Shields-Up Open Beta 2.04
We are activity seeking new Beta Testers. We have been busy over the last three months, the game is faster, more stable and has a lot more features and content.
Shields-Up is a persistent space based game. You command a small ship in the SU Universe. You can upgrade your vessel, join Military Factions or become a Pirate or stay neutral.
Mine, manufacture and sell - or sell your items on the Player markets. Utilise your ship and upgrade your cargo hold and play the Commodities market moving items to where they are most needed for a Profit.
Form a Guild, fit implants, follow challenging NPC missions earning rank fame and fortune on your way. Even the odd medal might not be out of the question.
Space not for you ? Well you can always lay some foundations, hire some staff and start up a settlement. That way whilst your off exploring the Galaxy you're settlement is still growing and earning you that all important cash!.
Did i mention XP, IP, Skills and all the usual things... Well must have skipped my mind

Funny thing is....you can switch the word Shields-up for EVE Online and then you get the description for that game too.

And before Eve Online there was Trade Wars, and Trade Wars 2002, and Elite....
If your point is originallity you're horrifically off track, Alex.
"What is it I have against Microsoft, you ask? Well, you know how you feel when you wait for an MMO to come out and when it does you feel like you've paid to play it's beta test for another 6-9 months before anything even thinks of working the way it should? Being a network engineer you feel that way about anything Microsoft puts out."
Actually I don't think I am horrifically off track. EVE Online is the best game in the space genre. I just looked up those games, trade wars and elite and they look bad and old. EVE is kind of like an updated version with amazing graphics thats hard to find in any game out right now.
The OP said this game was a throwback to the old days when games were about content and depth. Im sorry but EVE is also about content and depth.
Shields up looks like its taking a step back, of course OP even said that. All I did was read the description then check out the screenshots. I wasn't impressed. Of course EVE isn't for everyone either, so im not going to assume Shields-up is too.

Hence why I said "if" your thinking about originallity. What I am saying is that it's all been done before. Eve has some twists on some LONG since established paradigms.
As for Elite and Tradewars look old, this is hard to answer without pointing out the fact that you obviously didn't read much about them. Elite best look old....it was out on the Amiga. As for Tradewars...it predates the internet. Obviously they look old. But Eve hasn't REALLY come up with anything NEW and EXCITING that hasn't been tried or established elsewhere.
But I wasn't pointing out to you which game was the best. Your statement sounded more like a comparison between the two for what they are, not what they offer. As for saying Eve is the "best" space game out there, I'd think you would be better off saying it is the most "popular" since "best" is a purely subjective term.

Yeah I thought briefly about putting popular instead of best but I figured it is popular for a reason. You are right though.
You are right again, I didn't read to much on those games.

I don't think Shields-up has either. Thats my point of my original post. Perhaps they don't have much money and maybe want to gain experience. In that case I wish them the best.

I tried this a little while ago, but I don't think I could get it to run. I actually had an idea of making a game like this a little while ago but it never got off the ground.
Is this game in actual Beta now? Or is it still in Pre-Alpha. Because when I downloaded it, it said beta but it was definitally Pre-Alpha.
I play http://tdzk.net a browser based text game based off Trade Wars and Space Merchant (wich was based on Trade Wars, don't get confused w/ Space Merchant REALMS)
A Work in Progress.

There you are 100% right. I think it's a "basement creation" as I call them. Basically a group of friends or a guild or whatnot making a game together. That's pretty much how Eve started so it's always interesting to watch.
...in the end though I would give my eye tooth for something "new" /cry

Just so we are clear - I love EVE, Im in my 40's and have played just about all the mahor and minor MMORG's out there. Even the ones that folded tent and have sadly left us now.
SU is not meant to be anything like them visually, and is designed as a 20 minute a day type game, not the life sucking time bending game that so many MMORGs have become these days.
SU will appeal to a small % of players and harks back to the older style games and makes no pretense at being at a grpahical 3D entity.
When I'm not programming or slaving over a Poser art product I'm to be found in EVE and AO these days.
Lastly yes - SU falls in the basement design bunch, built by myself and one other, with input from 100+ players and fellow forum members. We'er not building the next EVE nor do we aspire to do so.
