was in full bloom when we started. I remember being <lvl 5 and seeing the globals about Asheron and Elisa (sp) in this town or that.
- I remember hunting cows outside of Yaraq. My wife, a new found friend, and I were all <lvl 5 at the time and we didn't have anything really good, and the cows seemed like good XP at the time.
- Getting buffed for the first time. Again being new and not knowing about these I was like WTH is going on.
- A friend and I decided one time that we try and circumnavigate Dereth. Was pretty fun.
- Getting (a wearing for awhile) an Imbued Helm and Shield of the Simuracalan(sp), Quiddity Sword, and Blue dyed GSA.
- The Gaerlan citadal quest. Man that place was fun. People called me crazy cause I figured out the timing on the rolling balls of death and could run back and forth with no real problems.
There's probably ton others, I just can't remeber right now. Someone else said it well, no other game thus far has come close to the open feeling (atleast for me) that AC had.
People were so stupid, the balls didn't move that fast. The real fun part was trying to run up an melee the door and run back before the ball rolled down.
Edit: OMG look at that, the idiot in my previous story died in my screenshot Amazing I remembered his name right.
I remember fighting the Ancient Olthoi Queen or something like that. Big mama - bunch of lesser but very powerful minions around. Olthoi eggs everywhere. In the winding hallway to the main room where she was, there were acid traps that did a ton of damage to you if you weren't well equipped. I remember seeing corpses lying around the narrow passages (mostly toward the Queen's room). Some were littered around the acid traps.
The fighting was hard and lagged like crazy for a while on my comp and connection. When it was all over, I talked with other people in the slain Queen's room and just messed around. I ran around collecting olthoi eggs from the ground. When everyone else left, it was eerily quiet (forgive the clich

Does anyone remember Subway? I remember my first patron taking me through the hallways, I was so young back then, and I was like wooooow sooo cool! Look at all the portals.
And of course, who could forget Darktide. Darktide was IT. Sure it was brutal, but it was fun as hell.

I remember when I first entered Asheron's Call in 2000; it was my first MMORPG. I was so amazed how they managed to get thousands of players to exist in a huge world. I remember starting just outside of Holtburg in the woods, and I saw a player run by me for the first time. I thought to myself; "could it be the computer"? Eventually, I asked him a question and the person responded. Immediately I felt a sense of awe overwhelming me. Even though I only played 5 minutes into the game(excluding the create a character) that moment made me realize that I was in for an adventure.
Had a friend come over and play the next day. Immediately he talked his dad into purchasing the game. Experiencing Asheron's Call with a close friend was awesome, especially when you're both newbies to the MMORPG genre. Simply exploring was an adventure, because the world was seamless, and it felt unless.
I remember having a mule outside of Holtburg and I'd dropped items near the marshlands. I think we've all experienced running across another player picking up your items during muling transfers.
I forget the small outpost out in the woods some where around Eastham. But it was surrounded by Banders, and if you hit one all the mobs in the area ran to that spot. I was with three other players who just started playing and we stumbled on to it. Immediately after we killed the first Bander, they all flocked to our location. "Run upstairs to the second floor of the outpost, we'll be safe there". I think we hunted there for an hour with our bows.
I remember finally getting to a high enough level to hunt on the Eastham beach. The same guys who were with me during the Bander incident joined me for some exploration. Going further down the beach we ran into a Shadow. We all heard wicked things about them since it was right around the sametime Turbine was doing the Shadow invasion. Simply attacking that dark creature, I honestly felt more like a hero then a grinding fool.
But what sticks out in my head the most is when the Hopeslayer, Bael'zharon descended on Dereth. Two major towns were destroyed, the sky turned red, and the waters were bloody. We use to stand on the hill besides the river at Cragstone to watch Bael'zharon and Asheron duke it out. Asheron would say; "stand back citizens of Dereth". I remember the final battle within the Cathedral; it lasted 15+ hours but it was well worth it - especially when you get a stick with Bael'zharon's head on it.
I Remember keeping a Lockpicker at Hub so I could pick the darn door! (ROFL)
Most Memorable Moment would have to be when Arwic was destroyed, and Overburdened mules loged in and fell to there death, spent hr's watching this laughing my *** off!!! (mine fell to 3hp and survived)
Miss my Matty Coat, GMC, Gertahs Dagger *poor Gertahs*....
Dev's doing weddings, my first one, and no home then to go to lol
AC was my first of many MMOs and i still love it the most. I remember the first time i logged in and all these people were running around saying "Zojak Quaguz" iwas yelling "What the hell does that mean?!" LOL i thought it was some gamer code i was supposed to know.
Also hanging out at Teth at 6am after playing all night. Just talkin to friends and trying to jump onto the chimney tops.
Dieing in the bottom of a dungeon and spending all night trying to get my corpse, 2 corpses, 3 corpses, 4 corpses..... Somehow those are "fond" memories now :P
Which FF Character Are You?
