Hello all,
I have a question about role playing servers. In some games like EQ and Horizons you have specific role playing servers. As I am quite new to mmorpg's I was wondering what exactly the difference is between a regular server and a role playing server.
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers,

Just a place where everyone who wants to roleplay can be organized all onto one server. Basically, if you want to roleplay, and be with other people who do, this kind of server is for you, if not, thier are probably moreregualr servers for you to play on. I dont think that thier are any other differences
The real answer to this question lies in the answer to this question.
Have you ever played a pen and paper RPG with a group of friends?
If the answer is yes, then, this is what you do on a roleplay server, only the computer is the GM, and and you get to play in the world with the rules created by whichever company created the game in question.
If the answer is no, then, you might not really know what the RPG stands for in MMORPG, or even CRPG for that matter. MMORPGS and CRPGS are not true roleplaying games unless the player goes out of his way to make it such, hence the special server for people who want to do that so they can get together and "roleplay" their character. Also if you dont mind stepping into your character evey now and again, they are usually a great place to get away from the l33t d00dz.

I have a character on EQ's roleplaying server that I haven't played in a long time. When the server was first introduced, it had a slightly different ruleset than the others, such as a limited shout range, and auctions only in city zones, in an attempt to make it seem like a more plausible world environment. As opposed to standard EQ servers, few items were "no-drop" as well, meaning most items that can't be traded or sold on other servers CAN be on this one. Some of the rules have been changed to be more similar to other servers, such as removing the range limit on shout to facilitate communication. The tradeable gear is still in place from what I hear though.
From what I remember, a fair number of people attempted to roleplay, and I did encounter fewer d00ds, but they were certainly there, and a few of them came on just to grief the roleplayers. I've heard that since most items are sellable, the server also attracts more of the eBay crowd, though I'm not sure what that assertion was based on.
At the time I was there, the population was very low. A lot of people didn't like the limits that were imposed. It was difficult to find groups as a result. The upside, if you like crafting, is that the best way to get armor and weapons (pre-newbie armor days) was to get to work and smith them yourself. Kind of cool in a way. I had a 13th level warrior with a 120 in smithing, wearing all banded armor and wielding a two handed sword he made himself. Not bad.
