you know, i'm not aware of any development costs when creating a mmorpg, or any game at all, but whoever flamed the idea, just is fed up with "negative waves" (godly expression). If Stargate believes he can make that, then why not give him good luck along the way? it's called an ideal, who dares to contradict phylosophy should be imprisoned 'life goes by ideals and the way men develops them", and to give a more actual example, look at the pair of students who created Darwainia, a VERY simple game which turned to be VERY liked among the public, even liked enough to be bought by Valve. So, good luck with any project you intend to do Stargate

I have a tree, a tree that's in my garde, but my garden's too small for the tree, so the tree is in my house, that means i don't have a house .... who am i anyway?

    Thanks :)
  • Hiya Stargate!

You CAN do it...IF you have the talent. Quality MMOGs do cost alot to make $20-30 million (it's always been my contention that in reality MMOGs should cost $60-100 million, to produce a truly top quality product).

I urge you to go check out Project Offset...see what three guys can do!. Make sure you watch the demo clips!

If quality MMORPGs are games like WoW...

Then, if we can avoid quality by spending less money we should be happy.

    The future: Adellion
Common flaw in MMORPGs: The ability to die casually
Advantages of Adellion: Dynamic world (affected by its inhabitants)
Player-driven world (beasts won't be an endless supply of mighty swords, gold will come from mines, not dragonly dens)
Player-driven world (Leadership is the privilege of a player, not an npc)

Some consider Runescape to be a graphical mud... it was a mud first, after all. I like the idea of young'uns trying their hand at muds, text-based or not. I did that ages ago and the skills and knowledge I picked up is priceless. Of course, I never did anything with it because I'm not the least bit interested in creating an MMO, but if I had wanted to, I would have had a much easier time of it. Today, you can go to university and specifically choose to study game design. Cool, no? I bet that would be a great place to form a team, too.

If you're looking to be the next WoW, you might end up a wee bit disappointed. if you're looking for the fun of it, the learning experience and the possibility of entertaining some people... why not give it a go? Teppy seems to have done pretty good with ATITD. No huge production team involved there and I think I read that he is able to make his living doing it.

Next alot of people talk about paying people to help make their game. Thats not needed. Alot of the time you'll find people who just want to work on an MMO, I mean without even asking someone came to me and asked to join my team just today, for no pay. For those ho do want to get paid a good opinion is giving them a percent of whatever the game brings in. Or if its made by a group of friends its free lol. But alot of the time unless you do have the cash to hire professionals a newer modeler can be as good as a pro since in an MMO you want a low poly count so its not hard to make a model with a low poly count. Its when its a high poly count you need the pros. Then comes textures which a good photoshop user can make for you, and theres millions of free textures on the net if you don't mind using one instead of making it yourself. Last is the music, which is harder to find, but try searching the forums, and eventually youll find someone. But alot of the time that part can be left until the end. But like I said alot of people if they really are interested they'd take a cut of the profits most wont ask to be paid upfront.

You aren't suggesting people should work for free now are you?  It cost 'alot' of money to hire full time employees.  Think abou it.

It's nice to have volunteers on a project or people who just want to gain the experience of having worked.  Eventually they will want to get paid by somebody for their work and commission only jobs won't be their first choice believe me.  Commissions are nice, but if the game loses money, they still need to eat.

Another point is, does Blizzard need 15/month per subscription to keep WoW up and running, no.  Your post actually makes my point.

Blizzard could probably get by easily with a subscription cost of $5/month and still turn a nice profit. The 15/month is just greed on their end.

For your first topic I just wanted to say I know what ya mean about commision. I mean of cource some people would want to be paid evetually, ut then again dont we all lol image. Alot of the time if you do get those types of people who just want eperience chances are they'll just be working in their spare time. I of cource wouldn't ask someone to make a job out of working on a project if they were just getting a cut lol that wouldn't be fair and it would put ALOt of pressure on the dev's to make sure nothing goes wrong with it. As you know when you start feeling the presuure is usually when things go wrong lol. But like I said alot of the time you'll get people to do it in their spare time. Alot of the time its younger students who enjoy doing it and would love a chance to make quite a few bucks and the potential to hit it big time lol.

Also I agree with your opinion about these games that ask for 15$ a month. Its quite alot seeing as how many members they have... I mean say a good server would cost about 200$ a month, then lets say they get 50 servers. THat means their paying aprox. 10k a month, and that means 666 players would need to pay for WoW. Seeing as blizard has more like over a million players lol, they make about 1.5mill to their team each month. Lets take aways 5k (it would in reality be less) for equiptment, since each month they keep the same programs and computers, and such. This means they have 14985000$ to spend on workers and advertising. Lets say 20,000$ for advertising, which is kinda a joke since they dont advertise very much as is since everyone already talkin about them lol. So thats 1.49k to split between 200 employes which is about 74k per month, then subtract about 10k for rent, taxes etc... per person, and you have yourself a employee getting paid around 64k a month!!! image, I dont know about you but I think thats some well paid workers lolol. But chances are Blizzard keeps some of that locked up. But theres just an idea of how much cash they make....

I plan to ask between 5-10$ per month when my MMO is first released to pay for server costs because of how few people there will probably be the first few months. I personally and I know alot of other developers who also think 15$ a month is asking alot.

To be fair, I have heard that WoW has almost 3 million paying subscribers.  Now not all those subscribers pay 15/month.  Those of us in North America are blessed with that price.  In other parts of the word, china let's say, they are paying 50% or even less per month.
