If anyone can point me in the right direction i'll appreciate it. I played Ultima Online for a long time, for me everything was done right. However I have since moved on, played Neocron and City Of Heroes but want to get back to a fantasy game.
I have been looking at the ones currently on the market, World Of Warcraft, Everquest 2. But the opinion on this games from the comments on this board are so split it's hard to know what to do. Some say they are the best ever, some say the worst!
I want:
-A fantasy based game
- Something long term, I don't want to hit max level in a short time.
- A game with tradeskills, crafting.
I have also been looking at those coming out, some look promising in regard to what I want but only The Chronicle is out soon, the rest are way off.
So any advice please, is there one already out that can satisfy my needs or should I wait for The Chronicle?
Thanks for you time.

Ill tell ya what Im not trying to hate on WoW but if your looking for a good crafting system EQ2 is much better. Although there are no houses like UO which I do miss, but there are Inn Rooms where you can place some of your items. There is nothing in WoW.
WoW is a good game IMO but its crafting system is very limited. to me EQ2 took the crafting to the next level past UO. But you can give both a try as they both have free Trials. Unlike UO though you dont just create a crafter you create an fighting class Mage-warrior what ever then you make a crafter like a side class.
Dont listen to the people that come on and bash either one of the games unless they sound like they actually have a point. There are so many SOE and Blizzard bashers its just funny.
I was a GM Minner, Tinker, Blacksmith along with my GM Mage so I do like crafting I have always found it to be fun and WoW didnt really create a great Crafting system but if you like PvP wow at this point is much better although EQ2 is now going to get some PvP servers which should be nice. There are some very good points about wow to though but one of my major problems is it just had to many people that would make it to level 60 in 2 weeks or a month which was just to fast for me and It took the fun out of the game for me as I was on a PvP server. But there are some good adventures to be found in both games. I will let a WoW fan talk for WoW as I no longer play I dont feel its my place to talk about it in to much detail.
(If you dont have a good comp I dont recomend EQ2 tho hehe)
Nothing out atm like UO except maybe lineage2 and it was a huge grind i dont know if it still is. Upcoming games for you to keep your eyes on include Age of Conan, Darkfall , The Chronicles of Spellborn and the Chronicle
Tactica is "looking" a LOT like UO but I dont think the gameplay is the same.
If you disregard the difference in depth and content... L2 is about as close as your gonna get.

I agree theres not much out there thats as good as UO but I dont think L2 is what I would recomend lol. that game is a grind fest if Ive ever seen one. if you can make it past 20 I give you congrats I couldnt I just wanted to cry with the amount of grinding.
Age of Conan is looking good and its probably my next mmo.

DAOC is what you are looking for it has great great crafting.
The PvP is excellent it isnt way too quick to level and the game only begins once you hit the top level.......
98% of the teenage population does or has tried smoking pot. If you''re one of the 2% who hasn''t, copy & paste this in your signature.
dont u dare start playing MMORPG unless u want to be hooked
I'm curious, what about DAoC's crafting system did you like?
Fyi, I played DAoC for a long time, beta and then some. I found the system to be quite boring, granted running errends for the locals was fun, it was eventless, buying materials from NPC's and standing around making things. I did like the sheer amount of things to make, that was a big plus.
I like interaction, which is the very thing that drew me into UO and kept me away from other games. If I wanted to be a bowyer, all I had to do was pick up an axe, find a few tree's, and start chopping, with in seconds I had logs, which I turned into lumber, which then I had the choice to making into a variety of things. Same goes for mining, tailoring, etc... and a well thought out charactor could be 100% self sufficiant, never needing to buy anything from NPC's or other players, they could make thir own tools, repairs, and sell their wares for money.
No I don't think you will find anything that will top UO, EQ2 does a great job of matching it, and both are great in their own ways. Any other MMO (besides EQ2) out there can hardly even touch on the level of interactivity that UO has.
Yes DAOC is a good choice the only thing that turned me off was the camera controlls but past that It was a very fun game and mabey even more like UO then any other game. Also hear its got a great comunity.
I never got into the crafting so I cant say much to that end of DAOC.
Why of course I am hun.
Thanks for your replies everyone. I am glad I am not the only one still hoping for a UO like game. I do miss it, it's just so dated now. hmmm.
WoW doesn't sound what i'm looking for, don't want a 'quick' game. Will take a deeper look at the others mentioned on here though. If not i'll see what this year brings.
Thanks again.
Additional - Well i'm now split between giving DAOC or EQ2 a try or waiting for The Chronicle or one of the others coming out. Decisions decisions.
well EQ2 and DAOC both have free trials if you wanna give them a try, I know there big but cant hurt
Looking closer at DAOC i'm told you can't just craft in the game. It's craft AND something else, otherwise you cannot afford it. Does anyone know if you gain experience through crafting in DAOC or only through quests and PvE?
I know you gain crafting experience in EQ2 but not sure about DAOC.
Basically I just want to be a crafter. I miss that in MMO's.
I played DAoC for two years. Great game but the crafting system is terribly boring. You get no xp for crafting, just better crafting skills. You can only be a pure crafter if you have your guild fund your crafting. The process itself is nothing but endless clicking. Every other mmorpg I've played has better crafting.
I have never played UO but many people say that Irth Online is the closest thing to UO that they have ever seen. Irth Online certainly has more crafting options than any other game I know of. But it does suffer from a small player base and is still in development despite being "released".
Errr Lineage II like UO? Are you on crack? Lineage II is NOTHING like UO except that it has open PVP.

Erm...
Guys I hate to break this to you but if you're comparing CRAFTING then EQ2 has better crafting than both DAOC and WOW combined. It's one of the best crafting systems out there. Have you even played the games you're talking about?????
DAOC is nice and I love playing it but it's not much like UO at all.
About the only game I can think of that's like UO is Asheron's Call: Darktide Server.
And even that's a bit of a stretch but it's the closest.
IRTH could be the next UO IF they fix all it's issues.
Now, if you're just looking for a fun Fantasy MMORPG that will keep you entertained, not bore you, give you fun and rewarding PVP and PVE experience and a SOLID crafting system that allows you to make useful, needed and even in-demand items? Then DAOC is an excellent choice. Personally I think DAOC is the most well rounded MMORPG currently available. UO would be but even I can't get past the graphics of it anymore. We REALLY need someone to buy the rights to the Ultima name from EA and do UO2....
I keep begging but nobody over at Mythic seems to be interested... which is a shame... I really think Mythic could do UO2 justice.

Indeed, I have to agree with the popular opinion that nothing currently on the market can quite fill that void that so many of us old UOers have.
My girlfriend and I finally broke down and bought EQ2 a few weeks ago and are having a lot of fun with it, however it wouldn't be fair to reccomend it as I've only been playing for those few weeks. One big selling point for us: Crafting is super-cool, and will gleefully suck away many hours of your time, much like UO's crafting did.
DAOC is worth a shot too, though I couldn't really get into it. And they have a free trial going now, so it's definately worth checking out, for the price. Loved the varied class concepts, I think I had more fun making characters than actually playing the game.