"Zojak Quaguz" iwas yelling "What the hell does that mean?!" LOL i thought it was some gamer code i was supposed to know.
Lol. I remember when my patron and I were researching spells. He could tell whether I had the right spell by what my character was reciting. Since each spell has its own chant and different spell components, alone, have their own chants it made for interesting testing of spells.
Dieing in the bottom of a dungeon and spending all night trying to get my corpse, 2 corpses, 3 corpses, 4 corpses.....
I remember helping people with their corpses and getting help with mine from time to time. One guy kept on dying in the Lugian Excavations dungeon in the south and I and another guy just told him basically to be selfish and stay behind us and not help us, because whenever he tried to be noble or the like, he got a lugian's hollow axe to the back or a boulder to the face. Mind you, he had lost his equipment I believe and was half naked already. The lugian city, though, was very beautiful when it first came out and was a heck of a sight to see. I remember standing on the walls of this huge stone fortress in the winter and seeing the sun in the distance. I think there was also a huge white mattekar there or something in the center of the fortress.

AC was my 1st MMORPG as well. I joinned it in beta from a disc given by a magazine. I immediatly fell in love with MMORPG. I always dreamed of a game where many player could co-exist at once and AC answered my call.
I begin the game meeting my First patron "CPRman" in beta and the beta ended with a bang. I started right on the day of retail and played several month and found my old beta patron "CPRman" again. My first retail patron was MIA and i went under one of the most famous player of AC ... you guess it. Animal was my patron for sometime when he was under Gargmel. Then i changed to go under CPRman later. After PKing CPRMAN with an assassin i hire during an event, he went so mad and decide to kick me right off. (But we are keep contacts on ICQ and even i still talk to him once in a while).
Then i re-roll and played my OG archer and met a new patron who played games with me for 6 years after AC.
AC1 also introduced me to 2 great gaming community that i had been playing with these years After i left Ac1. Call of fate and TOSH, which i been playing with in other games like FFXI and WoW.
Well, I have to admit, AC1 is one of the best game i ever play and it changed my view to gaming world. I now play nothing other then MMORPG (i was such a PS1 fans until AC1 and i give up on console afterward)
none
I play AC since day one. What fun!! I still keep in touch with the players I met 6 1/2 years ago.
Great fun. We were a mage, swordsman, archer and a Axe guy. The axe guy accidently used a mana stone on something he wanted to keep. It made him so angry he quit. Now we have a "are you sure" window.
My 1st patron was Power. He did absolutly nothing for me. LOL Julia Child was in the game then. She was very sweet. I learned all the spells thru level 6. I really disliked scrolls when they came in.
My first vassal was a archer charactor. I took him to the drunken madman's tower. He could shoot mobs from the safty of the tower. He never came down. I would bring him his arrows and there he stayed. GOOD GRIEF... so much to see and he stayed atop the tower. He quit logging in when he reached level 20ish.
My development was slow as I never bought anything or had someone buff me. I used what I looted and buffed myself. I didn't get creature until level 80. THEN WOW... started shooting right up.
Man, oh man do I have vivid memories of my AC days, the moments passed so fast and so much fun was had back in the day. It was worth every penny times 10 atleast.
I started in the very early days of AC in January of 2000. I remember buying EQ and AC the same day at the same game shop. I played EQ first since it was more popular and AC was a brand new game at the time, but I figured since it was made by Microsoft, and MS had made another game I loved.. Age of Empires..that it HAD to be good. And I was right. EQ just didn't quite hook me after an hour or two of play. So I installed AC hopeful of greener pastures. And I was soooo impressed with the graphics when I first played.. OMG. I think I had a IBM Thinkpad 266 Mhz at the time. Heh. And I couldn't believe how damn gorgeous the graphics were to me, Much of my first few hours I simply spent running around the huge world exploring and amazed at how pretty the world was, especially the sky and the sunsets and moving clouds!
I always liked the challenge of PvP and being upset about Trammel hitting my first mmo, Ultima Online had made me immediately opt for the "tougher playing experience" of the Darktide server. I randomly picked Al-Arqas as my starting town, and my first character was in for a very rough intro to the world. Heh. And I enjoyed it. It ALWAYS motivated me to go out and level up when I was PK'ed. I would go to town to buy mage components or to sell all the BS I couldn't use and always try to sneak into the town of Al-Arqas, very watchful of any red dots on my radar!
Some things I remember well about trying to play an "anti-pk" noble character in Darktides PK-flooded world back in the early days:
I remember reading the owners manual and somehow thinking that a sword/cooking spec'd template would be uber as hell (I read this and planned it while the game was installing, heh). So when someone stopped me and told me I was gimped to the max when I was level 13, I felt offended. I told him how many hours it took me to get to level 13 (ofcourse many hours were spent simply exploring and experimenting with magic spells etc). he laughed at me and told me getting to 13 was a piece of cake. Man I was so pissed but somehow i knew he was probably right. So then my second character was the almighty life-spec'd mage template. Started with Life spec'd and War magic I think, and I had to earn Mana Conv, Item, and Critter, getting my critter at level 50 if I recall correctly.
