For those of you who want to know, DDO will go live on February 28th,2006.. Perhaps now would be a good time for MMORPG.com to change the current release date to the official one announced by Turbine a couple days ago..
Anyone who is interested in reading the official announcement you can go to www.ddo.com and check it out for yourselves..

It's unfortunate they are going ahead with this travisty.
I had hoped things would change but it seems not... ah the day we wished for a online version of D&D and we get this piece of junk.
I had really hoped alpha/beta would improve the game style and direction but it did not.
ug.

I agree with you 100% Celestian. I'm surprised this game is going forward.
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.
I can understand what Turbine was trying to do.But not giving us a world to explore and absolutely no freedom to do as you wish really disappoints me.. I had hoped the game would be exactly what D&D.. A roleplaying adventure where you the player chooses his or her own destiny..
DDO is just a online rpg similar to NWN.. I had hoped for more,,alot more than what it is. How disappointing

It really is to bad....I allready cancelled my Pre-Order. This game is such a let down. DnD has always been about exploring a world and trying to make your mark upon it. Where they get off saying one city in a relatively new DnD setting qualifies as DnD Online I'll never know.
Oh well, there will be people play it..but I hope they don't expect a long term committment...It might be fun the first 20 - 30 instanced door quests in a non-lving dead city but that will get old quick.
Good luck to all that play it...won't be me...
what a piece of crap. I was actually looking foward to this game.
Another MMORPG disappointment. POS

I actually enjoy playing the game. That being said, I don't think the game is going to please everyone out there. (this coming from the fact that I am the first positive post on this subject).
I am not worried about the 1 city system they currently have, I've met a lot of nice people in game and hope to see them in release.
As for the game itself, it's the first one I've played in a long time with an interesting loot system and combat system. (reminds me of Asheron's Call 1) Just gotta see what I am going to get from this quest in terms of loot, etc!
Just my 2 cents!
No bitchers.
At least its good to see some people enjoy DDO for what it is.. In a way,you have to tip your hat off to Turbine...They are trying to cut down on all the boring exploring, traveling from A to B which could take a half hour or so,then say u die,you gotta run all the way back to retrieve your corpse and try again.. But to take away the freedom to explore completely along with no implementation of any crafting system, housing, etc, that is a mistake imo..
Hopefully in time the Devs will see this and decide to implement other towns, cities in which u could travel to and actually get a feel for the world.. Because at this currnt time, there is no real feeling of being taken away from reality and into what DDO is.. Basically, its nothing great how everquest was.. From the first moment of logging inand hearing the fantastic theme song,to traveling to new palces, fighting new mobs, etc I always found myself escaping from reality and enjoyed living on norrath.. I just don't feel it with DDO.. Its to easy..U talk to a npc, walk a few feet and enter a warehouse, sewer, graveyard etc in a matter of seconds to complete quests...
A MMORPG without a world to explore is just a empty MMOG..

this game will be wast of money and time it is nothing like PnP D&D it only holds the name. all of you who have not played it will be bored very fast and dispointed.
There is no game wrolds everything is instanced and you have to repeat the same quest mant times to level.
Hi Oakthornn,

That's part of the game design pyschology i suspect is catered more so for the "casual gamer". Besides although "Instancing" came about initially via Anarchy Online. It's still rather new or starnge to those of us who've been conditioned to explore a more so static world level design. To us it may feel rather cheap to go overboard with so much Instancing. Especially cutting out the need on travel time be it on foot or mount or a magical portal spell.
As long as all this Instancing gives a sense of atmosphere and immersion than the dev's won't worry too much about it.
I just hope this isn't another mmorpg broken game design treadmill ala SWG.

Do you really think the Devs hold that power? Or is it their bosses and thier bosses' bosses?
The dev hold much, but they doesn't hold that per say. Yet, if someone on earth is able to put sense into WotC, I expect them to be the most likely to succeed.
But those devs are not even holding true to D&D on many aspects. Can't blame them. It is a job and they do what they need to do to keep the job and get it as best as it can. Most of them are vaguely fans of D&D at best and it shows. Often I feel they are more EQ fans than D&D.
I don't think I would do better than they are with their bosses, but on the design choices they made for the fans...the XP, the solo and the raiding mistakes are quite enormous and oblivious to the existant fanbase. I doesn't understand how a logical dev can come up with those choices, it is completely ignoring the fanbase. Sometimes I wonder if the Xbox version of Baldur's Gate won't be closer to the D&D feeling...and this is not good.

Hi All,

Actually in a backwards way we are the ones who hold the power collectively to sink or swim a MMO. Meaning how the gamer market reacts to the retail sales. Especially in the first 90 days or quarterly period after it goes Gold. After that it may fall upon whomever is their chief bank roller. Either the game publisher or the "Wizards of the Coast" / Hasbro perhaps.
Another thing i believe the dev's have been restrained in game design by the 3.5 Edition Rules of D&D Pen & Paper rule set. However this aspect of the realm is unexplored territory giving them artistic flexibility in visuals or what not.