Seeing the uber elemental weapons used on me by other pkers at a very early level. I was thinking WOW how did that level 6 get such a cool weapon. I was prolly like level 4 or 5 and he was 6. I remember I kept trying to kill him so he'd drop the frost sword and I died like 4 times to him before I finally learned my level 2 frost protection and increased my health with my earned exp. I beat him and surely enough, he dropped the uber frost sword! Ofcourse I couldn't use it being a life mage, but figured since I hadnt seen such a uber sword yet, that it must be worth a TON of money to someone! Heh. He came back with a level 8 buddy and destroyed me and got his weapon back, lol.
I remember having to constantly go to town to buy some components, and finally decided to drastically increase my mages STR just so I didn'y have to risk coming back to town every 15 minutes.
I have very fond memories of my first patron in the Anti-PK allegiance, "House of Blackrock" back then. I was so insanely fond of him! I was only level 9 when I joined and he was 26! Man he was the roxxer! I met several other allegiance members and we all made a home out there in the desert at the South Al-Arqas lifestone. Bloods would constantly come out and harass us. I'll never forget all the times we called all of our allegiance to our home LS to try and take down some level 80 or 100 Blood at a time when I was level 20 or so and our highest level guy was like 45.
Making my very first real friend in AC, we spent soooo much time PvE hunting together and leveling up. We always seemed to be right about the same level, never getting more then 1 level ahead of each other. He was a UA template and my magic buffs and his tanking seemed to complement each other so well. I'd cast life spells, war spells and debuffs during battle and he'd slash away. Then he'd come back needing healed and rebuffed and I'd cast Life-to-Mana spells so I could keep casting/buffing and he'd use his uber healing kit skills to heal my life I had converted to more mana. Such teamwork. Heh. Those early level spells and buffs used to wear off sooo fast though.
Being sad in real life to the point of almost real tears falling the last day that friend played the game some year or so later. We had spent soo many hours playing together and made such a great team. We had so many long talks and jokes and laughs in AC's virtual world that we were real soild friends that prolly would have made one of those "count em on one hand" life friendships had we ever met in the real world. He was a great guy and was gonna get married and didn't want his online AC life to interfere with his new marraige. I understood him completely, but it didn't ease the pain of seeing my lengthy AC friendship coming to an end that night. I remember thinking that in a matter of a few months, I'd eventually see him come back into the world and surprise me somehow. I KNEW he loved the game as much as I did. I hoped for a long time he'd come back so we could hunt more evil mobs and prick Bloods together. He never did. Time passed and I made new friends in the AC world, but none that really compared.
I remember when our allegiance got into some HUGE fight that was all over our forums and I think it was all based on the fairness or unfairness as some saw it of our allegiance exp pass-up flow. We seemed to always be breaking from our patron and re-swearing to some new patron to try and "maximize" the exp pass-up. Honestly, I cannot recall the exact reasons for all the fighting and bithing. I just knew that I hated it. I broke off the allegiance a couple times not wanting to deal with the BS drama. Someone always taled me into coming back. All-in-all it was a good allegiance made up of big-hearted people who were really cool. Eventually we broke up into two anti-pk allegiances. And I broke off and stayed with my "better" friends of the allegiance and we formed our new clan called "Rage of Angels".
Not long after that however, my own personal life started taking priority and my game time dwindled and I left the game I loved for several lengthy breaks from the game.
So many little elements of the game I cannot even being to list. My first house when houses were introduced. I remember spending like 5 hours just looking for a damned Timber sirlen claw or whatever it was. I killed so many of them, but PKs were also out there PK'ing like mad men. Seemed like every Timber beast I killed just didn't have the claw I needed to claim that house!
...Hunting shadows and fragments trying to get my set of GSA. ...Killing my first PK character who was level 55 when I was level 26 - Oh man was I pumped about that! ...Getting my first ever set of GSA. Fellow friends we definately envious, as back then the sets were going for like $400 a set on eBay! My first time I ventured into the Direlands to hunt, what fun! Woooo! Great hunting for a level 50-ish life mage! I also remember trying to take down a diamond golem when they were new. They were impossible!
I also remember playing the night after 9/11 of 2001 and seeing some noob toon named "Osama Bin Laden" at our LS south of Iraq. Many of my friends and others were killing him constantly and bitching at him. Heh. I remember I simply didn't give him the attention it seemed he was craving and I just reported him. A couple of minutes later, he vanished to not come back again.
Man, those were the days. If any of you played AC Darktide or were in or knew Rage of Angels or House of Blackrock definately say "Hi".
